hey everyone it's gardening with Ben I
0:02
hope you're all well well we're back
0:04
down here at the alotment we're in the
0:05
shed today and today's job is we're
0:08
going to be pinching out our sweet peas
0:12
[Music]
0:31
as we start our sweet peas off uh well
0:33
this is the first time we've done it we
0:35
started them off in
0:38
October well around the end of September
0:43
beginning of October and we've start
0:46
them off then because we've read up that
0:48
the plants grow better and more flowers
0:53
come on them next year they flower
0:54
earlier and they get a better root
0:57
system on them so that they're better
0:59
for plan out when you plant them out in
1:01
May time ready for them to start
1:04
flowering the reason why we're going to
1:06
pinch them out is because then it makes
1:08
the plant more bushier it produces more
1:11
side shoots on it and also it has more
1:15
flowers on it which is what we want you
1:17
don't have to pinch them out if you're
1:20
wanting to grow them for for
1:22
displays pinching them out will create
1:25
better displays whereas if you leave
1:27
them normal they'll just produce one
1:29
Vine with less flowers on but bigger
1:31
flowers on them so if you wanted them
1:33
for a vase and stuff like that it's
1:35
probably best not pinching them out but
1:37
if you wanted them for display like in
1:39
your garden or your alotment pinching
1:41
them out will create a bigger Bush and
1:44
more flowers on them so let's have a
1:46
look at our sweet peas what we're going
1:48
to do I've just got a bird crawling
1:50
along the top of the roof of the
1:52
shed so yeah these have grown absolutely
1:56
wild they're probably bigger than they
1:58
should have been but we're going to
1:59
pinch all back and tidy them all up and
2:01
sort them all out and hopefully get them
2:04
to Bush out ready for next
2:09
year so pinching them out is quite easy
2:12
what you wanted to do is you wanted to
2:14
find about the third Leaf up on the
2:17
sweet pee and then you pinch it back to
2:21
that so they're going to be quite short
2:23
once we pinch them all that because as
2:24
you can see they've grown absolutely
2:26
wild If This Were next year they'd be
2:29
ready for planting out but we can't
2:30
plant them out because it's too cold and
2:32
it'll kill off the plants so you're
2:34
looking for the third Leaf so this one's
2:37
an ideal one because this one's not got
2:39
too big so that's like one two three and
2:42
then you just pinch it off where the
2:44
leaf and the stem join and just pinch it
2:48
off just like that nice and easy so that
2:52
one's pinched out and then it'll grow
2:55
lots more side shoots off it and grow
2:57
more flowers on it so we've got to get
2:59
through all these and pinch them all
3:01
back so let's get cracking with this and
3:03
let's show you the end
3:04
result so as you can see they look
3:07
absolutely tons better they're more
3:10
organized more better and as you can see
3:12
some of them have got little side shoots
3:14
growing on them already so they will
3:16
help Bush it out and produce a bushier
3:19
plants which will produce more flowers
3:21
in times and as you can see the roots
3:23
are coming through the bottom which
3:25
means it's got a good root
3:27
system snipping them back also will help
3:30
encourage better roots on the plantet as
3:32
it will concentrate on growing more
3:34
Roots ready for when you plant them out
3:36
obviously we've got a lot of sweet peas
3:37
in here but yeah they'll separate nice
3:40
and easy and we'll be able to plant them
3:42
out so make sure you stay tuned for when
3:44
we're planting them out next year so as
3:47
you can see we've got absolutely Lads to
3:49
sort out I love sweet peas growing at my
3:53
alotment because the more you keep
3:55
pruning the flowers off the more they'll
3:57
keep growing all the way through summer
3:59
and they smell absolutely fantastic so
4:02
yeah we got all these to prun
4:04
back hey everyone it's gardening with

the
4:36
episode so there that is all them done
4:40
it looks a lot better they look less
4:42
scraggly more tidy and hopefully they're
4:45
all going to Bush out ready for next
4:47
year so we're going to keep these
4:49
watered in the PO Greenhouse until next
4:52
year it's not a heated Greenhouse but
4:55
yeah hopefully they'll stay alive and
4:57
hopefully we'll be planting them out I'm
4:59
getting absolutely loads of blooms next
