What vegetables can you plant in August?
0:04
Well, we're halfway through August and
0:05
if you've not sewn these plants, you can
0:08
still sew them now as obviously it might
0:11
start getting cooler now. Who knows, we
0:14
could have another heat wave. But these
0:15
are the vegetables that you can sew this
0:18
month down at your a lotment or in the
0:20
garden. So, let's get a notepad and jot
0:23
down all these what you can grow. First
0:26
up is lettuce. Now, the best variety to
0:29
grow is the cut and come again lettuce.
0:31
So that you can just keep snipping it
0:32
off as and when you are ready to grow
0:35
it. So don't grow the iceberg. Grow the
0:37
cut and come again lettuce. Now next up
0:41
is spinach. Another good vegetable to
0:45
keep snipping off and using as and when
0:47
you need it. And obviously now that is
0:49
getting a bit cooler, it will grow
0:51
better now rather than in the main
0:54
summertime. Spring onion. Now, you need
0:56
a winter hardy variety to grow at this
1:00
time of year. So, have a look around,
1:02
check your packets, make sure that it's
1:04
a hardy variety, and get sewing some
1:06
spring onion throughout the winter
1:08
period. Next up is radish. A good fast
1:11
growing vegetable. Now, you can be
1:13
harvesting these in 8 weeks, as fast as
1:15
that. So, if you wanting a quick crop,
1:18
get some radish in now before it does
1:20
start to get cooler. Next up is k robbi.
1:23
Not something that I've tried before,
1:24
but I'm always willing to give it a try.
1:26
So, I may possibly sew some myself to
1:29
see what they like and how they taste.
1:31
I've never actually grown them myself.
1:33
So, let me know in the comments if
1:34
you've grown colabi before. Next up is
1:37
pack choy. Another one which is where
1:39
you can cut it and use it as and when
1:42
you actually need to grow, eat it.
1:45
Turnips. Another autumn winter veg that
1:48
will grow fast. So if you want it in
1:50
some turnips in your Sunday dinner, get
1:52
sewing some now and you will be
1:54
harvesting them later on in the year.
1:56
Finally is corn salad. Another great
2:00
variety to try. And yeah, there's a few
2:03
there what you can try and see how you
2:05
get on with. Now if you've got a poly
2:07
tunnel or greenhouse, you can actually
2:09
grow some things inside there throughout
2:11
the winter period. And these are the
2:13
ones that you can actually use to grow.
2:16
Now up is a winter lettuce. So if you've
2:18
got a poly tunnel or a greenhouse, get
2:21
some winter lettuce in and keep them
2:23
crops growing all the way through the
2:24
winter period. Then you can actually try
2:27
chard as well. Grow that indoors and
2:29
keep that growing throughout the winter
2:31
period until it gets really cold when
2:32
it'll probably die off. But try giving
2:35
chard a try and add that to your salads.
2:38
Undercover is spring cabbage. Now, if
2:41
you're wanting some cabbages in early
2:42
springtime, get sewing them now to plant
2:45
out and get growing. Vegetables that you
2:48
can plant out now to get growing
2:51
throughout the winter period. So, that's
2:52
planting them outside. They need to be
2:54
ready plants and these are first off are
2:57
leaks. Leaks can grow through the winter
2:59
period and you can get a great crop. The
3:01
cold weather does help some of the
3:03
plants grow. So, have a look at the
3:05
varieties and you can grow some leaks
3:07
through the winter period. Is kale. Kale
3:09
is a fantastic hardy crop which can grow
3:12
well in cold weather and keep that
3:14
produce growing throughout all the
3:15
winter period and it's absolutely
3:17
delicious however you cook it and it
3:20
will add some vegetables to your Sunday
3:24
dinner as well. So there's a few
3:26
varieties of kale. There's curly kale,
3:27
there's purple kale, there's green kale,
3:30
there's loads of varieties of kale out
3:31
there. So give them a try and see which
3:33
one is your favorite. Next up is autumn
3:36
cauliflower. Now, obviously the name
3:39
comes from it. It's an autumn variety.
3:41
Get planting those out now and you can
3:44
have some cauliflowers throughout the
3:45
autumn period is Calibrize broccoli. Get
3:49
planting that out now and you can keep
3:51
the crops coming throughout the autumn
3:53
and the winter period. So, those are the
3:56
vegetables that you can plant in August.
3:58
Give them a try. Let me know what you're
4:00
trying down in your a lotment and your
4:01
