Windols seem perfect in January in the
0:04
UK to get growing those seedlings, but
0:06
they can cause problems. Welcome to
0:09
Gardening with Ben. Today we're going to
0:10
talk about window growing. Now, yeah,
0:14
when I first got my a lotment, I thought
0:16
I looked at seed packets and I thought,
0:18
"Oh, it says January. I can start these
0:19
off now. We can get them growing and get
0:22
them going, ready for my a lotment and
0:24
planting out when it gets warmer." Now,
0:26
I made the massive mistake in doing
0:28
that. I bought loads of seedlings for
0:30
January and I started them all off and
0:32
yeah, they did get growing and yes, we
0:34
had issues. Now, the issues that you get
0:37
with growing lots of seeds in January on
0:39
a window is that they will grow leggy.
0:44
Now, leggy means that they'll the
0:46
natural light from a window will stretch
0:49
the plants and it will cause issues
0:52
because they grow really thin and
0:54
spindly and they don't grow well at all.
0:57
and it causes a lot of issues in the
1:04
So, starting them off on a window, they
1:06
will be stretching towards the light,
1:09
which causes them to point towards the
1:11
light. So, if you are growing seeds on a
1:14
window, make sure you keep turning them
1:15
around so that it strengthens the plants
1:19
out. Now, like I've said in previous
1:21
videos, the only vid the only seeds that
1:24
I start this month are the oragans,
1:26
peppers, and chilies. Now, all the other
1:30
seedlings can wait until March time when
1:33
it's a lot warmer and the days are
1:35
longer for the natural light, and I
1:37
start all them off in my own heated
1:39
greenhouse, and they do absolutely
1:41
perfect. Now, obviously starting them
1:45
off on a winter, it does get cold at
1:47
night. So, the cold comes through the
1:49
window and it will affect the roots. It
1:52
can affect the plants and it can affect
1:54
them in growing. So, be careful what you
1:58
do start on your windows and wait until
2:01
it's warmer and start them off in March
2:04
time. And also growing in the house, dry
2:08
air causes stress on the plants.
2:11
Obviously, it's pretty dry in the house.
2:13
It you don't get much moisture and it
2:16
can affect the plants and affect the
2:18
growing of it. And you don't want to
2:20
waste money on seedlings and lose them
2:24
all. So, it's better off sometimes
2:26
waiting until it's warmer, until it's
2:28
nicer to get growing all them plants in
2:31
your greenhouse and poly tunnel. And
2:34
it's better to wait in the long run and
2:36
get a better result and a better
2:37
harvest. And what's a couple of extra
2:40
months? Yes, you do get excited at the
2:42
beginning of the year thinking, "Oh, I
2:43
can get back to my garden and get
2:45
growing again, but there's always plenty
2:47
of other jobs to be doing around
2:49
January, February time down at the
2:50
autumn. You can be cleaning your green
2:52
houses out. You can be digging over your
2:53
beds, getting them all ready, and then
2:55
in March, April time, concentrate on
2:57
growing the seedlings and potting them
3:00
all on and preparing them all ready for
3:02
growing in summer. So, make sure you
3:05
drop a support to stay up to date when
3:07
we plant all our plants and seeds down
3:09
at the aotment. Until next time
3:11
everyone, remember, keep smiling, keep
3:13
shining, and keep gardening with Ben
