my top 10 flower seeds to grow this year
0:03
down at the a lotment. Welcome to
0:05
Gardening with Ben and we're going to
0:06
talk about what the top 10 flowers are
0:08
to grow for your a lotment and garden
0:11
and the ones that we're going to be
0:12
trying to grow this year down at the
0:14
plot. I'm excited to try more and more
0:16
flowers down at the plot. Having flowers
0:18
in the a lotment and the garden attracts
0:19
the bees helps with pollination. The
0:21
more bees you get, the more fruit you'll
0:23
get because they'll pollinate and the
0:25
better veg that you'll get as well. Last
0:28
year's fruit was an abundance of fruit
0:30
because we've got more and more flowers
0:32
growing on the plot. So, more and more
0:34
bees are coming which are helping with
0:36
the pollination. So, my top 10 flowers
0:39
to try and grow this year down at the
0:41
plot. First one has to be the sunflower.
0:44
Absolutely love it. It's one of my
0:46
favorite flowers of all time. And yes,
0:49
it don't come back every year unless you
0:51
get a perennial variety, but I love the
0:54
sunflower. And they're so easy to grow.
0:56
Once you've got them growing to a decent
0:58
size and the slugs can't get them, you
1:00
will get some great flowers on them. And
1:02
you get so many seeds from them as well.
1:05
So you can either save the seeds from
1:06
them to plant for the year after or you
1:09
can roast them or save them for the
1:11
birds as well. And there's so many
1:13
colors of sunflowers out there. There's
1:15
obviously the yellow ones, the orange
1:16
ones, the red ones, black ones. There's
1:18
no pink ones. So if you see pink ones
1:20
advertised, don't get them. They're like
1:22
a reddy blacky one. Um, make sure you
1:25
buy them from a reputable company as I
1:28
see so many online places selling fake
1:31
seeds that are not the variety and not
1:33
the color that they advertise them. So,
1:35
be careful when buying seeds and they
1:39
are absolutely great and obviously you
1:41
can use them for cut flower or you can
1:43
just use them for attracting the bees
1:45
down at the plot and I absolutely love
1:47
them. Last year's sunflower display down
1:49
at the plot was absolutely amazing.
1:51
Second one has to be the sweet pea.
1:53
Absolutely gorgeous. I didn't grow any
1:55
last year, but we're going to go full
1:56
slog and get some growing this year.
1:58
We've already sewn our seeds for this
2:00
year, and I'm looking forward to them.
2:02
And the best thing about sweet peas is
2:03
the more you cut the flowers, the more
2:05
they'll keep producing them, and you'll
2:07
be able to harvest them every couple of
2:09
days. And keep topping up your vasees
2:11
with sweet peas. And they smell gorgeous
2:13
as well. Absolutely a great addition to
2:15
any garden. And if you don't pick them,
2:18
they'll go to seed. So you can save the
2:20
seeds for next year. So usually towards
2:22
the end of the season, let some of the
2:23
flowers go to seed and then you'll get
2:26
some seeds for next year, saving you
2:27
money as well. Next up is geraniums.
2:31
Another great flower to grow from seed.
2:33
Now I did this the other year and they
2:35
were fantastic. Geraniums can be
2:37
expensive to buy, but they're so easy to
2:39
grow from seed. If you start them off
2:41
early enough around March time, you will
2:43
get some flowers on them this year. They
2:45
might not be big big big plants, but you
2:47
can dig the plants up at the end of the
2:49
year, put them in your greenhouse or
2:50
your poly tunnel, keep them alive, and
2:52
then plant them back out next year and
2:54
they'll be bigger and better as well.
2:56
So, you can actually save your geraniums
2:58
for the year after. So, give them a try
3:00
and let me know how you get on. Next up
3:02
is another easy flower, marolds. A great
3:05
addition and a great color to any
3:07
garden. And obviously, they're good for
3:08
tomato plants and good for keeping pests
3:11
away. So yeah, marolds are a great
3:14
addition to any garden. So easy to grow
3:16
and you can get some great flowers from
3:18
them. Next up is another one which is
3:21
similar to marold. It's called colundula
3:23
and that is a selfseeding flower. So be
3:27
careful where you plant them. If you
3:28
don't mind them popping up everywhere,
3:30
they will spread and they will produce
3:32
flowers year after year and they're
3:34
great. They'll die back at the end of
3:36
the year and flout spread the seeds and
3:39
you'll get more plants popping up here
3:40
and there and everywhere. But they are a
3:42
great addition and they're absolutely
3:44
gorgeous. A great color to any garden,
3:46
any border and yeah, I'm going to be
3:49
growing some of them this year for
3:50
definite. Next up are zenyas. Another
3:53
great flower for any garden. Lots of
3:55
lovely color and yeah, you can get some
3:57
great flowers from them. All these
3:59
flowers I'm going to be growing myself
4:01
and trying them down at the a lotment.
4:03
So, make sure you stay tuned for us
4:04
sewing all these this year. Next up, a
4:07
nice easy one for beginners is corn
4:09
flour. You can get them in blue, you can
4:11
get them in white, and I think you can
4:12
get them in purpley color as well. And
4:15
another great flower to add to the
4:17
garden, and they flower for ages. They
4:20
keep the color and absolutely gorgeous
4:22
to any garden.
4:26
Next one, they don't flower for long,
4:27
but they are a great flower and great
4:30
color. And these are the poppies. Now,
4:34
obviously, everybody sees the red poppy,
4:36
but there's many different varieties out
4:37
there. And I love growing the weird and
4:39
wonderful flowers and there's so many
4:41
different varieties out there. So, if
4:42
you're looking at poppies, have a look
4:44
at the different varieties and seeing
4:46
what variety you want to give a try. And
4:48
yeah, a great addition. And again, they
4:50
produce the seed heads, so you can save
4:52
the seeds for the year after and then
4:54
sew some more year after year and save
4:57
yourself some money in growing the
4:58
poppies. Another good one is Cosmos. An
5:01
easy one for a beginner gardener and you
5:05
can't go wrong with growing it and it
5:06
adds some great color to the garden. So,
5:09
we will be trying Cosmos this year and
5:11
hopefully adding some great color to the
5:13
plot. And last one is one that you can
5:15
eat, nersium. Now, I'm not one for
5:18
eating flowers, but you can actually eat
5:20
them. And they're great for the garden.
5:22
They spread, they add some great color,
5:25
and yeah, they attract the bees.
5:28
absolutely gorgeous and you will get
5:30
some great flowers and produce from them
5:32
if you are fancying eating them. I think
5:34
this taste is pepper. I think I tried
5:36
one once but I'm not one for trying
5:38
flowers to eat. But yeah, if you want to
5:40
give it a try, it'll add some great
5:42
color and fill a border as well. So that
5:45
is our top 10 flowers and we're going to
5:48
try and grow all them 10 flowers this
5:50
year down at plot. So make sure you drop
5:52
us a follow to stay up to date with us
5:53
growing them and seeing how well we get
5:55
on with them. Like I say, I always am
5:57
honest. If they grow, they grow. If they
5:59
don't, I'll show you. And yeah, I'll
6:01
show you the failures as well as the
6:03
success. So, until next time, everyone,
6:05
remember, keep smiling, keep shining,
6:07
and keep gardening. Everyone.
