0:40

0:44
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:47
gardening with Ben in today's episode
0:51
we're going to talk about everything
0:53
that we have got up to down at our
0:55
allotment over the weekend giving you an
0:57
insight into what we've been doing
1:00
well if you don't follow me on YouTube
1:02
you would have not seen that I've done
1:05
absolutely loads this weekend so make
1:08
sure you go across and follow my YouTube
1:10
channel and you can see it all in live
1:12
action what I've been getting up to plus
1:14
I've shared a weekly tour of my plot so
1:17
that you can see what's growing and
1:18
what's not growing well this weekend has
1:22
been absolutely busy busy busy busy down
1:26
there at the allotment this weekend and
1:28
it's been actually a decent weekend it
1:31
was that fine rain what does really wet
1:34
you but we managed to get lots done
1:38
anyway down there which I'm impressed
1:40
with again like I always say is that I
1:42
write a list of the jobs that I want to
1:44
do while I'm at the allotment and I take
1:46
them off as I get them done so I never
1:48
give myself too much to do I just give
1:51
myself enough to be able to complete the
1:54
tasks so this weekend was about
1:58
finishing off all my vment beds getting
2:00
them all dug over as I wanted to get
2:03
that out of the way so that I can
2:05
concentrate on doing the tougher
2:08
areas and getting them done but my main
2:11
part of my plot was the main bit that I
2:13
wanted to get finished because obviously
2:16
that's where I grow all my fruit and veg
2:18
throughout the year and once I've done
2:20
that then at least I know that's
2:22
completed yes the weeds will grow back
2:25
yes the roots will grow back and all the
2:27
bind weed will grow back through the
2:28
soil but it's all du over now and if we
2:30
get any frosts it'll break down the soil
2:34
it'll break down any Wheat water in
2:36
there and it'll help get the soil ready
2:39
for next year and we can just keep hoing
2:42
it every weekend now to keep it Weed
2:45
Free fingers crossed that's the plan
2:48
anyway come back Springtime and you'll
2:50
see it all like a jungle
2:52
again but yeah we've got it all weeded
2:55
now and dug over so the next main plan
2:59
will be to get all my paths sorted as
3:02
that's the next important job of my
3:04
allotment and then it'll be a case of
3:06
repairing all my beds getting them all
3:08
painted and looking fresh ready for next
3:11
year but I obviously I can't paint them
3:14
until it's dryer weather because it'll
3:16
just wash off again so there's no point
3:18
painting them through winter I'll paint
3:20
them again in springtime to make them
3:21
look fresh for the year ahead that's the
3:24
plan anyway but we've got all that to
3:27
do then we've also been busy clearing
3:30
out all the bind weed what's been
3:32
growing along all my fence now the
3:35
reason why they call it bindweed cuz it
3:38
is an absolute bind if you've ever dug
3:40
up bind weed it just comes out like
3:43
spaghetti and if you pull a long piece
3:46
out it makes you all day if it snaps
3:49
you're like no because you've got to
3:51
find the piece what it's connected to
3:53
when you digging up band weed you have
3:55
to get out every single bit of rout or
3:57
it will grow back and it can go back
4:00
even worse so the more you get out the
4:04
better chance of getting on top of the
4:05
bind weed I never get on top of it I
4:07
know that for sure because if you got
4:10
membrane down for paths it grows all
4:12
underneath the membrane and everything
4:14
like that it grows under all the pairing
4:16
Stones so you can't get it out unless
4:19
you absolutely rip all your allotment
4:21
part and start from scratch and dig
4:24
every bit of soil over which it take
4:27
forever uh but as long as it's not not
4:29
getting into my beds digging them over
4:31
and clearing them every year I'm keeping
4:33
on top of it that's the
4:36
plan so we've got that to do what else
4:39
have we done we've been um also we've
4:43
been obviously feeding Mr pussycat if
4:46
you're not aware we do have a pussycat
4:48
living on my alotment which is good it's
4:51
absolutely brilliant it had kittens the
4:52
other week but the kittens must have
4:54
wandered off now or Fox must have got
4:56
them or something like that because I've
4:58
not seen them around for a bit but the
5:00
mother cat is still around which is
5:02
really good and we're feeding her on a
5:04
daily basis as well so that she's got
5:06
enough food and energy to keep it going
5:09
but obviously having a cat around on the
5:11
allotment it gets all the rats and all
5:13
the mice which is brilliant it keeps on
5:15
top of them which is what we want it it
5:17
won't catch the squirrels unfortunately
5:19
they're too fast for the cat but um the
5:22
rats haven't been an issue at all
5:25
whatsoever this year I've not seen any
5:26
signs of rats on my allotment which is
5:29
Absol abolutely perfect and it's so nice
5:32
because as soon as I drive onto the
5:33
alotment it must be able to hear what my
5:35
car sounds like and it's sat waiting at
5:38
my gate and then it runs through and
5:40
then it waits for me on my strawberry
5:42
patch while I go into my shed give it
5:44
some food and then it will sneak in and
5:47
eat it
5:48
all and yeah we've been doing that a lot
5:50
of people have said that obviously um I
5:53
need to get it Ned or whatever but it's
5:55
a wild cat it's just out in the area
5:58
it's not my respons responsibility and
6:01
it's seems happy enough with how it's
6:04
living and yeah it's keeping the r
6:07
population down on the allotment which
6:09
is fantastic so I'm happy with how all
6:12
that's
6:13
going but then obviously I'm looking
6:16
after my Birds now we're getting lots of
6:17
birds down there I mentioned uh in one
6:20
of my Facebook posts a bit back that I
6:23
seen a sparrow hawk down near the
6:26
alotment it literally dived bombed me as
6:29
walking on and I thought I've not seen
6:33
no birds around for ages usually even
6:35
see see at least Robins around like
6:38
following you every time you're digging
6:39
around but there'd be no Robbins around
6:42
whatsoever and I started to worry but
6:45
thankfully this weekend I've started to
6:47
see the birds coming back to the
6:49
allotment site which is fantastic I've
6:50
seen some I think they call them col it
6:53
they like black and white but uh I've
6:56
seen a few of them I've seen a few
6:58
Robins around seen some black birds
7:00
around which is good because obviously
7:03
Spar Hawks are birds of prey and if
7:06
they've eaten on an alotment or in a
7:08
garden you don't see the birds around
7:10
for quite a bit until they cuz they do
7:13
know they do know that there's a
7:15
predator around and they'll stay
7:18
away so thankfully I've started seeing
7:20
the birds around again the bird feeders
7:22
are
7:23
getting all eaten as soon as I'm putting
7:26
them out and yes Mr squirrel is is
7:30
loving the bird feeders he's going up
7:32
and down them all and eating all the
7:34
nuts and everything on them but on my
7:36
new one what I purchased what I shared
7:38
online recently uh the one on the pole I
7:42
purchased like a plastic case what goes
7:45
over it to stop the squel and rats
7:47
crawling up the pole to get to the bird
7:50
feed so thankfully the birds alone to
7:54
get that one which is good and yeah I
7:59
think I think that's all what we've been
8:00
up to really it doesn't sound like a lot
8:03
but it is a lot if you get me cuz it's
8:06
kept me busy and I'm getting down there
8:08
at like 9:00 in the morning and I'm not
8:10
leaving till 1:00 yeah I could stay a
8:13
few more hours but it's starting to turn
8:15
cold now starting to turn nippy so we
8:19
have to come home and warm up again but
8:22
I'm only getting two days down there at
8:24
the moment now that I'm back working
8:25
normal hours and yeah I'm absolutely
8:29
loving it and I'm ticking off all them
8:32
jobs and fingers crossed by I'm giving
8:37
myself until the end of November I want
8:40
my
8:41
allotment completely cleared all all the
8:44
weeds cleared all the path's done all
8:48
the borders clear that's what I'm giving
8:50
myself till end of November and then in
8:53
December I'm going to concentrate on
8:56
giving my shed a real spruce up I want
8:59
to paint all inside it I want to put new
9:02
shelving up I want to put new flooring
9:05
down I want it all to make really nice
9:08
because I'm going to be filming lots
9:09
more content inside of my shed and
9:12
sharing tips and advice and I'd love to
9:14
have a little shed just sit in and do
9:16
some films and do some potting up and
9:19
stuff like that so I'm going to Spruce
9:21
the whole of my inside of my shed last
9:24
year I was busy with rebuilding my shed
9:28
because it all collapsed but this year I
9:31
want to concentrate on the inside of it
9:33
and sprucing it all up and making it
9:35
look nice and yeah I know you don't need
9:38
to spend money on a shed but I don't
9:40
have a garden and this is where I get my
9:42
enjoyment out of mostly so I'm going to
9:44
end up spending a bit of money on inside
9:47
making it all look nice and fancy for
9:50
next year and hopefully growing lots and
9:53
lots of spring flowers and vegetables in
9:56
it next year so we'll have to stay tuned
9:58
for that so that's what I've been up to
10:01
down at the allotment this weekend
10:02
another busy
10:04
weekend but yeah this podcast will be
10:07
back again tomorrow with a new episode
10:09
at 7:00 we might be talking about garlic
10:12
and onions so stay tuned for that and
10:15
