0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben for another brand new
0:52
episode this week well if you've not
0:54
listened to my previous episodes we talk
0:56
about everything that we've got up to
0:58
down at the allotment on Saturday Sunday
1:01
we've braved the rain we've gone down to
1:02
the allotment and we have got some stuff
1:05
done so if you want to find out what
1:08
I've got up to make sure you listen back
1:10
to them
1:13
episodes so in today's episode we're
1:16
going to talk about all the common
1:17
mistakes what gardeners do and I
1:20
certainly make many of them and I'll
1:22
certainly make plenty more of them and
1:24
with gardening you're always learning
1:27
every single day there's always
1:28
something new to learn when you're
1:31
gardening and I learn from mistakes I
1:34
don't mind making mistakes because
1:36
obviously that's how you learn and
1:38
sometimes you fix the mistake and then
1:40
you make the mistake again but you have
1:42
to keep on trying and persevering and
1:45
you will then achieve great things down
1:48
at your alotment and
1:50
gardening but the first we're going to
1:52
talk about five different things down at
1:55
the allotment the five things most
1:58
common on making mistakes Stakes with
2:01
now one of them is
2:03
overwatering and you can commonly
2:06
overwater plants now I didn't learn much
2:09
about this until I actually worked at
2:10
the Garden Center and they taught me how
2:13
to keep things watered and how to check
2:16
to see if they still damp and stuff by
2:18
checking underneath them to see if if
2:20
they're wet underneath because sometimes
2:22
you can just stick your finger on on top
2:24
think it's dry but it's not it might be
2:26
wet deep down and that is where the
2:29
roots are and overwatering them
2:31
obviously can cause root rot which you
2:35
obviously don't want now one of the main
2:39
things that can get uh damaged by
2:42
overwatering is pumpkins marrow squash
2:46
if you're watering near the top of the
2:48
plant they can easily snap off from over
2:51
water and they can cause the rot and
2:54
cause the plant to actually just snap
2:56
off
2:57
easy one thing I learned about watering
3:00
my squash plants like your coet your
3:03
marrows your pumpkins your zucchini if
3:06
you're in America that's what you call
3:07
it not Co
3:09
yet but yeah one thing I learned about
3:11
them is to plant a plant pot at the side
3:14
of them down into the ground and when
3:17
you're watering them water into the
3:19
plant pot and it Waters straight to the
3:21
roots right where the water is needed
3:24
and where the plant needs it and where
3:26
it'll soak it up from I even Chu some
3:29
like chicken pets in it as well so then
3:31
I water straight into that and the
3:32
chicken pellet feed will go straight to
3:34
the roots and feed them that way that's
3:37
one way that I do look after my pumpkins
3:40
and squash and that's one little tip
3:43
that I've learned myself really I just
3:45
saw the video online of people planting
3:47
plant pots but they didn't show putting
3:49
like a bit of food in it or something
3:51
like that so that is how I get great
3:53
produce from that so when you're
3:55
watering make sure that they are fully
3:58
dry or that they not too damp when
4:00
you're watering stuff you don't want
4:02
always want stuff sat in water as again
4:05
sat in water doesn't help them it'll
4:08
just rot them because the water will
4:10
just rot away the roots and then you
4:13
won't have any good produce so just keep
4:16
them watered every few days and they
4:19
should Thrive pretty much when I used to
4:22
have stuff in my polyal growing like my
4:25
peppers and my tomatoes and my cucumbers
4:28
I used to have to water them every
4:29
single day because it did dry out the
4:31
compost dries out so easily and yeah you
4:35
you have to water them every single day
4:38
but just be careful when overwatering
4:40
stuff like
4:41
when we had a drought the year after I
4:45
decided to plant all my tomatoes and my
4:47
cucumbers outside because I knew I
4:49
wouldn't be able to get down to the
4:50
allotment to water them every day in the
4:52
poly tunnel so I planted them outside
4:55
because I knew that the ground holds
4:58
water pretty well so I could water them
5:00
like every three or four days rather
5:03
than every single day and they
5:05
absolutely thrived my cucumbers have
5:07
dumped best that they ever did last year
5:09
and it was the first time that I've ever
5:10
grown them outside so I am going to grow
5:12
my cucumbers outside from now
5:16
on so on to number two ignoring soil
5:21
Health now I didn't learn much about
5:23
soil health for quite a few years down
5:26
at the alotment I just used plant stuff
5:28
every single year didn't used to bother
5:30
looking into my soil and seeing if it
5:32
needed any nutrients and stuff like that
5:35
obviously you can get testers to see uh
5:37
the ph and whether there's any nutrition
5:40
in the soil and stuff like that and
5:43
obviously you can feed your soil as well
5:46
as well as feeding your plants you can
5:47
feed your soil by add adding nutrition
5:50
from adding manure
5:52
adding um special soil food and compost
5:58
or leaf mold
6:00
stuff like that to improve your soil and
6:02
to improve your plants if you don't look
6:04
after your soil your plants will fail
6:06
and they won't do very
6:08
well so you need to start looking after
6:11
your soil and use the winter time to
6:14
improve that soil the winter is the
6:16
perfect time to do it and add in that
6:18
manure and dig it in or layer it on the
6:21
top of the ground and then dig it in in
6:22
the springtime to feed the soil and get
6:25
the nutrition back and hopefully grow
6:27
some fantastic produce down in
6:29
allotments and Gardens I so can't wait
6:32
to get growing again next year it needs
6:34
to hurry up and get to
6:36
Springtime so next up is planting
6:39
without planning now I always go on
6:43
about this at this time of year I draw
6:46
up a plan of my allotment and I write
6:48
down where things are going to grow I
6:50
look at the shade on my allotment where
6:52
trees are what's shady and what's not
6:55
shady what gets full sun all the time
6:57
and plant accordingly and obviously you
7:00
need to look at your spacing as well
7:03
when you're planting plants don't try
7:05
and cram too much in I've done that in
7:07
the past I've got loads of plants
7:09
growing so I've just crammed them in and
7:11
hoped for the best because I don't like
7:13
wasting plants that have grown but if
7:16
you don't leave enough space in it's
7:17
hard to weed in between the plants and
7:19
then the plants won't survive and they
7:21
won't be able to get established and
7:24
grow as well without the good space in
7:26
so you need to keep plenty of space in
7:29
between your plants to keep them weeded
7:31
it's best off to have less plants keep
7:33
them weeded and then you'll get
7:35
fantastic produce as well so look into
7:38
the spacing and also look into companion
7:40
planting I've not really learned much
7:42
about companion planting I need to learn
7:44
about that that is one thing that I need
7:45
to start looking into like I know that
7:48
there's the three sisters if you plant
7:50
like sweet corn Runa beans and something
7:54
else as well they meant to help each
7:57
other when growing them but yeah there's
8:00
different plants that you can plant near
8:02
each other and they will help grow
8:05
better plants so have a look into
8:08
companion planting as well and so do I I
8:10
need to look into that so maybe I'll do
8:12
an episode on companion planting and
8:14
then we'll both learn at the same time
8:17
I'm always learning with gardening
8:19
whenever I'm doing these podcasts I do
8:20
like Research into things so I'm
8:22
learning every single day and I think oh
8:24
I'm going to do that oh that's happened
8:26
to me but yeah you're always always
8:29
always learning with
8:31
gardening so neglecting seasonal timing
8:36
so you need to look into the importance
8:38
of understanding planting calendars you
8:40
need to think of when you're going to
8:43
start sewing your seeds at the right
8:44
time of the year and planting out at the
8:47
right time of the year as well everyone
8:49
gets so excited at the beginning of the
8:51
year when it starts getting warmer like
8:55
sometimes we can have a heat wave around
8:56
Easter time and people start planting
8:59
plants outside and I'm thinking no no
9:01
don't plant them outside yet because you
9:03
can still get a frost um that's the
9:07
saying never cast a cloud till May is
9:11
out and that is to do with the gardening
9:13
that you shouldn't plant outside until
9:16
May is gone because you can still get
9:19
Frost if you're down south in the UK
9:21
possibly you'll be all right but up
9:24
north where I am in Yorkshire you've got
9:26
to think about when the
9:28
frost has passed them when we won't get
9:30
no more frosts and keeping on the
9:33
temperatures and the weather and have a
9:35
look around when you should be planting
9:37
stuff so never get too eager to plant
9:40
stuff outside because if the frost comes
9:42
it can just wipe the lot out so look at
9:44
the calendar and think about when you're
9:47
going to be growing stuff as
9:49
well now the next one the last one which
9:52
is the most important one of the lot and
9:56
I should listen to this yes Ben you need
9:58
to listen to this this and this is
10:01
forgetting to label plants hold your
10:04
hands up everybody who does it nearly
10:07
every year forgetting to label your
10:09
plants yeah I hold my hands up I am a
10:13
plant labeler
10:15
forgetter I'll stand up to that
10:18
one but yeah you need to label your
10:21
plants and I've done in the past like
10:23
I've sewn all my seeds I put my seed
10:25
packets underneath the seed trays and
10:28
then I water them all and the plant
10:30
packets become disintegrated and I can't
10:32
tell what's growing there and then you
10:34
looking at your core Jets your squash
10:36
and your Mars and you're thinking which
10:38
one's which what variey is which oh no
10:43
uh and then you don't know what it is
10:44
until it actually starts growing produce
10:47
on it what actually plant it is it's
10:49
like all the squashes look the same like
10:51
you pumpkin barer and coet then all your
10:55
brassas look the same like your
10:57
cauliflower your cabbage your
10:59
cauliflower your brussel sprouts they
11:01
all look the same and you're thinking no
11:04
what am I doing here I don't know what
11:06
I'm planting and you think no I need to
11:10
label them I need to label so make sure
11:12
you spend time and label all your plants
11:15
up and obviously you can make your own
11:18
plant labels it's cheap enough to do
11:20
just use a milk carton slice it up into
11:23
strips and write down the name of the
11:26
plant with a permanent marker
11:30
and then you can label your plants up
11:33
and if you ever see me doing a video and
11:35
I've not labeled them up make sure you
11:37
commented it Ben label your plants Ben
11:40
label your
11:42
plants I know I'll end up forgetting
11:44
them to do them again but yeah those are
11:47
the five Big M mistakes what you can
11:49
make when you're gardening an alotment
11:51
in and remember one thing that you've
11:55
got to remember is that mistakes help
11:57
you grow just like your plants so it
12:01
doesn't matter if you make mistakes I
12:03
make mistakes all the time and sometimes
12:07
to learn from them sometimes I don't
12:09
learn from them and obviously a lot of
12:11
times I share them with you all the
12:13
mistakes that I do cuz I'm H his
12:15
Gardener I'll tell you what I've done
12:16
good and what I've done rubbish but yeah
12:18
I do share everything with you so I hope
