This video explains which vegetables are suitable for early sowing and how to give them the best possible start. It shows crops that establish well and benefit from a longer growing season.
The guide covers suitable sowing conditions, containers, compost, light levels and watering, along with tips to prevent weak seedlings. It also explains how early sowing can lead to stronger plants and earlier harvests.
If you want to maximise your growing season, this video provides practical beginner-friendly advice on starting vegetables successfully.

What are my top five vegetable seeds to
0:03
grow in January? Welcome to Gardening
0:05
with Ben, everyone. We're going to be
0:07
telling you what the top five vegetable
0:09
seeds are to grow this month. So, make
0:12
sure you got your notepads and make a
0:14
note of what vegetable seeds you want to
0:16
be starting off in January for my top
0:19
five picks about the top five vegetable
0:23
seeds to sew this month and why we need
0:25
to sew them as well this month. So, make
0:29
sure you have a notepad so that you can
0:30
make a note of what vegetable seeds you
0:33
need to go out and purchase. So, number
0:36
one has to be the pepper. The pepper is
0:39
an amazing vegetable or is it a fruit a
0:43
fruit to grow? And the reason for this
0:47
is obviously it's expensive to buy.
0:48
They're expensive peppers. So, if you
0:50
can grow them, you'll save a lot of
0:52
money by growing your own peppers. So,
0:55
we need to start them off in January
0:57
because they take a long time to get
1:00
growing and to ripen. And one of the
1:03
years I started them off in March and
1:05
they were only ripening in September,
1:08
but last year I started them off in
1:10
January and they were ripening well in
1:13
time and we got some great crops last
1:15
year. Now, they need 25 degrees to
1:18
germinate which you won't get in a
1:20
greenhouse or poly tunnel unless it is
1:22
heated. And yes, the best option to grow
1:26
them is on a window. I grow all mine on
1:29
a windowsol and they grow fantastic and
1:33
they do get enough light and yeah, they
1:35
grow perfectly. And then I'll take them
1:37
down to the a lotment probably around
1:39
April time when it's a bit warmer. I'll
1:42
have obviously transplanted them when
1:44
they've grown a bit bigger into
1:45
individual pots, but then we'll bring
1:47
them down to the a lotment in April time
1:49
when it's a bit warmer.
1:51
Next up, number two is chilies. Again,
1:55
same as peppers, they take a long time.
1:57
They're pretty similar plants in growing
2:00
and again, they need about 25° to
2:02
germinate. So, they need to go on a
2:04
windowill as well. And obviously, once
2:06
they're big enough, transplant them into
2:08
individual pots and then bring them back
2:11
down to the a lotment around end of
2:13
March, April time when it's warmer and
2:15
you can get growing them bigger.
2:18
Number three has to be the oragene or
2:21
the eggplant if you're watching in
2:23
America. Now
2:26
again, these take a long time to grow
2:28
and they need the time to get growing
2:30
and these need about 20° to germinate.
2:34
So again, they need to be on a window
2:36
rather than in in the greenhouse or the
2:38
poly tunnel. If you've got grow lights,
2:39
fantastic. They will help and aid the
2:42
growing in them. But I grow mine on my
2:44
window and they grew perfectly fine last
2:46
year and we had some amazing crops off
2:49
them. We had so many on them. We only
2:51
had one plant last year and we got so
2:53
many off it. I had enough from one
2:55
plant. So I won't be growing many
2:57
plants. I'll probably start about 10 off
2:59
and choose a few of the best plants to
3:02
keep growing down at the aotment. Number
3:06
four has to be the onion seed. Now,
3:09
onion seeds need time to get growing. If
3:13
you've not grown onion seeds before,
3:15
obviously you get onion seeds and you
3:17
get onion sets. Onion sets are usually
3:19
bigger. They're like a bulb rather than
3:22
the seed. And you will plant them around
3:24
March time straight into the ground or
3:26
in a seed tray to get them started and
3:28
then plant them outside. Now, the seed
3:31
needs obviously the extra few months to
3:33
get started and then you'll plant them
3:36
out around end of March, April time.
3:38
Now, I did an experiment once to see
3:40
which grew best seed or set. I grew them
3:43
in the similar soil into in the beds
3:46
next door to one another, and the seeds
3:48
grew best out of the onions rather than
3:51
the sets. So, I'm growing onion seeds
3:54
again this year down at the a lotment.
3:55
So, make sure you stay tuned to see how
3:57
well they grow this year.
4:00
And number four has to be the broad
4:02
bean. Now, I started mine off around
4:04
November time, straight in the ground,
4:06
but obviously it's frozen around this
4:09
time, so you might not get them growing
4:10
in the ground at this time of year. So,
4:13
the best option is to start them off in
4:16
um
4:17
cells like seed trays or cells, and get
4:21
them started in them, and once they're
4:23
big enough and the ground isn't hard
4:25
enough, get them into the ground. Now,
4:27
the variety that you need to grow at
4:28
this time of year is Aquadulus. Now,
4:31
these are a winter hardy variety of
4:34
broad bean. You don't want the summer
4:36
variety because the cold and the frost
4:38
and the snow will kill them off, which
4:40
you don't want. And they will be ready
4:42
to harvest before the blackfly appear.
4:44
Blackfly love broad beans. And if you
4:47
grow the summer varieties, the blackfly
4:50
have usually covered them. But these
4:52
winter variety ones will be ready to
4:54
harvest before the blackfly appear. So,
4:57
those are my top five vegetable plants
5:00
to grow in January. Make sure you save
5:04
this video, share it to anybody that
5:07
needs it, and leave a comment if you're
5:09
going to be growing any of these as
5:11
well. So until next time everyone
5:13
remember keep smiling, keep shining and
5:16
keep gardening with bed everyone.
