This video explains how to collect and store tomato seeds so they remain viable for future planting. I cover selecting suitable fruit, fermenting and cleaning seeds, drying methods, and proper storage conditions. It is helpful for gardeners wanting to grow free plants and maintain reliable seed quality for the next season.

Save your tomato seeds. Welcome to
0:02
Gardening with Ben. We're going to talk
0:04
about saving our tomato seeds for next
0:07
year down here at the a lotment. As you
0:09
can see, our tomatoes have done
0:11
absolutely fantastic this year. We've
0:14
grown a beef steak one and we've grown
0:17
the million variety of tomatoes. Now,
0:20
the best thing to do about saving the
0:22
seeds is that because they've already
0:25
grown in the UK climate, these
0:28
varieties, and they've grown really
0:31
well, if you save the seeds and plant
0:33
them next year, you will get a great
0:35
crop from them because the seeds
0:38
remember the climate that they've grown
0:40
in this year, and they will thrive off
0:44
that climate next year, if you get me.
0:46
So obviously we've had a hot summer this
0:48
year, so hopefully it's hot next year,
0:51
but they will thrive a lot better than
0:54
sewing the seeds from the packets. And
0:57
if you save the seeds from the tomatoes,
0:59
you'll get absolutely hundreds of seeds
1:02
out of a tomato, saving you a lot of
1:05
money as well. My uncle always used to
1:08
save his tomato seeds every single year,
1:11
and he never bought any tomato seeds
1:14
ever. He just continued growing the same
1:16
seed year after year from the tomatoes
1:19
that he grew. And his tomatoes were
1:22
absolutely phenomenal. So if you wanting
1:25
to grow tomatoes next year, take off
1:27
some tomatoes, a couple of tomatoes, put
1:30
them take the seeds out, put them on
1:32
some kitchen roll, dry them out, and
1:35
store them in a brown envelope. Keep
1:38
them dry and stop them from going moldy
1:41
and save them ready for next year. Now,
1:43
I usually sew my tomato seeds around
1:46
March time. You can start them from
1:48
January, but they usually catch up as
1:50
well. So, I always start mine in March,
1:52
and I'm up north in Yorkshire. So,
1:57
save yourself some money, grow some
1:59
tomatoes, and save the seeds ready for
2:02
next year. And who knows how well your
2:05
tomatoes are going to be. And if you're
2:07
like me, I end up planting every tomato
2:10
seed that I grow. and I end up with
2:12
about 50 tomato plants. This year I've
2:14
been pretty good. I've only got six
2:15
tomato plants. But knowing my polyimal
2:19
will be full with about 50 tomato plants
2:21
next year because these beef steak ones
2:24
have been absolutely phenomenal. And the
2:27
million ones, the million ones have been
2:28
absolutely amazing. And they go off the
2:31
name of Million and they do produce
2:34
absolutely loads of tomatoes on them. So
2:37
yeah, let's get some off and let's get
2:38
some saved and we'll see if they grow
2:41
next year. So these are the tomatoes
2:44
that we're going to save for the seeds.
2:46
Obviously, we'll get millions out of
2:47
these beef steak ones, but like I said,
2:49
they've been absolutely amazing this
2:50
year. So I'm definitely going to grow
2:52
more of the beef steak next year. You
2:54
don't get as many tomatoes on the plant,
2:56
but I had a brilliant crop. So yeah,
2:59
we're going to take some seeds out and
3:00
we're going to grow quite a few beef
3:01
steak tomatoes next year. And we've got
3:03
the million ones as well. So hopefully
3:06
we get some decent million tomatoes next
3:08
year as well. These are so juicy and
3:10
sweet. So I highly recommend you growing
3:13
them. Make sure you drop us a follow to
3:15
stay up to date with all our videos and
3:17
then you'll see next year us sewing
3:19
these seeds down here at the aotment.
3:21
Until next time everyone, remember, keep
3:23
smiling, keep shining, and keep
3:25
gardening with Ben. Go.
