🥕🟡 1. Ingredients

  • 1 large swede, peeled and cubed
  • 4–5 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 25–50g butter
  • Salt & pepper
  • Optional extras: honey, mustard, cream, nutmeg, white pepper, thyme

🥣🔥 2. The Perfect Swede-to-Carrot Ratio

For the best texture and flavour:

2 parts swede : 1 part carrot

This gives:

✔ the sweetness of carrots
✔ the creaminess of swede
✔ a balanced, vibrant mash

If you prefer it sweeter, increase the carrot amount.

🍲🕒 3. How to Cook the Swede & Carrots

You can boil or steam. Steaming keeps flavours stronger.

🥘 Boiling Method

  1. Place swede and carrots in a pan.
  2. Cover with cold, salted water.
  3. Boil for:
    • Swede: 30–40 minutes
    • Carrots: 15–20 minutes
  4. Test with a knife — both should be very soft.
  5. Drain well.

🌫️ Steaming Method (Best for Texture)

  1. Add swede to the steamer first – steam for 15 minutes.
  2. Add carrots and steam together for another 25–30 minutes.
  3. Remove once fully tender.

🧈🥄 4. How to Mash for Perfect Texture

Once drained, return veg to the warm pan to dry for 2 minutes.

Then:

  1. Add butter.
  2. Season with salt & pepper.
  3. Mash until smooth.
  4. Add optional flavourings if desired.

For extra-smooth mash, finish with a hand blender.

🍯🎄 5. Christmas Flavour Variations

Classic Christmas Mash

Butter, white pepper, pinch of nutmeg.

Honey-Glazed Mash

Add 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup.

Mustard & Butter Mash

A spoonful of Dijon or wholegrain mustard.

Herby Festive Mash

Add thyme, parsley, or chives.

Garlic & Cream Mash

Blend in roasted garlic and a splash of cream.

❄️⏱️ 6. Can You Make Swede & Carrot Mash Ahead of Time?

Yes — it reheats extremely well.

✔ 1–2 days ahead

Store in an airtight container.

✔ Reheat by:

  • microwaving with extra butter
  • warming in a pan
  • oven reheating at 180°C for 20–25 minutes

✔ Freeze for up to 3 months

Portion it first for easy reheating.

🍽️🎅 7. What to Serve It With at Christmas

Swede & carrot mash pairs beautifully with:

✔ roast turkey
✔ roast beef
✔ gammon
✔ stuffing
✔ gravy
✔ Yorkshire puddings
✔ parsnips & roast potatoes

It’s also perfect for Boxing Day bubble & squeak.
