hey everybody and welcome to Gardening
0:03
with Ben well it's the 1st of May and
0:06
it's the hottest day of the year so far
0:10
28° it's got up to in certain areas of
0:14
the UK wow what a scorcher it has been
0:18
and I hope that you found my watering
0:20
tips useful in the last video where I
0:23
was saying it's best to water early in
0:26
the morning before the sun comes up and
0:28
in the morning is the best time because
0:31
the slugs aren't awake in the morning so
0:34
it's best to water in the morning rather
0:36
than the evening because that's when the
0:37
slugs come out so what are we doing this
0:40
month well this month will be a month of
0:43
concentrating planting all our plants
0:46
out in the garden but I'm going to be
0:48
waiting till the middle of May
0:51
as we still have frost up till the
0:54
middle of May yes it has been a heat
0:57
wave this week it's been boiling but the
1:00
temperatures could drop next week so I'm
1:03
being careful because I'm up north we
1:04
can still get frost up till the middle
1:06
of May so I'm going to be waiting and
1:08
holding fire my corettes are ready my
1:10
pumpkins are ready my squashes are ready
1:12
things are ready for going out but we're
1:14
waiting i don't want to end up planting
1:16
them out and killing them off by frost
1:19
so yeah we'll be getting that done and
1:21
we'll also be planting some more seeds
1:23
because I want to start a succession of
1:25
growing that means that you can start
1:28
things off at different intervals so
1:29
that you get a continuous crop
1:31
throughout the summer period i've got
1:33
some peas in the ground already but I'll
1:35
be starting some more off because once
1:37
they're harvested I'll want to replace
1:39
them to get some more peas later on in
1:41
the season the same goes for things like
1:43
lettuce beetroot spring
1:47
onions plenty of plants that you can do
1:50
that with so if you want a succession of
1:52
growing that is what you need to do keep
1:54
planting them at different intervals so
1:56
that you get a successful harvest all
1:58
throughout the summer period and
2:00
hopefully up to about October time i
2:03
don't tend to grow stuff through the
2:04
winter i use the winter period as a time
2:06
for doing any maintenance work doing any
2:09
repairs doing any fixing up and tidying
2:12
it all up because I've had a busy year
2:15
and I like to get it all ready for the
2:17
year after and then I've have a head
2:19
start ready for planting and starting
2:21
growing again in the March time so that
2:23
is what I do when I'm planting out so
2:27
yeah it's going to be a busy month i'm
2:29
excited um ready for this warmer weather
2:33
but yeah it's been a gorgeous week down
2:35
here and all the aliiums have started
2:37
popping out now i'll be starting to
2:40
share lots of photos of those on my
2:41
Instagram so if you're not following the
2:43
Instagram do give it a follow because
2:45
I'll be sharing lots of photos on there
2:47
as you know I've probably been sharing
2:48
lots of photos of tulips at the moment
2:51
as I do love my tulips they're
2:53
absolutely gorgeous and I like to go for
2:55
all the weird and wonderful looking ones
2:57
i don't like just the plain ones so
2:59
we've got all that to do and all the
3:02
fruit is starting to come along the
3:04
strawberries are getting ready they're
3:05
starting to flower up they're getting
3:06
bigger so now that they're starting to
3:08
flower up I'll start feeding them with
3:10
either tomato feed uh or seaweed feed
3:15
feed like that to get them growing
3:17
better and getting some nice juicy
3:19
fruits on them and I'll probably look at
3:21
netting them over this year cuz the
3:23
birds got quite a lot last year and I
3:25
didn't get many strawberries which I'm
3:27
disappointed at and I've got over about
3:29
200 plants in this year so I want a good
3:31
crop of strawberries so I'm going to
3:33
look at netting them up and the same
3:35
goes for my blueberries as well my dad
3:37
always nets his up and he gets a
3:39
fantastic crop on them they've all got
3:41
flowers on them at the moment they're
3:42
looking absolutely gorgeous i'm looking
3:43
at them now while I'm doing this video
3:45
but yeah they're all getting flowers on
3:47
them everything's bursting with life
3:49
we've got the apple blossom coming out
3:51
on the cooking apple tree and on the
3:53
other eating apple trees as well so
3:55
hopefully we get a good crop this year
3:57
we're due a good year last year weren't
4:00
a good year for growing we didn't get
4:02
much sunshine but certain things did
4:04
grow well but hopefully we'll get a good
4:07
crop this year and I'm looking forward
4:09
to this year i think we're going to have
4:10
a hot summer with the way this year
4:12
started i think we're going to get a
4:14
very good year of growing down here at
4:17
the a lotment this year and I'm prepared
4:18
for it i won't be obviously down as much
4:20
this year because I only work get two
4:23
days off a week now before I used to
4:25
work four on four off so I could spend a
4:26
lot of time down here but I only get two
4:28
days off a week now but I have started
4:30
coming down at night when I finish early
4:32
from work i'm down here now at evening
4:35
and it's absolutely gorgeous peaceful
4:37
it's lovely um we've got obviously the
4:40
beautiful sunshine so yeah I'm going to
4:41
start making it down at nighttime
4:43
whereas possible and hopefully start
4:45
recording a lot more videos for you all
4:47
to watch and enjoy and yeah thank you
4:51
for those that do follow me and do
4:53
support me if you aren't following me do
4:55
give me a follow as I do appreciate it
4:57
and I just enjoy sharing what I'm
4:59
getting up to down here and I always say
5:02
I'm not a professional gardener i'm an
5:04
amateur gardener i'm learning every
5:06
single day and that's the thing with
5:07
gardening we're learning every single
5:09
day and you do get failures and if you
5:12
get a failure don't let it disappoint
5:13
you just try again i try certain things
5:16
every single year and sometimes they
5:17
never grow but I just give them a try
5:19
and try again seeds aren't that
5:21
expensive from certain places so yeah we
5:24
have lots of fun in growing down here at
5:26
the a lotment so I hope you've enjoyed
5:28
this video and feel free like I said to
5:31
leave a comment and get involved as well
5:34
and if you're new to gardening welcome
5:36
to the gardening world and hopefully you
5:38
will have a fantastic year of growing
5:41
with Ben or should I say gardening with
5:43
Ben so until next time everyone remember
5:46
keep smiling keep shining and keep
5:49
gardening with Ben everyone we'll see
5:50
you all later
