Hey everyone and welcome to Gardening with Ben
0:03
Well today we're going to be planting our Simplice Seed garlic. And this variety is called Maddoch White
0:11
And look at the size of those bulbs. Absolutely huge. So hopefully, fingers across, we could grow some this size, but we'll see
0:19
We'll see how we get on. So what we need to do first is we need to take all the cloves apart and get them planted
0:26
When I first started growing garlic, I used to just think, oh, you just plant that
0:29
one in and you'll get one back but nope you need to separate it and get all the cloves and
0:34
plant them individually you can either plant them straight into the ground or you can start them off in
0:40
seed trays first until they get a good shoot on them and some roots and then plant them out we'll
0:46
show you both ways of what to do so that if you want to try them in seed trays first it's up to you
0:52
people tend to grow them in seed trays because squirrels and mice and birds will come and try and
0:58
pinch them and birds like to eat the green shoots off the top of them so some
1:03
people like to start them like that but if you planting them outside put netting over and that usually stops them So yeah let get separating it all So we now separated all the cloves and it smells really really garlic
1:18
But we've got about 27 plants here from two bulbs. So we've got absolutely loads
1:24
So hopefully it will get nice big garlic bulbs next year. So we're going to try them off in a seed tray and show you what they look like in there
1:33
and we're also going to plant them outside as well. Now the sort of seed tray that you want is a six-pack like this
1:41
Pop your holes in just like that. Make sure the flat part of the garlic goes to the bottom
1:48
and you just plant them as simple as that. Nice and easy
2:01
Just like so. So what you do with now is keep them watered, keep them in a shed or greenhouse or polytunnel
2:10
wait until they got decent shoots on them decent roots on them and then you transfer them outside But we going to be planting them outside so we going to take them out and plant them all outdoors the reason why some people plant them
2:23
in seed trace first is because the mice the rats the squirrels will pinch them all stuff like that
2:27
but we're going to plant them outside we're going to net them so that they're protected and hopefully
2:32
we'll get them growing the reason why we start them off in october is because it needs the cold
2:37
to help split the bulbs and create the formation of the big massive clove so that's why we'll plant them now some people plant them like
2:47
march down but the cold won't get to them as much as the winter would so we need to get them in
2:52
the ground for october perfectly and we best get them planted so we've got a bed ready for putting
2:59
us garlic in so we put some compost over the top just give it a bit of extra nutrition and hopefully
3:04
get started we've already got some garlic growing in this bed what we planted last week but yeah
3:12
out look at that one actually got a shoot on it look it growing there good side it a good side but yeah let get us garlic in up there and get it planted so we planted our maddock white so we left a bit of space in between them to keep them easily weeded and yeah we don
3:35
put on them too deep just nice and pushed in we've put a little side up with the date on it so that we
3:40
know what when we actually planted them and the varieties so that we know we keep growing again next year
3:45
if they grow well so yeah all we've got to do now is just net them over
3:50
to protect them so we've got our garlic now covered over with netting to protect it from the birds
3:59
the pigeons the mice the rats the squirrels from digging it all up so once it starts growing
4:06
then we'll remove the netting and let it grow freely just protect it until it gets growing and
4:10
gets going so yeah hopefully we'll get some awesome garlic this year so i hope you've enjoyed that
