0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34

0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben for another brand new
0:52
episode well it is Sunday today and I'm
0:57
recording this on Saturday night and
1:00
wow it is absolutely horrendous the
1:04
weather it's not as horrendous as what
1:06
other people have had it obviously I'm
1:08
based in Sheffield which is more Inland
1:11
than on the coast where Wales is and
1:14
Liverpool and Blackpool and all that
1:16
area so I'm not on that side of the
1:19
coast I'm in the middle of the country
1:21
and the wind has been awful we've had
1:23
torrential rain it's been absolutely
1:27
awful today and I'm really really really
1:30
dreading driving onto my alotment
1:33
tomorrow because I'm scared that my shed
1:37
might have blown away collapsed pieces
1:40
might have flown off it my polyl might
1:43
have ripped and yeah I'm really not
1:46
looking forward to going down to my
1:48
allotment tomorrow fingers crossed it's
1:51
all Stood Still and survived but we'll
1:54
have to wait and see and hopefully keep
1:56
them fingers crossed and hopefully that
1:59
you have not had much damage as well in
2:01
your Gardens and your allotments and
2:04
hopefully you will be able to recover
2:06
from this bad storm and that's the thing
2:08
we we have to get used to this around
2:10
winter time we get these storms and we
2:13
just have to keep us fingers crossed and
2:15
legs crossed and hope that we don't get
2:18
too much damage we're probably bound to
2:21
get a bit of damage but hopefully not a
2:23
load so we'll have to wait and see and
2:26
see what it looks like tomorrow so yeah
2:29
make sure you to next episode so that
2:31
you find out how my allotment is
2:33
standing and if it is still standing I
2:37
presume that it will actually be okay so
2:40
we'll hope and we'll pray that
2:42
everything is safe so today's episode is
2:46
where we talk about what we have been up
2:48
to down at the allotment today yes I did
2:52
go to the allotment this morning and yes
2:55
I did get quite a bit done but it was
2:57
absolutely torrential rain so I couldn't
3:00
stay outside and do any work outside
3:02
like I wanted to I wanted to do some
3:04
jobs in my strawberry patch but I
3:06
couldn't get round to doing them because
3:08
it was just awful outside so I went in
3:10
the shed and obviously I listened to my
3:13
own podcast giving me tips and advice on
3:15
what to do in the shed at this time of
3:17
year so I've been doing quite a bit of
3:20
tidying up I've been throwing away any
3:22
plants that were growing in there what
3:25
haven't taken or I forgotten to water
3:28
them and they've died
3:30
uh so I've been throwing all them away
3:31
clearing them all away and putting all
3:34
the compost into a bucket which I'll use
3:36
again in my beds and stuff I never waste
3:39
compost I always dig it into the beds uh
3:42
The Leftovers that I've got from my pots
3:44
and stuff like that so I've been tidying
3:47
all them up and also what I've been
3:49
doing is I've been taking all the plants
3:52
off of the shelves and I've got a load
3:55
of plastic uh really strong plastic like
3:58
polyol plastic
4:00
which I got spare from years ago and it
4:03
was just shoved under my one of my
4:05
benches and I thought I'm going to use
4:07
that to protect my shelving in my
4:10
allotment in my shed so I've been
4:13
cutting it all down and putting it on
4:15
the shelving and then putting the plant
4:17
pots back on it which is quite time
4:19
consuming because you have to lift every
4:20
little plant pot off there and lift more
4:23
back on again and yeah it's been quite a
4:26
big job today so we've done half of my M
4:29
Elin today so hopefully tomorrow we're
4:32
going to do the other half the weather
4:34
is still looking bad again for tomorrow
4:37
here in shefield so it looks like rain
4:39
again so I'll probably be stuck inside
4:41
the shed or I'll be repairing everything
4:45
that's broken and damaged but we'll see
4:47
we'll see how things are
4:50
so while I was in the shed as well I was
4:52
trying to work out what Renovations I
4:55
want to do inside it so like I said I'm
4:57
going to Spruce it all up this winter
4:59
and make it look nice for next year and
5:02
I've been looking at what colors to
5:04
paint it inside at the moment most of
5:07
the wood is painted like a green color
5:10
and I want to change the color I want to
5:11
brighten it up and make it look more
5:13
attractive so I'm looking at painting it
5:16
a nice letter box red paint color so
5:20
that's my plan to paint all the wood up
5:22
PLT all the metal up and make it look
5:25
nice for next year and hopefully a lot
5:29
brighter but obviously we can't paint
5:31
them at the moment because the wood is
5:33
quite damp from all the rain and
5:35
everything because it just soaks through
5:37
from the roof and everything down into
5:39
the wood it's it's not rotten or
5:41
anything it's pretty strong wood but
5:43
while ever it's damp I can't be watering
5:45
it at the moment not watering it
5:48
painting it so I can't be painting it at
5:50
the moment so we're going to let it dry
5:52
out usually we get like dry spells in
5:55
January time when it's just cold and
5:57
Frosty and not raining so maybe we'll
6:00
get it painted around then we've just
6:01
got to get wait for some decent weather
6:04
to start painting inside
6:06
it but yeah I'm going to be looking at
6:10
hopefully sewing my onion seeds as well
6:13
soon and my peppers and my Auber jeans
6:17
seeds because usually start them off
6:19
around January time so I'm going to be
6:22
looking at getting all them
6:24
started my onions I'll probably start
6:26
off down in my shed because they should
6:29
germinate all right fingers
6:32
crossed hopefully they'll have enough
6:35
warmth to get them to germinate but my
6:38
peppers and my orber jeans I'm going to
6:41
start them off in my flat because I've
6:43
never had a windel in my old flat and
6:47
I've actually got a window Soul here so
6:49
I'm going to start a few Peppers off and
6:51
a few or jein off here in my flat so
6:54
that I can give them that extra start
6:56
and extra warmth to get them germinated
6:58
because Peppers will need like 25 26° to
7:02
germinate so they need really warm
7:05
weather so we're going to start them off
7:06
at home and get them started but the
7:09
thing is when you're starting seeds off
7:11
on your window you have to be careful of
7:14
them being Ley and getting enough light
7:16
so you have to keep turning them around
7:18
and everything like that but yeah once
7:21
they have established then we'll take
7:24
them down into my shed and continue
7:26
growing them down there at the allotment
7:29
but it's just giving them that extra
7:30
boost and extra few months in past I've
7:33
started them off like March time and
7:37
they've only just been producing frood
7:39
by the time it comes to the end of
7:41
summer so we're giving them a few extra
7:43
months to get started and get
7:45
established to get them seeds growing
7:48
down at the
7:49
allotment but yeah I didn't actually do
7:52
a awful lot at all down the alotment
7:55
today uh I fed Miss cat well Mrs cat
7:58
should I say uh I fed her she's always
8:01
waiting as soon as I come down to my
8:03
alment she's like waiting at the gate
8:04
for me and my dad started whistling her
8:08
whenever he comes down to alotment but
8:10
as soon as she is the cars come she'll
8:11
run onto the plot and get in position
8:14
ready to be fed we feed her on a daily
8:16
basis so she's well looked after and uh
8:20
she's just a rogue cat but obviously she
8:22
keeps the rats down and keeps the nice
8:25
down so it's good to have a little
8:27
allotment cat wandering around it's
8:30
probably from one of the houses behind
8:31
the allotment site but she's often down
8:34
on my
8:35
allotment and I did see her at the other
8:37
day so hopefully she managed to get it
8:40
so yeah we've also got all those bird
8:43
feeders to fill up as well uh I thought
8:46
there's no point filling them up today
8:48
because the wind is absolutely awful
8:51
some of the bird feeders were on the
8:53
floor and yeah if I filled them up
8:55
they'd probably just blow off the trees
8:56
again and all the seed would just blow
8:58
all over over the floor so it's pretty
9:00
pointless filling them up today so
9:03
hopefully when the wind dies down we can
9:05
get them all filled back up again for
9:07
the birdies and yeah I brought on my SD
9:11
card for my wildlife camera uh it's not
9:15
got any good footage on it to be honest
9:16
it's not taken any good shots of
9:18
anything so we're going to have to look
9:20
at repositioning that and sorting it out
9:23
hopefully get some Wildlife on it that's
9:26
what we want we want to see some badges
9:27
or we want to see some foxes around I
9:30
just want to capture some nice footage
9:33
of different Wildlife done at the mment
9:35
because that's what I like to do I like
9:36
to encourage the wildli to my plot yeah
9:38
the bad Wildlife some of them like rats
9:40
mice and squirrels but I love seeing all
9:43
the wildlife down there and every little
9:46
thing that I can do to help them I
9:48
certainly will do so yeah hopefully we
9:52
will be back down at the allotment today
9:55
when you're listening to this on Sunday
9:58
so hopefully we'll be back today
10:00
hopefully we'll be able to get some work
10:01
done and then tomorrow's podcast again
10:04
we'll be talking about what we've got up
10:06
to down at the alotment and what we've
10:08
managed to achieve and hopefully get
10:10
done and hopefully I'll give you a
10:13
report on if my shed is still standing
10:15
and my poly tunnel's Still Standing so
10:17
wait for that episode to drop on Monday
10:21
morning so I hope you've enjoyed today's
10:24
episode a little Roundup of what we've
10:25
been getting up to and obviously storm
10:28
