hey everybody and welcome to gardening
0:03
with Ben on this cold Sunday morning
0:06
well we're going to give you an
0:07
allotment talk show you what's growing
0:09
what's not growing and how well things
0:11
are getting on we do this on a weekly
0:13
basis so sit back relax and enjoy
0:16
today's episode everyone
0:18
[Music]
0:37
so we're down here on the allotment it's
0:39
absolutely freezing this morning but we
0:41
came down to make sure everything's okay
0:44
so yeah let's give you a weekly tour of
0:46
our allotment we do this all the way
0:48
throughout the year so that you can see
0:50
how things are progressing what we're
0:51
sewing and how things are growing so
0:54
yeah let's have a look around the
0:55
allotment everyone so as always we start
0:58
off at the front of the plot and look at
1:01
how well the hether is growing it's
1:02
absolutely gorgeous plenty of color in
1:05
these dull winter days but yeah it's all
1:09
starting to look good the bulbs are
1:11
popping through we've got signs of
1:13
spring life I can't wait for all the
1:15
spring color to come through we planted
1:17
so many bulbs in this front area this
1:19
year so hopefully we'll have some
1:21
gorgeous spring flowers we've got some
1:24
snow drops coming out look at
1:27
them fantastic
1:31
first bit of spring color is down here
1:34
on the
1:36
alotment but yeah so many bulbs so many
1:39
varieties as well so hopefully we'll get
1:41
spring color all the way through the
1:46
springtime absolutely
1:49
gorgeous but yeah fingers crossed will
1:52
get lots of spring color this year down
1:54
at the
1:58
plot as you can see it's it's all
2:00
looking pretty derel at the moment not
2:02
much life but yeah lots more bulbs
2:04
coming all the way around this front
2:06
area hopefully we've got lots of bulbs
2:08
in there as well to come out but yeah we
2:11
should have some nice spring color this
2:17
year all the bird houses have been
2:19
cleaned out ready for this year's Birds
2:22
if you've got bird houses take them down
2:25
clean them out make sure there's no
2:26
signs of life in it from previous
2:28
nestings as the birds won't move in if
2:32
there is a previous nest in there so
2:34
yeah get them cleaned out get them tided
2:36
and get them sorted for this year
2:39
hopefully we get some more blue sits
2:40
again this year we've had some the last
2:42
two years so yeah we definitely
2:45
encourage them we've got the bird
2:46
feeders up as well so that the birds can
2:49
know there's plenty of food
2:51
around we've got loads of bird feeders
2:54
up as it's the big bird weekend
2:57
encouraging the birds to the Garden
2:59
without the the birds you'll get lots of
3:01
insects so attracting the birds will
3:03
come and eat the insects and the Slugs
3:06
so yeah it's a win-win situation down
3:08
here at the AL we've got his lavender
3:11
hopefully it grows back this year we
3:13
might have to give it a little trim back
3:15
and get it fresh ready for this year but
3:17
yeah fingers crossed we'll get some
3:19
lavender more bulbs coming through in
3:22
between the lavender as well absolutely
3:26
gorgeous these are our rhubard beds
3:30
absolutely lots of rhar
3:33
plants obviously at this time of year
3:35
it's hibernating so not much life of
3:37
that it'll just keep dying off when the
3:39
cold weather comes but yeah that should
3:41
get started properly around Springtime
3:44
and hopefully a first harvest possibly
3:46
around May time we still got us ponds
3:49
clear out but we'll do that when it's a
3:50
bit warmer try and get some Froggies in
3:52
it this year because with Froggies
3:54
obviously they eat the Slugs as well so
3:57
that's one job on my list what I have to
3:59
get done
4:00
but we've got his fruit trees we've got
4:02
us pear we've got apple trees all
4:04
growing well we've got signs of buds
4:08
coming on them so yeah hopefully lots of
4:12
fruit this
4:14
year we got more bird feeders down this
4:18
side we got loads of bird feeders spring
4:21
bulbs in this
4:22
area growing hopefully lots more color
4:26
this was absolutely jam-packed full of
4:28
spring bulbs last year so hopefully the
4:30
same will come back this year fingers
4:32
crossed we will see somebody asked me
4:35
what I grew in my
4:36
green um pouches last year I tried
4:40
growing flowers but I forgot to water
4:41
them so they all died but we'll give
4:43
them a try this year and grow some more
4:45
flowers in them this year and see if we
4:47
can get some color down this
4:51
side that's a new bird house we've got
4:54
up this year see if we get any birds in
4:56
it fingers cross we do obviously we've
4:58
got as wildlife camera to keep an eye
5:00
and stuff we've got fat balls up we've
5:03
also got a bird station here as well
5:07
which we've got some Curren in for the
5:09
black birds and we've got different
5:11
varieties of bird seed as
5:14
well in a shed we've got as deriums what
5:17
we're trying to keep alive from last
5:19
year they are dying a bit because it's
5:20
been cold the last few weeks but
5:23
hopefully they might come back this year
5:25
we can also try and take some cuttings
5:28
off these side pieces and possibly plant
5:30
them and get more plants coming from
5:33
them so that's always an idea as
5:36
well we've got a sweet peas growing we
5:39
started these off in October keeping
5:42
them going throughout the winter period
5:43
and then we'll plant them out come
5:45
springtime we trimmed them all back to
5:47
make them Bush out more the flowers will
5:49
be smaller but we will get more flowers
5:51
on them and a bigger display so yeah
5:53
lots of sweet peas to
5:56
grow we've got some loopings as well the
5:59
cold weather are not doing them very
6:01
well like I said this in a heated
6:02
Greenhouse so we're trying we're trying
6:04
as best keeping them alive we got more
6:07
sweet peas growing but yeah this year
6:10
we're going to take off all the roof and
6:12
put a new roof on it and hopefully make
6:14
it waterproof as well this year down in
6:18
the shed make it
6:20
warmer we got spring bulbs growing
6:23
they're looking good hopefully lots of
6:25
color you can see all the Tulips are
6:27
coming through obviously a few weeds in
6:30
there but yeah I don't want to go
6:31
disturbing them much at this time of
6:33
year we've got this bulb lasagna which
6:36
is the first time I've tried doing that
6:37
planting bulbs at different layers to
6:40
add lots of color to a pot so let see if
6:43
we get some great displays from
6:45
that as you can see the squirrels
6:47
enjoying the nuts as
6:50
well but yeah it's destroyed that bird
6:53
feed look at
6:54
that oh well I don't mind seeing the
6:57
squirrels down here those as long as
6:59
they're not causing too much
7:04
damage we got this
7:06
Loganberry which is growing really well
7:08
last year so hopefully we'll get a lot
7:10
of Logan BS on it this
7:15
year these are our plum trees that we
7:17
planted a couple of years ago we've not
7:18
had any produce on them yet hopefully
7:20
this year we might get some on them
7:22
they're pretty strong now and getting
7:24
pretty big so hopefully we'll get some
7:27
plums on them we've got his blue
7:30
we need to clear them out and put some
7:32
fresh arous compost in them freshen them
7:35
up ready for this year we've got aliums
7:37
all the way down this side
7:39
growing so plenty of color
7:43
there we've got
7:45
strawberries I've got a radio growing
7:48
that'll be no good now we've got a
7:50
strawberries growing lots of strawberry
7:52
plants in this area I planted about 200
7:56
last year so hopefully lots of
7:58
strawberries we've got this formless
8:00
Blackberry down the side all tied up
8:03
ready for lots of blackberries this year
8:05
we got absolutely loads last year
8:07
amazing having a formless black bra as
8:10
you don't get prickled to death when
8:11
you're picking them
8:12
all we've got us climbing roses either
8:15
side of this fencing we've got an
8:18
archway on the way so plan is to get an
8:20
archway up and get it growing over the
8:22
archway and lots of color
8:31
down here we've got us garlic
8:34
growing we've got to take up that
8:36
Archway and replace it and sort it out
8:38
that's blown over in the wind we've got
8:41
garlic grind here as well back ones
8:43
don't seem to be doing as well but the
8:45
front ones look like they're doing
8:47
really well so plenty of garlic to
8:49
harvest this year if it all grows to
8:53
plan we got some utum onions growing
8:56
they're not doing too well uh I don't
8:58
know why
9:00
but they're in you never know we might
9:02
get some onions from them we are
9:04
starting some off in March time so we
9:07
shall always see we can always take them
9:09
out and replace them with something else
9:12
if they don't grow but you have wins you
9:14
have losses and sometimes things don't
9:17
go to
9:19
plan so that has been a tour of my
9:22
alotment I hope you've enjoyed it like I
9:24
said we do these every single week when
9:26
we remember and yeah continue to see how
9:29
well things are growing throughout the
9:31
year down here at the alotment and see
9:33
what we're sewing and what's growing and
9:36
what's not growing so until next time
9:38
everyone remember keep smiling keep
9:40
shining and keep gardening with B
9:42
