What Are Swift Potatoes?
Swift is a first early potato variety with pale skins and white flesh. It is valued for its very fast growth and ability to produce a crop earlier than many other varieties. Swift potatoes have a light, fluffy texture when cooked and are best enjoyed fresh.
They are not suitable for long-term storage and are grown mainly for early summer harvests.
When to Plant Swift Potatoes
In the UK, Swift potatoes are usually planted:
- Late February to March, once the soil is workable and not waterlogged
In colder areas, planting can be delayed slightly. Chitting seed potatoes before planting is recommended to speed up emergence.
How to Grow Swift Potatoes
Soil Preparation
Swift potatoes grow best in fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting, dig in well-rotted compost or organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility.
Planting Depth and Spacing
- Plant seed potatoes 10–15 cm deep
- Space plants 30 cm apart
- Leave 60 cm between rows
Swift also grows very well in containers and grow bags.
Earthing Up
As shoots appear, mound soil around the stems to protect them from late frosts. Continue earthing up as plants grow to keep developing tubers covered.
Watering
Water regularly during dry spells, especially once plants start flowering. Avoid waterlogging, as early potatoes dislike wet soil.
Feeding
Swift potatoes do not need heavy feeding. A balanced fertiliser at planting time is usually sufficient.
Growing Swift Potatoes in Containers
Swift is an excellent choice for container growing:
- Use containers at least 40 cm deep
- Fill with free-draining compost
- Earth up with more compost as plants grow
- Water consistently, as containers dry out quickly
When to Harvest Swift Potatoes
Swift potatoes are usually ready to harvest:
- 8–10 weeks after planting
They can often be harvested earlier than other first early varieties.
Harvest when:
- Plants are flowering
- Tubers are small to medium-sized with thin skins
Swift potatoes are best eaten immediately after harvesting.
How to Harvest Swift Potatoes
- Gently loosen soil with a fork
- Lift carefully to avoid damaging delicate skins
- Harvest as needed rather than lifting the entire crop at once
Common Problems When Growing Swift Potatoes
- Frost damage to early shoots
- Slug damage in damp soil
- Dry soil reducing tuber size
Swift is usually harvested before blight becomes a serious problem.
Best Uses for Swift Potatoes
Swift potatoes are ideal for:
- Boiling
- Steaming
- New potatoes with butter and herbs
- Light salads
They are not suitable for mash, roasting, or long-term storage.
