moment and we are so busy especially
0:56
down at the allotment and with
0:59
everything in what I'm doing at the
1:01
moment we're busy getting all the seeds
1:05
ready what's growing in the greenhouse
1:07
ready to be planted out as I've got
1:09
loads more to be planted out we're ready
1:11
to harvest that garlic from my allotment
1:14
as well that's about ready and we're
1:16
going to start harvesting our lettuce as
1:18
well which is coming on really well
1:21
they're getting the heads inside them
1:23
now and they're looking absolutely
1:26
delicious and over the next few days
1:29
we're going to be be recording more and
1:31
more podcasts and also more and more
1:35
videos so if you've not checked out my
1:37
YouTube channel go and check them out
1:39
and give it a follow and a subscribe as
1:42
I'm posting so many videos at the moment
1:44
I'm trying to push out my YouTube
1:46
channel so keep following that for lots
1:49
of videos with tips and handy hints on
1:52
there what I'm sharing with you all from
1:53
the allotment and today's topic what
1:57
we're going to talk about is about grow
1:59
gr sunflowers growing large sunflowers
2:04
now sunflowers are a phenomenal flower
2:07
and if you've never tried growing a
2:09
sunflower before you should really give
2:12
it a chance now you've still got time to
2:14
plant some sunflower seeds if you want
2:16
to give it a try
2:18
so go out get some seeds and give them a
2:21
try you can get them from Amazon you can
2:23
get them from the range where I get mine
2:25
from and yeah plenty of places sell
2:28
sunflower seeds and and they're so easy
2:30
to grow well you just have to be careful
2:33
at the beginning because slugs can come
2:35
along and nibble them up and you'll end
2:37
up losing them but if you plant them out
2:39
once they're big enough and tall enough
2:42
then you've got more chance of
2:43
protecting them from the slugs from
2:46
eating
2:47
them so how do we grow nice tall
2:50
sunflowers now one variety which does
2:54
grow absolutely massive is a Russian
2:56
sunflower these grow absolutely huge you
2:59
can get get a sunflower up to 30 foot if
3:02
you're lucky and the best thing about
3:04
sunflowers is that if you grow plenty of
3:06
them you can use the stock as canes the
3:10
next year because they dry out rock hard
3:12
and they're perfect for canes and
3:14
supports and stuff like that so it saves
3:16
money on buying canes so just grow lots
3:19
of sunflowers this year and you'll have
3:20
loads of canes for your running beans
3:22
and supports next year it's one thing
3:25
that I use I use all the canes to
3:28
absolutely Rock Solid
3:30
cannot break them most of the time
3:32
they're that hard um but yeah they make
3:35
great supports and great canes for the
3:38
allotment so how do you grow big tall
3:41
sunflowers or and what are the tips for
3:44
growing decent sunflowers well I've grew
3:47
mine in my greenhouse and then I potted
3:49
them on grew them to a decent size and
3:53
then I planted them out yes I did use a
3:56
few slug pallets around them because I
3:57
wanted to protect them I wanted them to
3:59
be safe and get growing but I don't need
4:01
the slug pallets now they're at a decent
4:03
size and they should survive well but
4:07
once they start getting quite tall you
4:09
need to start supporting them by putting
4:12
the cane in there as that will get it
4:15
growing straight and it will support it
4:18
from snapping which you do not want once
4:21
You' start it but obviously when you
4:23
fastening it up to a cane what you need
4:25
to make sure is that you don't tie it
4:28
too tight you need to leave
4:30
a bit of movement in it because the
4:33
thickness of the stock on the sunflower
4:35
will get really thick as it gets bigger
4:38
and obviously you don't want the wire
4:41
what you're uh tiing it to the came with
4:44
to cut through the stem and damage it so
4:47
you need to make sure that you do leave
4:50
some movement in it and if you're
4:52
watering them on a regular basis like on
4:55
a daily basis you could
4:58
be fening it up every few days because
5:02
once sunflowers start growing they start
5:04
growing fast and are mean really fast
5:07
and every time I go to the alotment I
5:09
will give them some water because they
5:11
are thirsty drinkers they are really
5:13
thirsty drinkers so yeah make sure you
5:17
give them plenty of water when it comes
5:19
to feeding the
5:21
sunflowers I tend to put some chicken
5:23
pellets around the bottom which will
5:25
feed the sunflowers for two to 3 months
5:30
so I'll go around again in a couple of
5:32
months time and sprinkle some more
5:35
chicken pellets around it and they will
5:38
break down over the few months and feed
5:40
the plant and obviously they're good for
5:43
when you watering them for when it rains
5:46
it will keep feeding the plant which is
5:49
something that you want to
5:50
do I also use Liquid feed as well once a
5:55
week I'll just give some food to them
5:58
and hope that they'll drink it and it
6:00
will help them boost them and grow them
6:03
and I've done a YouTube video on this it
6:05
should be appearing in the next couple
6:06
of days if it's not already up there
6:09
already uh on what feed I use for my
6:13
sunflowers so make sure you do check
6:15
that out but obviously once you get to a
6:18
decent size you can have little
6:20
competitions with the family and friends
6:22
to see who can grow the toly sunflower
6:24
on the allotment or in the garden and
6:26
have a little competition between one
6:28
another like I've won 's grown one
6:30
really tall and I mean so tall it will
6:33
like at home it will fasten up to the
6:35
drain pipe it will that tall and I want
6:38
a sunflower competition for growing the
6:39
tallest one so it is pretty good fun and
6:42
then obviously once it's come to the end
6:45
of the year when the head's dying off
6:47
you can either save the seeds to grow
6:50
again next year you can leave hang the
6:53
seed heads up for the birds to eat
6:55
because the birds will love to eat the
6:57
sunflower seeds or you can actually
7:00
roast them I've never tried roasted
7:01
sunflower seeds so if you have tried
7:04
roasting sunflower seeds please do let
7:06
me know and share with me if you
7:08
actually like them or not because I do
7:11
like to find out these things so yeah
7:14
that is how you grow massive sunflowers
7:18
and regular water like once every day or
7:22
once every two days give it some water
7:25
to drink and it will grow massive
7:27
especially when it's flouring make sure
7:29
you keep water in it and give it some
7:32
liquid feed once a week to two times a
7:35
week and put some chicken pellets down
7:38
around it as well to give it that extra
7:40
kick and keep feeding it so I hope
