0:48
gardening with Ben well it's Wednesday
0:51
already happy hump day everybody it
0:54
doesn't feel like Wednesday at all
0:56
because I'm recording this on
0:58
Monday but no happy Wednesday everybody
1:01
hopefully we got some snow that's what
1:04
I'm hoping for as I'm recording this on
1:06
Monday uh the forecast is due for snow
1:09
in a couple of hours time just at 7:00
1:12
so I'm recording this at Monday at 5: so
1:15
ready for your Wednesday episode but
1:17
hopefully we manage to get some snow
1:19
fingers crossed and I do love some snow
1:22
but I'm glad I managed to get all my
1:23
geraniums in on time and all my bulbs in
1:28
and my garlics in so this cold weather
1:30
will help obviously all the garlic all
1:33
the spring bulbs and stuff like that
1:35
it'll say now come on time to wake up
1:37
time to do your magic and get
1:40
working so hopefully we have had
1:44
some snow so yes let's get back to
1:48
pretending that it's Wednesday happy
1:49
Wednesday
1:51
everybody I do make myself laugh I hope
1:54
I make you laugh as well but yeah
1:56
welcome back to today's episode I hope
1:58
that you're all having a a fantastic
2:00
week I'm certainly looking forward to
2:02
the weekend as it's my mom's birthday
2:04
and having a party so hopefully I'll be
2:07
out and be able to have a fun time on
2:09
Saturday night have a few drinks and
2:11
enjoy my family
2:14
time so today's topic what we are
2:17
talking about is how can you choose the
2:21
best seats for
2:25
2025 that is today's
2:28
question well
2:30
it's always hard to try different
2:33
varieties and know which ones are the
2:35
best varieties to try as there's loads
2:38
of different varieties of vegetables
2:40
when you go to the Garden Center or go
2:43
to a DIY store they'll just have the
2:46
standard varieties which everybody knows
2:48
and loves they won't have ones that you
2:51
can experiment with and try new ones
2:54
with and sometimes it is good to
2:57
experiment and try with different
2:59
different varieties to see how well they
3:01
actually grow and sometimes it's the
3:03
weird and wonderful varieties that do
3:05
better than the normal varieties and one
3:10
of the ways that we can learn to try
3:12
different varieties is by either having
3:16
a look on a seed website where you can
3:19
buy seeds from obviously Amazon you can
3:22
buy different varieties from there and
3:25
another way which I used to do is I used
3:29
to get
3:29
[Music]
3:31
the gardening magazines I used to get
3:34
grow your own magazine and the kitchen
3:36
Garden Magazine and I don't know if this
3:38
still do but I've not uh purchased them
3:40
for a bit but you used to get 10 free
3:43
packets of seeds with each magazine and
3:46
the best thing about that is that you
3:47
get stuff what you probably wouldn't
3:49
usually try and if you if you're like me
3:52
and you've got seeds in a bag you'll
3:56
think oh I might as well give that a try
3:58
see what happens with it see if it grows
4:01
there's no loss with trying it
4:04
out and that's what I did with my purple
4:09
purple C cauliflower let me split my
4:12
words out purple cauliflower like if i'
4:15
have gone into a sou uh into a garden
4:17
center I wouldn't have tried the purple
4:19
variety of cauliflower and I find that
4:22
one a lot easier to grow than the white
4:24
cauliflower so you do learn different
4:28
things on
4:30
of different
4:32
varieties and it's good to experiment
4:35
every year when I'm growing my produce
4:37
on my alotment I think of what am I
4:40
going to try this year something
4:42
different as I always like to try
4:45
something new
4:47
and one of the years I decided I'm going
4:51
to grow all different varieties of
4:53
squash as there's lots of different
4:55
varieties out there there's obviously
4:57
pumpkins different varieties of butut
5:00
squash there's all different varieties
5:03
out there so I went online and just
5:06
searched for the different varieties out
5:08
there to give them a try and yes it
5:12
obviously cost money to buy seeds and
5:13
stuff like that but you don't know how
5:16
good the varieties are until you give
5:18
them a try and see what they actually
5:20
grow like even if you don't eat them or
5:23
if it's just for fun it's always good to
5:26
just try little new things out there and
5:29
I did this with growing squash I've done
5:33
it with
5:35
growing beans I've done it with growing
5:39
tomatoes I've never done different
5:41
cucumbers for I might have to try that
5:43
one yet I've never grown Telegraph
5:45
cucumbers I've always stuck to the
5:47
market Mo varieties out there because
5:50
Market Mo are
5:52
good good Cropper so I might actually
5:56
try Telegraph cucumbers one year and see
5:58
how well the they actually grow and
6:00
whether they grow any different if it's
6:03
easier to grow like I say you don't know
6:06
different varieties until you try them
6:08
so looking out for the best varieties
6:11
for
6:12
2025 is I'd say just experiment and have
6:16
a look around and just see what
6:18
different things you want to give a try
6:20
the best way sometimes to look for
6:22
different varieties to try and grow is
6:25
often by ordering a seed magazine as
6:28
obviously you can see what the like on
6:30
there and sometimes seed magazines are a
6:32
lot easier to navigate than websites as
6:35
sometimes you look on websites and
6:36
they're all over the place hard to
6:38
navigate hard to find what you're
6:40
looking for so seed magazines are often
6:43
pretty useful and yeah I've got to say
6:48
if you're trying a new variety next year
6:51
let me know what you want to try and let
6:54
me know how you get on I'm definitely
6:56
going to experiment and try some
6:58
different things out next year and just
7:02
see how see how it all grows to be
7:04
honest and see if we get a good
7:08
outcome I don't really know what type of
7:11
thing to try next year whether it be
7:14
different varieties of carrots different
7:16
varieties of beetroot as there's more
7:19
beetroot out there than you can imagine
7:21
there's even multicolored beetroot as
7:23
well as multicolored Cavs but yeah we're
7:27
going to give it a good try next year
7:29
and hopefully get some amazing results
7:33
so all I can give you the tips and
7:36
advice for finding the best varieties
7:39
for
7:40
2025 is have a look around experiment
7:45
try new things out and ask other
7:48
allotments as well like try and grow one
7:52
variety and swap it with one of your
7:54
neighbors on your allotment like share
7:56
them with a few varieties and they might
7:59
swap you some back as well that's a good
8:01
way of trying new things out so I hope
8:04
you found this useful go out there and
8:06
experiment try different varieties of
8:09
things that you would never see in the
8:10
supermarket or in the shop and let me
8:13
know how you get on so until next time
