Just because you can sew it in January
0:02
in the UK doesn't mean you should.
0:05
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And today
0:07
we're going to be talking about why you
0:09
shouldn't necessarily start your seeds
0:12
off in January and what seeds to avoid
0:18
Now, the biggest seed what I see a lot
0:21
of people growing is tomatoes. As the
0:24
packets will often say, start from
0:28
all the way up to April. And yeah, seed
0:31
packets obviously give you a date when
0:34
you can start them, but it's not
0:36
necessarily right for the area that you
0:38
live in. Now, I live up north in the UK,
0:42
so it's a lot colder than it would be
0:44
down in Cornwall, for instance. So
0:47
obviously the growing difference is
0:50
about a month in time when to start
0:54
seedlings off. Now I see a lot of people
0:58
starting the tomatoes off and other
1:00
vegetables pretty early in January
1:02
because obviously like I said the seed
1:04
packet says January so people think oh I
1:06
can start them off now. whereas however
1:09
they don't necessarily grow well at all
1:12
and you'll end up wasting money on seeds
1:15
and if you purchased all like heirloom
1:17
seeds and F1 seeds they can be pretty
1:19
expensive to buy and you'll end up
1:23
having to buy more to sew them again.
1:25
And the reason why these fail and don't
1:28
do well is because they need the heat
1:31
and the light to grow. You may think,
1:33
"Oh, I've got the heat in my house. I
1:35
can start them all off there." But if
1:37
there's not enough natural light, the
1:39
days aren't that long at the moment. So
1:41
if there's not enough natural light,
1:43
they won't grow well at all. And the way
1:45
that they don't grow well is that
1:47
they'll grow leggy, which means that
1:49
they start stretching when they growing
1:51
towards the light. And if they stretch,
1:54
they won't grow very well. They'll grow
1:56
thin and spindly, and they won't often
2:00
recover very well at all. Obviously,
2:02
people say if they grow leggy, you can
2:04
plant them a bit deeper so that they'll
2:06
grow well, but it's not always easy and
2:09
you end up snapping them when you're
2:11
trying to plant them and end up losing
2:13
them again. So, it's always best to
2:16
start a bit later than what the actual
2:19
seed packets say. I often say now I
2:22
don't start all my seeds off till March
2:24
as that is when we get quite a bit of
2:26
light and it starts warming up again.
2:30
February can be known for a snowy month.
2:32
So often I start all my seeds around
2:35
middle of March towards the end of March
2:37
and into April. And sometimes we're
2:41
lucky we get a little heat wave around
2:43
Easter time, which we have over the last
2:45
couple of years. And that is perfect for
2:46
starting all the seeds off and
2:48
germinating them. Now I've been starting
2:50
my seeds off around March time for the
2:51
last 20 years. And I get amazing crops
2:53
down at the plot. When I first started
2:55
my a lotment, I went off the seed
2:56
packets and I thought, "Oh, I can start
2:58
all these this month." However, no,
3:00
don't start them off in January. Wait
3:03
until March time. The only seeds that
3:05
are best to be started off now are the
3:06
chilies, the oragans, and the peppers
3:09
because they need a long growing season.
3:11
But again, make sure they get enough
3:12
heat and natural light. Now, they'll
3:16
need the window for the light, and
3:18
they'll need a nice warm temperature.
3:20
They need about 25 degrees to germinate.
3:22
So, that is some of the reasons why not
3:25
to sew this month. And some crops hate
3:29
low light levels. So without the right
3:31
light, they won't grow well. It's best
3:34
off starting them in a greenhouse when
3:35
it gets to March time because the light
3:38
in the greenhouse is amazing. And if
3:42
they're against cold wind, the cold will
3:44
hit them at the night and they will
3:46
suffer and possibly not develop as well
3:49
as they should do. So yeah, January is
3:52
about choosing wisely and only growing
3:55
the things that need to be sewn this
3:58
month. So make sure you drop us a follow
4:00
to stay up to date with what we're
4:02
sewing all our seeds and what we're
4:04
planting. Until next time everyone,
4:06
remember keep smiling, keep shining and
4:08
keep gardening with Ben everyone.
