The day focuses on love, service, sacrifice, and obedience, setting the scene for the events of Good Friday and Easter.

The Last Supper

On Maundy Thursday, Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples. This was a Passover meal and their final time together before his arrest.

During the meal, Jesus:

  • Shared bread and wine with his disciples
  • Spoke openly about his suffering and death
  • Predicted that one of them would betray him

This meal is remembered by Christians through Holy Communion.

The Institution of Holy Communion

At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine and gave them new meaning:

  • The bread symbolised his body
  • The wine symbolised his blood

He instructed his followers to continue this practice in remembrance of him. This moment established Holy Communion (the Eucharist), which is central to Christian worship today.

The Washing of the Disciples’ Feet

One of the most powerful events of Maundy Thursday was when Jesus washed his disciples’ feet.

This act was shocking at the time because foot-washing was a task usually done by servants. By doing this, Jesus showed:

  • Humility
  • Servant leadership
  • The importance of loving service

He told his disciples to follow his example.

The New Commandment

During the evening, Jesus gave a new commandment, which is the origin of the word Maundy:

“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

This commandment (mandatum in Latin) is central to the meaning of Maundy Thursday.

Judas’ Betrayal

Jesus revealed that Judas Iscariot would betray him. Judas later left the meal and agreed to hand Jesus over to the authorities in exchange for money.

This betrayal set the events of Good Friday into motion.

Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane

After the meal, Jesus went with his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray.

There, he:

  • Prayed in deep distress
  • Accepted what was about to happen
  • Asked God for strength

The disciples struggled to stay awake while Jesus prayed.

The Arrest of Jesus

Later that night, Judas returned with soldiers. Jesus was arrested in the garden, marking the end of Maundy Thursday and the beginning of the events that lead to his crucifixion on Good Friday.

Why Maundy Thursday Is Important

Maundy Thursday is important because it:

  • Establishes Holy Communion
  • Teaches humility and service
  • Introduces the commandment to love one another
  • Begins the most solemn part of Holy Week

It moves the focus from teaching to sacrifice.

Summary

On Maundy Thursday, Jesus shared the Last Supper, washed his disciples’ feet, gave a commandment to love one another, prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, and was arrested. These events form the foundation of Holy Communion and lead directly to Good Friday and Easter.
