0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:30
It's Finally Friday your weekend is
0:33
finally here unfortunately not for me as
0:37
I'm on nights but I've got three more to
0:40
do and then I will be back down on the
0:42
allotment for 4 days so I can't complain
0:45
that that really spending four days down
0:47
at the
0:48
allotment
0:50
so if you have not clicked that
0:53
subscribe button make sure you click
0:54
that subscribe button to get notified of
0:57
when we upload as new podcasts and you
1:00
can be the first to listen to it so
1:03
today we have been talking
1:05
about making gardening lists and that's
1:09
on my other podcast Channel called
1:12
gardening and allotment tips if you've
1:13
not checked out that one there's over 30
1:16
episodes on there for you to listen to
1:18
the link is in the description for that
1:20
podcast so we've been talking about why
1:24
it's important to create those gardening
1:26
lists and why we should be doing it to
1:29
be honest
1:30
uh so as it's the weekend we need to
1:34
start looking at what we need to be
1:38
getting done on our
1:39
allotment and in the last two episodes
1:43
I've talked about all the seeds what can
1:47
be sewn in February so you can be
1:50
listening to that making a note of all
1:52
the seeds what can be started off in our
1:55
allotments and Green Houses in February
1:58
but make sure you you have the warmth to
2:01
germinate them because some seeds will
2:04
really need the warmth to get them to
2:07
germinate and without the warmth they
2:09
won't even try growing so it's pointless
2:12
sewing them without the warmth so have a
2:15
look at your packets and make sure you
2:17
check what temperatures they need to be
2:19
germinated at and then the other episode
2:22
we were talking about all the jobs which
2:25
need doing on the allotment this weekend
2:28
so well this month in
2:30
February so it's a good idea to have a
2:32
listen to them episodes and start
2:35
creating your list of all the jobs that
2:38
need doing this weekend now as I'm
2:40
recording this we've been getting
2:43
absolutely hailed here in Sheffield
2:45
there's lots of hail been coming down so
2:48
I'm quite happy that I am actually
2:50
working to be honest because I hate it
2:52
when it rains and I'm off work because I
2:56
can't get all the jobs done that I need
2:58
to get done I'd rather it rain while I'm
3:00
working and then I'm not wasting any
3:03
days if you get
3:04
me so one of the things that I always do
3:08
is if it's not raining I'll be working
3:11
outside on my allotment but if it's
3:13
raining I will still go to the allotment
3:16
and I will do all the jobs which need
3:19
doing in the shed and the poly tunnel
3:22
and to be honest every time when I've
3:24
been to the alotment it's been decent
3:27
weather it's not been raining so the
3:30
still a lot of work that I need to get
3:31
done in my poly tunnel and in my shed
3:34
ready for the summer months and if you
3:37
know already I didn't use my poly tonel
3:39
last year because I didn't have time to
3:42
go down and water uh tomatoes and
3:44
cucumbers and stuff like that so I
3:46
didn't bother growing anything in my
3:47
polyol last year so it became a bit of a
3:50
Dumping Ground and I've not shown any
3:52
pictures of what it looks like in my
3:54
poly tunnel at the moment but it's an
3:56
absolute mess and there's weeds growing
3:58
everywhere
4:00
oh it it all all just needs everything
4:03
just taking out of the poly tunnel and
4:05
cleaning down and restarting so that is
4:08
on my gardening list of jobs to
4:11
do but that will wait until it is a
4:14
rainy day because I don't want to waste
4:17
decent days of being outside all the
4:19
jobs I do inside are for rainy days and
4:23
that's the thing about having a
4:25
allotment is that you can
4:30
have an allotment shed so that you can
4:32
keep doing all these jobs that need
4:34
doing so that is one thing that is good
4:37
to have at the allotment side if you're
4:39
definitely new to getting an allotment
4:41
uh or you haven't got one I would advise
4:44
in getting a greenhouse or shed because
4:48
then it's work that you can continue to
4:50
do while you are spending time at the
4:52
allotment and stuff like that because if
4:55
it's raining and you haven't got a shed
4:57
or a greenhouse or polyon
5:00
you won't be able to go down to the plot
5:01
because you don't want to be outside
5:03
working in the rain I know I certainly
5:06
wouldn't want to go through the lopment
5:08
and get absolutely
5:09
soaked so have a look around and
5:13
possibly build yourself one I got an
5:17
Greenhouse when I first got my
5:20
allotment
5:21
and it was a good greenhouse but it just
5:26
wasn't big enough uh I am 6'5
5:30
and I struggled to get inside the
5:33
greenhouse so I ended up building my own
5:38
shed greenhouse and it's absolutely
5:42
massive um I dug down so that it was
5:47
deeper um but it looks does look tall on
5:51
the outside but it is deep on the inside
5:54
so there's like a couple of steps down
5:55
into it um so I I made it massive
6:00
and obviously I built it myself and I
6:04
built it out of
6:05
perspect uh
6:08
plastic and wooden frames so it wasn't
6:12
expensive to build it cost built it cost
6:15
me about 300 to build it to be honest
6:18
and that's probably what you pay for a
6:20
greenhouse and it's
6:24
probably 10 times bigger than a
6:26
greenhouse in turtle and if you're
6:28
building something yourself then you can
6:32
design it how you want it to be and
6:35
there's so many freebies that you can
6:37
get online you only have to look on the
6:40
Facebook Marketplace and you will find
6:43
wood Timber uh even plastic sheeting so
6:46
you could if you really worked on it you
6:49
could really build your own uh for free
6:53
and I'm no good at DIY I always say this
6:55
in my podcast I'm absolutely rubbish at
6:58
DIY but um it's good fun to have a go
7:02
building something uh you may have to
7:05
keep modifying and making uh upgrades to
7:08
make it last through the storms or
7:10
through the winter weather but mine's
7:12
been up years now and it's still
7:14
standing strong um it's only had a
7:18
couple of plastic sheets blow off but
7:20
they bound to after a few years uh
7:22
disintegrating and stuff like that so
7:25
have a go at making something yourself
7:27
so yeah this weekend it's all about
7:31
writing down all the jobs which need
7:33
doing on your allotment so if it is
7:36
raining and horrible and stuff like that
7:38
still have jobs that need doing in your
7:40
shed and in your Greenhouse a good thing
7:43
to do at this time of year is obviously
7:46
clean all your green houses down clean
7:49
all your sheds down disinfect them all
7:51
spray them all that gets rid of any
7:54
diseases what may be harboring and lying
7:57
around dormant until the warm weather
8:00
comes back again and it makes it all
8:02
fresh as well and obviously you can
8:05
clean all your plant pots and stuff like
8:07
that I know that's a job that nobody
8:09
wants to do uh I certainly don't want to
8:11
do it but it's it's it's on the list of
8:13
jobs that need do it uh trust me uh but
8:17
yeah um there is lots of jobs that need
8:20
doing in the shed in the greenhouse and
8:22
you can make improvements to your
8:23
shelving I'm always trying to find Space
8:26
to add new shelves in and stuff like
8:28
that because you never have enough room
8:30
in your greenhouse and shed trust me uh
8:33
the more shelves that you put up the
8:35
more you'll end up
8:37
growing I struggle every year to find
8:39
shelvin to put stuff on in my Greenhouse
8:42
uh I certainly do and it's funny really
8:46
because uh when you see these people
8:49
just try and cram everything into the
8:51
greenhouse as possible and that is me
8:53
trust me uh come springtime when I'm
8:56
doing my live Facebook tours around my
8:58
Greenhouse and shed you will see how
9:01
cramp packed it is and obviously this
9:04
year I'm going full storm ahead with
9:07
growing flowers on my allotment and I've
9:10
literally got 50 packets of flower seeds
9:12
so I need to find 50 trays to grow them
9:15
in it's all right buying all these
9:17
packets to grow the in but you need to
9:20
find uh stuff to grow uh grow the actual
9:22
seeds in uh which is the hardest bit so
9:25
we'll have to see how we do get on with
9:27
that so I'm look am looking forward to
9:30
Springtime this year uh I'm going to be
9:32
spending some long time days down there
9:36
and from the other day it has started
9:39
getting lighter early I don't know if
9:40
you've noticed that uh it started
9:43
getting lighter earli in the morning so
9:45
I can go to the allotment a bit earlier
9:47
every every day now and hopefully spend
9:50
longer that I don't like to spend I like
9:53
to be home by like 1:00ish usually
9:56
because we've got like a shared cop out
9:57
so it's a first come first for parking
10:00
your cars in uh so I like to be home at
10:02
about 1:00 half 1 so that I get parking
10:05
space because people coming back from
10:07
work and stuff like that so but as the
10:09
days get lighter I will be going down to
10:11
the plot as early as possible um in some
10:15
in the height of Summer I've been known
10:17
to go to the allotment for like 6 half 6
10:20
in the morning because it's the best
10:22
time of the morning to go down in uh
10:25
especially in summer when you're really
10:27
watering hard and you need need to get
10:29
it done before the hot sun comes out so
10:32
I do love being down at the alotment at
10:35
that time in the morning in the
10:37
summer so I hope that you have a
