1:43

1:46
today today we're going to talk
1:48
about gardening motivation now I talked
1:52
about this in one of my YouTube videos
1:54
what's going to be coming out as well
1:55
soon but I thought I'd talk about it on
1:58
my podcast
2:00
as
2:02
obviously a lot of you know that I have
2:04
struggled with my mental health in the
2:07
past
2:09
and I went to the doctor and they tried
2:12
to prescribe me tablets and stuff like
2:14
that but at that time I was talking to
2:17
my martial arts coach and he was saying
2:20
no don't do the tablets do exercise
2:22
instead uh which I found very helpful
2:25
and it helped a lot
2:27
and obviously I going to Arts back then
2:31
but I used my garden as a place of
2:34
escape a place of where I can relax
2:38
where I can switch off where I can turn
2:40
off and yeah that's why I spend the
2:45
whole weekend down there really and
2:48
that's why I enjoy putting all
2:50
these videos out for you to watch all
2:53
these podcasts out to listen to because
2:56
I know a lot of people get a lot of
2:57
stuff from it and the comments that
2:59
people send me a really nice genuine
3:02
comments I don't get no hatred
3:04
whatsoever and everybody is always
3:07
supportive of what I do and it's a
3:11
fantastic community that I've got I
3:13
absolutely love it and yeah if you are
3:16
listening to this podcast or watching
3:18
one of my videos just leave a comment
3:20
and it really does help with everything
3:23
what I do and it motivates me as well
3:26
and that is how obviously you need to
3:29
keep your motivation when you're doing
3:31
your gardening it's hard to have
3:34
motivation sometimes to go to the
3:35
alotment to go in your garden especially
3:39
if it's an awful day out there or
3:42
something's gone wrong at the alotment
3:44
like everything's gotten eaten or you've
3:48
had a breaking at the allotment or
3:50
something that's put you off from going
3:53
it's hard to find that motivation to go
3:55
back and I never used to find that
3:58
motivation during the winter
4:01
months uh once my harvests had finished
4:05
end of September beginning of October I
4:07
used to say right that's it I'm not
4:09
going back to the allotment now till
4:11
January February time I've spent all
4:13
year there and it's been a hard work but
4:16
that's it I'm not going to be starting
4:18
again until January February time and
4:20
sometimes it's hard to get started again
4:22
once you've not been doing
4:25
it and that is one of the reasons why I
4:28
decided that a few years ago I would
4:32
continue through the winter going to my
4:34
alotment I don't grow necessarily
4:36
through the winter obviously you know
4:38
that I do grow garlic I grow winter
4:41
onions broad
4:43
beans but yeah I don't grow much through
4:46
the winter period I could grow loads of
4:48
stuff in my polyon in the ground if I
4:50
wanted to but I don't want to grow stuff
4:53
through the winter it's not what I want
4:55
to do and what I want to do down at the
4:58
alotment is all my main maintenance work
5:00
and tidying and prepping ready for next
5:03
year as that's what excites me over the
5:05
winter period obviously I've spent all
5:07
year doing all the growing and
5:09
everything like that I want to switch
5:11
off from that and I like to prep and do
5:14
handy work do some building even though
5:16
I'm absolutely rubbish at building you
5:18
all know I'm rubbish at building I put a
5:20
shelf up and it'll fall down in a few
5:22
weeks
5:24
time but yeah I absolutely love it uh I
5:27
love DIY but I'm rubbish it never hire
5:29
me to build a shed cuz it'll fall down
5:32
trust me I can't even put a fence up
5:34
without that falling
5:36
down but yeah I love winter time down at
5:40
the alotment now is
5:42
absolutely fantastic and I'm eager to go
5:45
down all the time and I'm always eager
5:48
to go down when it rains as well when
5:50
it's absolutely chuing it down I'll
5:51
still be at the allotment trust me and
5:54
if I'm not you need to be messaging me
5:56
saying Ben why aren you at the alotment
5:58
taking pictures and doing post and stuff
6:00
like that but yeah I'll always go down
6:02
at the winter now and one thing
6:05
obviously that I do when I go to the
6:06
alotment is I make a list of jobs that I
6:09
need to do obviously you'll find jobs
6:11
while you're there to do but I write
6:13
down a few jobs which I need to do for
6:15
that weekend and obviously during the
6:18
winter months it's about getting it all
6:20
perfect ready for next year which is a
6:23
big task in itself but the quicker I get
6:25
it done and the quicker then I can relax
6:28
over winter if only but yeah uh I write
6:33
all the jobs down I don't give myself
6:34
too many jobs each weekend just a few
6:36
jobs so that I know that I can complete
6:38
them and I take them off as I've got
6:42
them done and like I talked about next
6:45
weekend is I'm going to be sorting out
6:48
my fruit trees cutting all the brambles
6:51
back on that and sorting that area out
6:53
that's next week's task which I know
6:55
last just for the weekend I could
6:58
probably do it in a day if I want to do
7:00
but I'll make it last the weekend I
7:02
don't put too much pressure on myself
7:04
and I'll take them off once I've done
7:06
them and then obviously during the
7:08
winter
7:09
month is when I do all my improvements
7:11
in my shed uh I wash all my pots down I
7:15
tidy it all up I sweep up all the mess
7:17
what I've made I pick up all the rubbish
7:19
what I've left because like I said I'm
7:21
not a messy I'm not a clean and tidy
7:23
Gardener if I if I were a clean and tidy
7:26
Gardener I would have no jobs to do it
7:28
winter
7:30
but yeah uh I definitely won't be going
7:33
into the allotment if I were clean and
7:34
tidy Gardener um but yeah we love to
7:39
keep ourselves motivated throughout the
7:41
winter period and that's why another
7:43
thing what I enjoy doing is doing these
7:46
blogs and videos for you because doing
7:49
the videos and the photos and everything
7:51
like that and talking about it I can see
7:54
the improvement from the plot week on
7:56
week obviously you can as well so you're
7:58
following my journey
8:00
but you can see that I've progressed
8:03
every week and I'm doing a little bit
8:05
more and it's looking a little bit
8:06
better and one of the things what I
8:09
might do next year if you all want to
8:12
join in I don't know if you want to join
8:13
in or not I'm going to stand in the same
8:16
spot every single week and take a photo
8:19
and just show it what it looks like
8:21
every week for 52 weeks and just see the
8:25
progression throughout the year and
8:27
through to the winter which I I think
8:29
could be make what would make quite a
8:31
good video really you know when like
8:33
merge into one another and you can just
8:36
see the change that would be a good
8:39
little video to do not that I know how
8:41
to make it it's hard enough making the
8:43
videos as it
8:45
is but yeah that is one other way that I
8:49
keep myself motivated obviously doing
8:51
all these
8:52
photos and I've got to say as well all
8:55
you guys and girls that are listening to
8:57
this you all motivate me into keeping
9:00
gardening and keeping going throughout
9:02
the year um it's good to share with one
9:04
another how well we're all doing and
9:07
getting involved on the garden and what
9:10
we've been up to down at the Garden and
9:11
that's why I love it when people do
9:13
comment on my posts on Facebook and
9:15
Instagram saying what they've been up to
9:17
what they've done at the alotment I know
9:19
I may not reply to them all but I do
9:21
read them if I reply to all the comments
9:23
that would be a day in a job in
9:26
itself but yeah I do read all the
9:29
comments and it's fantastic to see what
9:31
other people are doing down in the
9:33
gardens and the allotment and it's about
9:35
encouraging one another and the next
9:38
time you go out to see a friend or go
9:41
out for a coffee or something like that
9:43
just chat to someone about your garden
9:45
about what you've been doing in your
9:47
garden or allotment or tell them what
9:49
produce or flowers have grown really
9:51
well and what you'd like to do next year
9:55
down at the allotment and it it
9:59
encourages you as well talking about it
10:01
to other people it gives you that warm
10:04
sense of feeling and encouragement into
10:06
doing
10:07
more so if you are lacking motivation
10:10
for your garden and allotment do get in
10:13
touch with mate I'm always here to chat
10:15
I'll always reply to people's messages
10:18
uh you can message me through Instagram
10:20
I'm available to message through
10:22
Instagram just search for gardening with
10:23
Ben uh give me a follow and you should
10:26
be able to message me hopefully uh you
10:28
should be able to message me it's always
10:30
good to hear from people and I'd love to
10:34
hear about what you've been getting up
10:35
to in your allotment tips and advice as
10:38
we're always learning and that's another
10:41
thing is that if somebody says oh I did
10:44
this and it really successful like
10:46
that'll go give you that little bit of
10:48
boost and you'll think oh I'm going to
10:50
give that a try next year a bit like
10:51
what my neighbor did with his carrots on
10:53
his a lopment he a first year Gardener
10:55
and he grew some fantastic cars and I've
10:58
been trying for 16 years don't let it
11:00
dishearten you let it encourage you into
11:03
doing more and more good things down at
11:05
the plot I never get disheartened if
11:08
something fails and it does absolutely
11:10
rubbish I'm just like H fair enough I'll
11:13
try it again next year but yeah don't
11:15
let anything put you off in gardening uh
11:18
use it as a encouragement into trying
11:22
again and doing it keep doing it until
11:25
you get something out of it and I hope
11:28
you found this useful today uh tomorrow
11:32
we're going to talk about uh another
11:34
topic so make sure you come back for
11:36
tomorrow's episode I'm loving doing
11:38

11:42
