When & Where to Plant Sweetcorn for Best Results
When & Where to Plant Sweetcorn for Best Results
Setting your sweetcorn up for success starts long before the first seeds go in the ground. Choosing the right moment—and the right spot—can mean the difference between a towering, productive patch and a disappointing crop.
When to Plant Sweetcorn
- Sow Indoors:
Start seeds 2–3 weeks before your last expected frost date if you want an early crop. - Sow Outdoors:
Direct sow once the risk of frost is over and soil temperature is at least 10°C (50°F)—sweetcorn hates cold, wet soil and will sulk (or rot) if planted too early. - Soil Warmth Test:
Place your hand on the soil. If it feels uncomfortably cold to your palm, wait a few more days before planting. - Succession Planting:
Sow a fresh block every 2–3 weeks until midsummer for a steady harvest.
Where to Plant Sweetcorn
- Full Sun is a Must:
Choose the sunniest, warmest location you have—sweetcorn thrives on at least 6–8 hours of direct light per day. - Shelter from Wind:
Tall sweetcorn is vulnerable to toppling in strong winds. Plant near a fence or use string supports. - Space:
Corn is a “heavy feeder” and needs both elbow room and rich soil. Don’t overcrowd; plant in blocks (not single rows) for good pollination and stability. - Soil Needs:
- Fertile, well-draining soil is crucial. Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay spots.
- If your soil is poor, plant on heaps of compost or improve your beds in advance.
Planting Sweetcorn for Pollination Success
- Blocks, Not Rows:
Plant seeds or seedlings in square blocks—this allows for better wind pollination (critical for developing full cobs). - Spacing:
Standard is 20–25cm (8–10 in) between plants, with about 40–50cm (16–20 in) between block rows.
Top Tips for Planting Success
- Pre-warm soil with cloches or black plastic if spring is slow.
- Avoid shade from trees or tall neighboring crops.
- Mix in compost or well-rotted manure before planting for best growth.
Special Situations
- Containers/Small Spaces:
Use large, deep containers and choose smaller or dwarf varieties like ‘Trinity’ or ‘Mini Pop.’ - Raised Beds:
Sweetcorn happily grows in raised beds with light, fluffy soil.
