  • Remove flowers from pansies as they die off this will stop them setting to seed and encourage a bloom when it warms up.
  • Trim back winter heather’s so they don’t become leggy.
  • Cut back ornamental grass to a few centimeters off the ground.
  • If you have not pruned back wisteria now is the time to do it. Cut the summer side shoots back to 3 buds.
  • Prune fuchsias back two 2 buds.

Alpines

On your alpines the first of the flowers should start appearing now. If it has been frosty check round the plants that they are still firmly in. You can firm the soil round the plants with your fingers. Make sure they are weed free round the plants. You can also put gravel or stone chippings round the alpines to keep them weed free. Make sure your labels are still all in tact if not write new ones for the plants.

Bulbs

You can now bring indoors your bulbs for indoor flowering. If any bulbs have finished flowering they can be planted up outdoors. If the ground is wet or frosty keep them watered until the weather picks up to plant them outdoors.

Dahlias

Make sure you keep your eyes peeled on the tubers through February. If they look like they are shriveling up place them in cool water for the night, dry them off and place them in peat. If any parts of the tubers are looking like they are rotting cut these bits off and dust the cuts with flowers of sulphur.

Gladioli

If you have them in the greenhouse they will flower earlier. Place the corns in single layers in seed trays in at a temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius. Make sure the trays are placed in direct sunlight. Make sure that you discard any of the corns that are diseased.

Heathers

Check on your newly planted heather and make sure they fare firmly in the ground as the frost could lift them. You can do this by pushing the soil down with your fingers. You can still plant them this month if the ground is ok. If not wait until next month when the weather will be better.

Irises

Now is the best time to order Iris bulbs to plant in March. These are ideal flowers for cutting or filling any gaps in borders in the garden.

Lillie’s

If the weather is still decent lillies can still be planted in the garden. If you are purchasing from a store make sure you check the bulb over that you are purchasing, make sure its healthy, plump and avoid any that look dried up.

If your lilies are starting to pop through in the garden use cloches (these can be picked up cheap) to cover them and protect them from the frost.

Rhododendrons and Azaleas

Start preparing the ground ready to plant these next month. To prepare the ground. Deep dig and add manure or lime free compost. Leave it to settle for the next month before planting.

Roses

You can still plant them this month as long as the soil is dry and moist but not if its really wet or frost and snow. If the weather is bad you can leave in the packaging for up to one week. If it’s any longer remove from the packaging and heel them in.

Sweet Peas

If the weather is suitable find the area you are going to grow your sweet peas and fork over the area. Get the frame work ready for them to grow up as sweet peas grow like peas and need support. If the weather is decent at the end of February you can sow the seeds outside. Make sure you protect them from birds and mice eating the peas and shoots.
