Why Grow Paperwhites Indoors in December?
- Speedy blooms: Flowers appear in a month or less—plant in late November or early December for Christmas/New Year floral displays.
- Fragrance that fills a room: The scent of paperwhites is joyfully unmistakable in winter.
- No chilling needed: Unlike tulips or hyacinths, paperwhites don’t require a cold period—just plant and wait.
- Beautiful anywhere: Pots, bowls, vases—no soil required if you use the water method.
How to Plant Paperwhites Indoors in December
What You Need:
- Healthy, firm paperwhite (Narcissus tazetta) bulbs
- Shallow pots or bowls (no drainage needed if using pebbles/water)
- Peat-free compost or clean decorative stones/gravel/pebbles
- A bright, cool indoor spot
Planting in Pebbles/Water:
- Fill a bowl with 5–7cm (2–3″) of pebbles or gravel.
- Position bulbs close together (not touching) on top, pointed ends up.
- Add water so it just touches the bulb bases (not soaking the bulbs).
- Refill water to this level as needed.
Planting in Compost:
- Use a pot at least 10cm (4″) deep.
- Fill with compost, and nest the bulbs so half of each is above the surface.
- Water lightly and keep slightly moist.
Care and Growing Tips
- Place pots in a bright, cool (10–18°C or 50–65°F) spot—avoid direct heat, which causes floppy growth.
- Rotate pots every few days for straight stems.
- If stems stretch too tall, tie loosely with raffia, ribbon, or a twig framework.
- Avoid letting bulbs sit in stagnant water—change or top up as needed.
- No fertilizer needed for forced bulbs.
Aftercare
- Once flowers fade, bulbs forced in water rarely rebloom and can be composted.
- Bulbs forced in soil may be planted outside in mild climates, but may not flower again for a year or two.
Creative Ideas
- Plant several batches a week apart for ongoing blooms through winter.
- Cluster paperwhites in different-sized vases or mix with evergreens, pinecones, or holly for festive arrangements.
Enjoy the uplifting scent and elegant white blooms of paperwhites all December—they make a beautiful centerpiece, a thoughtful homemade gift, or simply a welcome burst of life as the year draws to a close.
