0:17
just starting out this podcast is for
0:20

0:23
tricks and techniques to make your
0:25
garden and alotment thve from planting
0:28
sewing and growing we will share all the
0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brew and enjoy today's
0:44
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben for another brand new
0:51
episode it's the last episode of the
0:53
Year
0:55
woohoo and then tomorrow we start a new
0:58
year and you will get new podcast from
1:01
next year so yeah we'll be back in 2025
1:04
with another podcast and we'll probably
1:07
update our intro and Spruce it up a
1:09
little bit and yeah get ready for the
1:12
new year and for new podcasts and thank
1:15
you everybody for all those that do
1:17
listen to these podcasts I really do
1:19
appreciate it and keep on sharing them
1:22
and let's get more people listening to
1:24
them so this podcast is talking all
1:27
about the success and the fail failures
1:30
of 2024 of the allotment so yeah we have
1:35
had a lot of success and a lot of
1:37
failures as I always talk about my
1:40
failures because I'd rather people know
1:42
that I'm an honest Gardener and know
1:45
that I
1:46
do have trouble with growing certain
1:49
things and yeah having produce a fail on
1:53
me so what have we succeeded in this
1:57
year and what have we failed in we'll
1:59
start at the front of my alotment and
2:01
work my way around so then I know
2:02
exactly what I've done uh it's easier to
2:05
remember that way so at the front of my
2:09
alotment I've got my plum tree and that
2:11
did fantastic to start off with it got
2:13
plenty of leaves on it it got plenty of
2:15
buds on it but then it died off like
2:18
halfway through the year all the leaves
2:20
just dropped off and everything so I
2:22
don't know what happened to that whether
2:23
it got Silver Leaf I don't know so
2:26
fingers crossed it comes back to life
2:29
next year and hopefully it picks up if
2:32
not we might have to end up getting rid
2:33
of it if it doesn't do very well but
2:36
yeah fingers cross Will Keep Us plum
2:37
tree cuz that's my Victoria plum tree
2:39
and they're absolutely delicious plums
2:42
on them so hopefully we get some good
2:45
produce next year from it as rhubarb as
2:48
rhubarb did absolutely fantastic this
2:51
year wow amazing because we didn't get
2:54
much sunshine this year but we got a lot
2:55
of rain and yeah it is absolutely
2:58
fantastic I got loads and loads of rubab
3:00
crumbles this year for my mom as I grow
3:04
the rubab and she cooks all the crumbles
3:05
for me I think we've got a perfect
3:08
combination there don't you I grow it
3:10
all they make the rub Bob
3:12
crumbles but yeah absolutely
3:16
amazing so what else did well uh let's
3:20
go on to our apple trees I was cooking
3:23
apple tree that didn't do too well
3:25
either as i' pruned it a lot the year
3:27
before which can stress the tree out and
3:30
yet not produce as many cooking apples
3:32
we only got a handful of them as eating
3:35
apples did absolutely amazing we got
3:37
loads of eating apples this year they
3:39
did
3:41
fantastic I've not pruned my cooking
3:43
apple tree or my eating apple trees this
3:45
year as they're a decent size decent
3:48
shape and yeah hopefully we'll get some
3:51
good produce on them next
3:55
year so yeah hopefully we get some
3:58
decent produce from them peirs did
4:00
amazing as well they did absolutely
4:03
fantastic so next up are our strawberry
4:06
plants our strawberry plants did rubbish
4:09
we hardly got any strawberries this year
4:12
rubbish outcome so I planted 200
4:14
strawberry plants this year ready for
4:17
new plants next year these were all cut
4:19
taken from Runners from the original
4:21
plants and from my neighbors plot so I
4:24
planted 200 strawberry plants so I
4:26
should get some strawberries next year
4:28
fingers crossed they've all s to of
4:30
Taken they're all growing pretty well
4:33
and yeah hopefully we'll get a decent
4:35
crop of them next
4:37
year our tomatoes and his
4:40
cucumbers absolutely amazing my tomatoes
4:43
I grew grew them all Outdoors because
4:45
that's where I grow them now because I
4:47
can't always get down in the week so
4:49
I've pled them outside because then if
4:50
it rains then at least they get in
4:52
watered our cucumbers I started some off
4:55
in the polyon because that's where I've
4:57
always grown them and that yes they got
5:00
quite a few of them but then I had a
5:01
load of spare plants and I thought
5:03
rather than waste money buying compost
5:05
and everything I'll plant them straight
5:07
outside so I plan to be in the ground
5:09
not thinking that they'll do anything
5:11
because I've never grown cucumbers
5:13
outside before this is the market more
5:15
variety and wow they did absolutely
5:19
fantastic they did 10 times the amount
5:21
of ones that in the poly tunnel so I'm
5:24
going to continue growing cucumbers
5:26
outside from now on with how well the
5:28
produce did this year absolutely
5:32
amazing next up is our beetroot our
5:35
beetroot did amazing it first time I've
5:38
ever cooked it in an air fryer usually I
5:39
just give it to my mom to pickle me but
5:42
I thought I'll try it in an air fryer
5:43
and wow they were delicious I cooked
5:45
them like chips and they tasted
5:48
absolutely
5:49
beautiful then we had a sweet corn a
5:52
sweet corn again amazing that did
5:54
fantastic so I might grow even more
5:56
sweet corn next year because I
5:58
absolutely adore sweet Recon so I might
6:00
just go absolutely loads of it and again
6:03
I cook that in the air fryer as well and
6:05
it Cooks
6:06
fantastic next up is H lettuce as
6:11
lettuce did amazing we always grew
6:13
iceberg lettuce absolutely beautiful and
6:16
delicious we grew some pumpkins we got a
6:19
couple of good siiz pumpkins they did
6:22
well we did
6:26
our peas our peas were absolutely
6:29
amazing
6:30
wow as peas usually I just SE them
6:32
straight into the ground and they do
6:34
well but the last couple of times I've
6:35
had issues where rats have had more the
6:37
M have them all the squirrels so I
6:39
thought I'm going to start offing a seed
6:41
tray first grow them to a decent size
6:43
and then plant them out and wow this is
6:46
the best crop that I've ever had this
6:48
year I had two croppings I started some
6:51
off early and then I did another batch
6:54
and both Lots did absolutely amazing so
6:57
I'm going to do the same method again
6:59
growing peas next year absolutely
7:03
fantastic as ketts didn't do anything
7:06
they were absolutely rubbish this year
7:09
so we'll try again with them next year
7:12
um but yeah we didn't grow a lot of
7:15
stuff this year oh it's potatoes it's
7:17
potatoes we grew them in boxes and they
7:20
did amazing uh I don't grow potatoes in
7:23
the ground anymore grow all in boxers so
7:26
that you can just tip them out once
7:27
they've finished and rather than
7:30
stabbing them when you're trying to dig
7:31
them up or cutting them in half by
7:34
accident and they don't get as much ring
7:37
worm in them or diseased they did
7:40
absolutely amazing so I'm going to grow
7:42
all my potatoes in boxes again next year
7:44
yes it cost a lot of money for all the
7:45
compost to fill them up but it's the
7:48
best produce that I've had so I'm doing
7:50
that again next
7:53
year but yeah as vegetable wise
7:56
absolutely brilliant we got loads of
7:58
black Brees off our phess black
8:01
brief it did amazing and it shot out
8:05
loads more uh Vines this year so
8:08
hopefully we'll get a little more
8:09
blackberries on it next year we've tied
8:11
it all up and sorted it all out as
8:13
raspberries again amazing the Autumn
8:15
ones seem to do better than the summer
8:17
variety so
8:20
I love raspberries CU they expensive to
8:23
buy it as well so hopefully we get loads
8:26
more raspberries next year but yeah I
8:29
think that that's about it for all the
8:31
veg and the fruit this year we didn't do
8:33
fantastic like I said it weren't a
8:35
brilliant year uh we didn't get much
8:37
sunshine this year and we had quite a
8:41
bit of rain and cold days but hopefully
8:44
fingers crossed we have a good year next
8:46
year the flowers absolutely amazing this
8:50
year we grew sunflowers they did
8:53
fantastic we've got some massive ones of
8:55
those uh sweet peas absolutely stunning
8:59
so stunning that I've sewn a load
9:02
already I saw them all in October
9:05
September October time as they can make
9:08
them stronger growing them early and
9:10
growing them through the winter so
9:12
they're all in my shed at the moment we
9:13
snipped them all back to 6 Ines so that
9:16
we can get them to Bush out they won't
9:18
get big flowers on them but they'll get
9:20
a lot more flowers on them if you get me
9:22
uh so hopefully we get loads of sweet
9:24
peas next year Salvia we grew Salvia for
9:27
the first time that was from BBC Garden
9:30
as well the plants that I got it were
9:32
black current one one of them and it
9:34
smelled absolutely gorgeous like black
9:35
currant so we took a load of cuttings
9:37
off that about 20 and they're all
9:39
growing they've all taken so they're all
9:42
growing in my Greenhouse now so we're
9:44
going to be planting them Outdoors next
9:46
year fuches we got fuches the spring
9:50
bulbs were absolutely phenomenal this
9:52
year so hopefully they're good this year
9:55
we've not hopefully the squirrels
9:56
haven't pitched them all and hopefully
9:58
they all grw
10:00
uh we've had a Le more spring flowers
10:02
this year so hopefully we get another
10:04
good display out of our allotment this
10:07
year so yeah tomorrow's episode
10:10
obviously we'll be talking about
10:11
everything that we want to try this year
10:13
all the new things that we're going to
10:15
look forward to trying and all the old
10:17
things and how we plan on having a
10:21

10:51
