0:44
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben for another brand new
0:52
episode well we said we'd be back today
0:55
to let you know how we got on with the
0:57
storm damage of storm Dara down at the
1:00
allotment well I was dreading absolutely
1:03
going down there like I drove down there
1:06
and I could see on different plots
1:09
issues what had happened from the storm
1:11
like people's poly tunnels and stuff
1:13
ripped and I thinking no what's going to
1:16
be happening on mine so I got down and
1:19
got to my shed and had a look at it and
1:22
one of my pieces of perspects had come
1:24
off the front so that's easily
1:26
replaceable I've got some spare
1:28
perspects to stick on it
1:31
and also a piece of the roof had come
1:33
off as well which is in an easy position
1:36
because I can just lean over and fasten
1:38
a new piece
1:39
on thankfully it's not right in the
1:42
middle or I wouldn't be able to get up
1:44
to replace it but yeah not much damage
1:48
done to the shed thankfully and then I
1:51
went on to obviously check my poly
1:53
tunnel and my poly tunnel was still all
1:56
stuck together with tape I thought how
1:59
the hell as that managed to stay
2:01
together because every year I end up
2:03
like putting new tape on it etc etc the
2:06
water washes it off eventually and
2:09
loosens it up and then obviously it
2:12
comes unstuck and it just needs be
2:15
sticking again with fresh tape but yeah
2:18
it's still in one piece which I'm
2:20
absolutely surprised that but thankfully
2:23
not much damage done to my plot that I
2:26
know of well that I've seen so far so
2:30
hopefully we'll get them pieces replaced
2:32
and fixed over the coming weeks when
2:34
it's a bit nicer down at the allotment
2:38
well what did I do down at the allotment
2:40
today well I did absolutely
2:43
nothing basically I did nothing down
2:46
there um I just went to inspect it and
2:49
then I came home again I thought I can't
2:52
be bothered going do staying at the plot
2:54
today it was cold it was absolutely
2:57
chucking it down and yeah I just did
2:59
didn't fancy being down at the plot
3:01
today so I thought I'll come home and
3:03
have a chilled day so basically this
3:06
weekend I've hardly done anything down
3:08
at my plot I've just put some plastic on
3:10
my shelving to stop the rain from
3:12
rotting it as my shed does drip all over
3:15
the place so I've put some plastic down
3:18
to protect the shelving and hopefully
3:20
stop it from rotting so hopefully
3:22
fingers crossed come next week we'll be
3:25
able to get back in the mood for
3:27
gardening and get some work done so it's
3:29
been a bit of a lazy weekend this
3:31
weekend we all deserve a weekend off
3:34
every now and then don't we so then I
3:37
did actually go to Morrison's on the way
3:39
home as I needed a few bits and I ended
3:42
up picking up a PO Setter uh I could
3:45
never say the word properly but we
3:46
picked up one of
3:48
those as obviously that is a Christmas
3:51
plan and you can never seem to keep the
3:53
leaves on them can you uh I don't know
3:55
if you can but let me know any tips if
3:57
you manage to be able to keep the leaves
4:00
on them pretty well and we also picked
4:03
up a red amarillis as I like to grow one
4:06
of these every single year in my flat
4:08
because the flowers on them look
4:10
absolutely fantastic when they come up I
4:12
may even pick a few High SS up uh
4:15
soonish uh we'll have to have a look
4:17
into them because obviously they had a
4:19
nice smell into your flat as well so I
4:22
might pick up a few of them and get them
4:24
growing as well in the flat just to add
4:27
a bit of color and a bit of fragrance to
4:29
to my flat and make it smell
4:31
fresh not that it doesn't smell fresh
4:33
already but yeah you can understand what
4:36
I mean so yeah it's been a bit of a
4:39
waste of a weekend a bit of a wash out
4:41
alog together uh we do have some of
4:44
those weekends but like I said I'm
4:47
pretty ahead of schedule for getting my
4:50
plot ready for next year uh all my beds
4:52
are dug over it's just a case of Tiding
4:56
it up and basically sorting out my shed
4:59
and polyol ready for next year so we've
5:02
got about until May time when we're out
5:06
in the actual allotment so we've got
5:07
plenty of time to get it already but
5:09
March time is when we'll start sewing
5:12
all our seeds as
5:14
well and talking off seed growing well I
5:18
wanted to start some onions off I've
5:20
been talking about these for a few
5:21
episodes uh I want to start some onion
5:24
seeds off so I went and had a look at
5:27
what gardening magazines are out at the
5:29
moment cuz I used to get my gardening
5:31
magazines all the time the grow one and
5:33
the kitchen Garden Magazine but um they
5:36
went downhill a bit recently uh the grow
5:39
your own magazine you don't get as many
5:40
seed packets in as you used to you used
5:43
to get 10 packets in all together and I
5:44
think the same for the kitchen Garden
5:46
Magazine uh but you don't get as many
5:48
seed packets in now so it's not as worth
5:50
it uh to buy them I we only buying them
5:53
for the seeds uh mainly but I saw the
5:57
kitchen Garden Magazine had got onion
5:59
seeds in in them so I went and got the
6:01
kitchen Garden Magazine I've not opened
6:03
the magazine up yet actually there's
6:04
other seeds in there so I'll have to
6:06
have a look what's in there and I had a
6:08
look at the grow your own magazine but
6:10
there were just herbs in there so it
6:11
were a bit pointless really so I weren't
6:13
just buying it for the seeds this time
6:16
so we've got the kitchen Garden Magazine
6:17
so we've got some seeds in there so I've
6:19
got my onion seeds so hopefully over the
6:22
next couple of weeks I might be starting
6:24
my onion seeds off and getting them
6:25
started as I once did an experiment
6:28
where I grew onions from seed and also
6:31
from set to see which ones do better
6:34
obviously you start your seeds off
6:35
around December January time you start
6:37
your sets off around March April time
6:40
and the seeds actually did better than
6:42
the sets so I might do an experiment
6:45
again this year and do uh see which ones
6:48
do best out of both just to show you all
6:51
how well each of them do to be honest so
6:54
we're going to start some seeds off and
6:56
I need to start looking into getting my
6:58
pepper seeds and my chili seeds and my
7:00
or jeene seeds as well for next year as
7:03
those are going to be the next
7:04
vegetables that we're starting off down
7:07
at the allotment I want to start them
7:08
off pretty early and get them growing
7:11
and established because the quicker you
7:13
get them going the quicker obviously
7:16
they'll start fruiting next year the
7:17
bigger the plants will be Etc so
7:20
hopefully we get some decent produce off
7:22
them next year so that's our plan for
7:26
the coming weeks but there's not much
7:28
else that will be be doing down at the
7:30
allotment coming up obviously like I
7:32
said I want to start painting inside the
7:34
shed freshing it all up obviously I've
7:37
got some repairs to do on it now
7:39
hopefully we don't get any more big
7:41
storms that we've had like we have this
7:43
weekend down there but I saw Mr pussycat
7:46
or Mrs pussycat this morning gave her
7:48
food gave her some treats and yeah she
7:51
absolutely loved it so
7:53
hopefully we can start planning our
7:56
alotment next week and start thinking
7:59
about what seeds I'm going to be growing
8:00
I'm going to be starting off all my
8:02
Amazon shopping basket start popping in
8:05
all the seeds that I want to grow next
8:07
year and hopefully start some growing
8:11
but I'm excited for next year I'm
8:12
excited to try some new things as well I
8:14
want to look at some new varieties on
8:16
what I'm going to be growing down at the
8:18
alotment I'm always up for trying new
8:21
things and different ideas down at the
8:24
alotment but yeah basically storm D
8:28
didn't do much damage AG overall which
8:30
is what I wanted um it's just that
8:34
thought of not being at your allotment
8:36
obviously if you've got a garden where
8:38
you do all your gardening you can look
8:40
out of your window and see what it's
8:41
like but when you've got an allotment
8:43
and it's not at home you have to like
8:45
travel there to see what it actually
8:47
looks like so I can feel a pain of a lot
8:50
of people and I've seen like a lot of
8:52
posts online of people's green houses
8:55
and
8:57
um popups that I've been damaged and
9:00
bent and broken and I've seen it
9:03
trending on Google like uh I look often
9:06
like gardening Trends and stuff like
9:08
that on Google and today's trending
9:10
topic is um Greenhouse glass replacement
9:15
so quite a lot of people have obviously
9:16
got Greenhouse glass and that is one
9:19
thing that I do recommend on moving away
9:22
from if you've got a greenhouse is to
9:25
replace them with the perspect panels uh
9:28
my dad's Greenhouse used to be glass and
9:30
he replaced it all with perspects uh
9:33
sheeting rather than glass um the
9:36
perspects can blow out but obviously
9:38
it'll stay in one piece if it blows out
9:40
rather than the glass blowing out and
9:42
it's smashing and having to replace it
9:46
but my dad's made my his Greenhouse so
9:49
solid that none of the plastic ppcs
9:51
blows out he like screwed pieces of wood
9:53
behind it so that they don't pop out and
9:56
yeah we uh obviously we inspected this
9:59
morning and my dad came down just to
10:01
have a look because my dad will be the
10:03
one that helps me repair it he's the one
10:05
who's got all the DIY skills and he
10:07
checked his greenhouse and it's still
10:09
solid still still in one piece still
10:13
fantastic but yeah he knows what he's
10:15
doing and he's the man who gives me all
10:18
the tips and advice it's good to learn
10:20
from somebody and my dad's my
10:22
inspiration of my gardening so I hope
