0:23
tricks and techniques to make your

0:28

0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the Alum so sit back
0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben for today's episode
0:51
it's a bit later than usual but the
0:53
episode is here and we have been
0:57
enjoying the sunshine wow today has been
1:01
phenomenal it said it were like 20
1:04
degrees but I'm sure it must have been a
1:06
lot lot warmer than that it's absolutely
1:09
roasting today and I feel like I've
1:12
caught some sun today and I think this
1:14
is the first proper day of summer that
1:17
we've had even though yesterday was the
1:19
actual first day of summer the longest
1:22
day so yeah it's been absolutely
1:25
gorgeous down at the alotment today and
1:28
we are busy we are busy at the allotment
1:32
and what have we been up to well let's
1:36
find out what we've been up to we have
1:38
been harvesting our garlic and I didn't
1:40
actually know this till yesterday is
1:43
that you actually are meant to
1:46
pick your garlic on the longest day of
1:50
summer because by for for Gardener's law
1:54
you meant to plant it on the shortest
1:55
day and then it'll be ready on the
1:57
longest day so I never actually knew
1:59
that when I picked it yesterday so I've
2:02
learned something new myself there and
2:05
so we've harvested it all we've hung it
2:07
up in our poly tunnel so it can dry out
2:10
and let all the soil fall off it what's
2:13
uh currently around it so I'll keep
2:15
shaking those every day so let the soil
2:17
fall off it and yeah we'll be making
2:20
some meals with it so if you've got any
2:22
suggestions for a single person living
2:25
on their own what to make with garlic
2:27
let me know and I will try and make
2:30
something from it we've also planted uh
2:34
where we' pulled the Paul as garlic
2:36
we've planted a load more sweet corn
2:38
plants now I started these off in my
2:42
shed a couple of weeks ago not that long
2:44
ago to be honest uh they probably should
2:46
have been a bit bigger but I wanted to
2:48
get them out in the ground get them
2:50
rooted and get them growing so we
2:52
planted possibly around 20 more sweet
2:56
corn plants so hopefully we're going to
2:59
have a lot more sweet corn growing so I
3:01
need to make sure I keep those watered
3:03
over the next few days and get them
3:05
growing in this so because they'll dry
3:07
out and they'll die if not so we need to
3:09
make sure that we do keep his eyes
3:11
firmly peeled on them and get them
3:12
growing
3:14
well we've also planted some more sweet
3:16
corn plants where my other sweet corn is
3:20
currently as there were a few gaps where
3:22
ones hadn't taken they died off or yeah
3:26
or they just not taken at all so I
3:28
planted a few more around there so
3:29
hopefully fingers crossed this year
3:31
we're going to have a lot of sweet corn
3:33
and sweet corn I absolutely adore it's
3:36
delicious so
3:38
nice I can't fault having sweet corn
3:42
grown from home you have to pick it when
3:45
it's ready don't pick it all at once
3:48
because it loses its flavor as soon as
3:51
you pick it so pick the amount that you
3:54
want take it home and cook it and eat it
3:57
that night so I'll only like pick a
3:59
couple of days
4:00
and just keep keep eating them every day
4:02
every time you've been to the allotment
4:04
so it loses its flavor and that's a
4:06
well-known fact that so only pick what
4:10
you actually require don't store it
4:12
because it'll lose its flavor as soon as
4:15
you pick
4:16
it so we've done that and what else have
4:19
we planted we planted a lar pece today
4:22
absolutely hundreds uh I had two trays
4:25
full of peas grow well I had three
4:27
actually my dad asked me for a tray so I
4:29
couldn't really take turn him down cuz
4:30
he's being watering him but yeah we've
4:33
planted two more trayf Falls of peas
4:35
today and when I say trayf Falls there
4:38
like a 100 plants in each one so we've
4:41
planted absolutely loads we've got some
4:44
peas currently growing at the moment
4:46
they are doing really well they're about
4:48
getting ready they just need to start
4:51
swelling up now and start getting bigger
4:52
the peas so we planted a little more pce
4:55
so that we get a second crop later on in
4:58
the year uh obviously when the peas are
5:01
ready they're usually all ready at the
5:02
same time so hopefully we'll get some
5:05
decent peas and if you like me the peas
5:08
won't even make it home you'll end up
5:09
eating them down at the allotment raw
5:12
that's what I always do they're so juicy
5:14
and tender they absolutely phenomenal so
5:17
we've done that what else have we done
5:19
we planted some cucumber remember me
5:22
telling you that I'd planted like 50
5:25
plants 50 seeds and they've literally
5:27
all grown well quite a few have got
5:29
nibbled away so we've lost a few but
5:32
we've planted them all and this is the
5:34
first year that I'm planting some
5:37
cucumbers outside I thought rather than
5:40
waste money on lots and lots of compost
5:43
and spend a fortune I'll plant them
5:46
outside and give it a try as obviously
5:49
it's turning warm now you never know how
5:51
well the summer might be it might be
5:53
nice and obviously if it rains it Waters
5:56
them for me uh but obviously the more at
5:58
risk of being attacked
6:01
by mice rats pigeons and stuff like that
6:05
so we're going to have to keep an eye on
6:06
them and keep them protected until they
6:08
get quite
6:09
tall but we'll see how they get on and
6:12
hopefully Mr squel doesn't like cucumber
6:14
so we'll have to keep an eye on them so
6:16
I planted them all outside today I've
6:18
given them a good water a good
6:20
drink because like I say is 22ยฐ today
6:25
and I think it's only going to get
6:26
warmer so we need to keep an eye on them
6:28
over the next few days
6:30
and keep them watered and well hydrated
6:33
cuz as you know cucumbers they are full
6:36
of water so they do like a good drink so
6:40
we'll keep it on on them we'll see how
6:41
they go even if we get about 10 plants
6:43
growing outside I'll be happy with that
6:45
uh but I have planted all the plants
6:48
what we're growing in the tray so you
6:50
never know we might be inundated with
6:52
cucumbers you'll have to wait and see
6:54
for the pictures for them oh my Logan
6:57
berries are starting to ripen they're
6:58
starting to look nice they starting to
7:00
look tasty and I'm looking forward to
7:03
having some nice fruit to go with my
7:06
Greek yogurt water I'm on as you have
7:09
probably seen on Instagram I've gone
7:11
back to the gym I'm trying to get my
7:13
fitness back in order I weighed myself
7:16
for the first time the other day wow
7:18
I've clapped some weight
7:20
on and the camera had1 pound so it worse
7:23
on
7:25
camera that's why I'm doing a podcast
7:28
but yeah um I've got myself back to the
7:31
gym like I'm always talking about I
7:33
struggle with my mental health my
7:35
anxiety and even after the first session
7:38
of going to the gym I absolutely felt
7:41
tons better in myself I felt fresh this
7:44
morning I must be working hard there
7:47
because I ate like mad but I'm still
7:50
happy that I went and I accomplished it
7:52
and that I went to the gym and got
7:54
myself there and yeah I'm going to be
7:57
keeping track of my progress uh I'll
8:00
keep sharing posts and stuff with you
8:02
how I'm getting on and you never know I
8:05
may have a sixpack for World Naked
8:07
gardening Day next year you never
8:10
know we'll see we'll see about that but
8:14
yeah I'm hoping to put a lot of effort
8:16
into it and I've also purchased one of
8:19
those eyew watches as well an Apple
8:22
Watch so we've got the little circles on
8:25
it I don't know if those have got an
8:27
Apple Watch I'm not that up on it yet
8:29
not worked out how to use it so we need
8:31
to work out how to use it and hopefully
8:35
start cracking on it and start working
8:39
on getting my fitness back to how it was
8:43
that's the plan anyway you might think
8:45
that being in allotment all the time is
8:48
keeps you fit yes I probably would be a
8:50
lot way a lot more than I actually do
8:53
but I do a job where
8:56
it's 12 hour shifts sat at a desk
9:00
so I don't get much activity apart from
9:02
when I'm at the Alman so hopefully this
9:04
will kick me back into action and get me
9:07
started on becoming a fit of myself and
9:10
get better in the uh how I am so stay
9:13
tuned for that so hopefully we're going
9:15
to be back down at the allotment
9:17
tomorrow we have got it's Saturday
9:20
tomorrow so I'm back at work on Sunday
9:22
so we need to get plenty done tomorrow
9:24
we're going to have to give it a really
9:26
good soaking if it is going to be a hot
9:28
few days we need to give it a good
9:29
soaking I may even have to go down one
9:31
night but we'll see I don't tend to like
9:33
going down to alotment at night on my
9:35
own I know it's uh daylight and I'm like
9:38
38 years old I just don't like going
9:41
down there at night you never know who's
9:43
around so tomorrow we might be planting
9:47
some
9:49
beetroots some climbing beans we maybe
9:53
harvesting some
9:55
lettuce but yeah hopefully we're going
9:57
to get a lot done tomorrow
9:59
and as you know I'm posting lots more
10:03
videos on YouTube now I posted a tour of
10:07
my allotment so if you've not checked
10:08
out that video go and check it out it's
10:10
a tour of my allotment it's an
10:11
up-to-date one so you can see how well
10:14
things are growing and how badly things
10:15
are growing I'm an open honest Gardener
10:18
and I share everything that I've been
10:20
doing so if you want to look around my
10:22
plot go and have a look on my YouTube
10:23
channel called gardening with Ben
10:30
so I hope you've enjoyed today's episode
10:32
I hope you've got a lot out of it and
10:35
yeah hopefully we'll get some more
10:37
episodes recorded tomorrow for the next
10:39
few days the tomorrow's episode won't be
10:42
on until the afternoon time as I've not
10:44
pre-recorded any for the time being so
10:47
yeah I hope you all have a fantastic
10:49
weekend make the most of this Sunshine
10:51
don't forget to put the suntime cream on
10:54
make sure you water all your plants
10:56
early in the morning or late at night
10:59
but it's better early in the morning
11:01
because the Slugs aren't around in the
11:03
daytime they only come out at night time
11:06
mainly so make sure you water them early
11:08
in the morning get up 6:00 give it a
11:11
water go back to sleep and then get on
