Why aren't your vegetables growing?
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And we're
0:04
going to talk about why your vegetables
0:06
aren't growing. And a lot of people ask
0:09
me, I've planted some seeds, Ben, and
0:11
they're not germinating or they're not
0:13
growing. Sometimes it can be down to the
0:16
old seed packets if they're old and
0:18
they've been hanging around for a while
0:19
and they're no good anymore. And yeah,
0:22
that might be one of the reasons why. Or
0:24
it might not be warm enough in your
0:26
greenhouse yet if you're growing them in
0:27
an unheated greenhouse. That's one of
0:29
the reasons why they don't germinate.
0:31
And obviously poor and lack lack of soil
0:34
and the good nutrition in it. Make sure
0:37
you get a good seed compost when you're
0:39
growing your seeds. And I always put cl
0:42
on top of mine to keep them warmer, keep
0:43
them moist, and that speeds up the
0:45
germination of them. Next up is poor
0:48
soil. If you've got poor soil in your
0:49
garden, make sure you add some nutrition
0:52
into it and soil improvement, and
0:54
hopefully that will help produce better
0:56
vegetables. Not enough sunlight. My plot
1:00
gets a lot of shade on it. So, plan your
1:02
plot according to how much sunlight you
1:04
want have. Stay down on your plot for a
1:07
full day and see where the sun actually
1:09
goes on it and see what can be grown
1:11
where. Obviously, like potatoes can be
1:13
grown in a shady area cuz they're
1:15
growing underground. But have a look and
1:17
see what vegetables can grow in sunlight
1:19
and not in sunlight. Plan your plot
1:22
according to the sun. Overcrowding. Some
1:26
people think, "Oh, I'll just plant
1:27
another thing in there and plant another
1:29
thing in there. I've got space. I've got
1:30
space." But that's not always the case.
1:32
Leave room in between your plants so
1:34
that you can weed them and that they can
1:36
grow to the full size that are needed.
1:38
And don't overcrowd the plants or you
1:41
won't get good harvests. As they're all
1:44
fighting for nutrition, they're all
1:45
fighting for water. So, make sure you
1:47
leave enough space in between the plants
1:50
and use it wisely. Less vegetables
1:52
sometimes means better harvests.
1:59
consistent watering. Now, when it gets
2:01
to summer, you will need to go down to
2:02
your pot most days and water. Obviously,
2:05
the best time in the day is usually
2:08
early on in the morning before the heat
2:10
starts. That's when I usually like to
2:12
water. And if you water at night, that's
2:14
when the slugs come out. So, it's best
2:16
off watering early in the morning every
2:18
day and getting it over and done with.
2:20
And then you can sit back and relax and
2:25
pests or diseases. Go around and check
2:27
for pests on a regular basis. Like if
2:29
you got any cabbages and cauliflowers,
2:31
check under the leaves. Make sure that
2:33
there's no eggs from butterflies in
2:35
them. And yeah, check on them on a
2:37
regular basis and see how they're doing.
2:39
If you think you've got a disease on
2:41
your plant, get rid of it. Burn it.
2:44
Don't put in the compost feet because it
2:46
can spread the disease. And yeah, get
2:49
rid of the plant if it's not looking
2:51
good at all. Improving your soil and
2:55
your spacing will get you better
2:57
harvests in the long run. So, you need
2:59
to nurture it to get good harvests. So,
