Let's plant our onions in cell trays.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And we
0:05
are currently in February. And what
0:07
we're going to do today, we're going to
0:09
start our onions off in cell trays just
0:12
to give them that little head start in
0:15
getting growing before we plant them
0:16
out. Usually you plant these straight
0:18
into the ground in March time, but
0:22
obviously then they need to start
0:23
growing and take root. And yeah, we're
0:27
going to give them a little head start
0:29
so that when it gets round to March,
0:31
they'll already be growing and we can
0:32
get them in the ground. Now, the thing
0:35
is we're planting onions straight in the
0:37
ground. Is that you can have issues with
0:40
birds pinching the tops off when the
0:42
shoots start popping through. They pull
0:44
them out and also mice and rats and
0:47
squirrels can come along and pinch them
0:49
as well. So, one of the reasons why
0:51
we're starting them off early is to
0:53
protect them from that because when we
0:54
put them out, they won't be too fussed
0:56
about them because they've already
0:58
started growing and hopefully get them
1:01
in the ground pretty good. So, yeah,
1:03
let's get some cell trays and let's get
1:08
Now, if you're anything like me, you
1:11
hoard seed trays what you get your
1:14
plants in. Now, my greenhouse is
1:16
absolutely full of them. I always save
1:17
them because it's good to recycle and
1:20
it's good to reuse. So these are perfect
1:23
for look at them just like individual
1:25
cells. So we can put an onion in each
1:28
one. So we need to get some compost in
1:30
it. Give it some water and then get the
1:32
onions in place. So we filled them with
1:35
compost. We've got 50 bulbs. So yeah,
1:37
we've filled 50 cells with compost.
1:39
Let's give them some water so that we
1:41
can put the onions straight into the
1:45
So, we're giving them a nice good soak.
1:47
So, it's a case of putting each onion in
1:49
each cell now. So, these are the
1:52
varieties that we're going to try
1:53
growing this year. We've already got
1:55
some onions in for the winter, which
1:57
will be ready around June time, but
1:59
yeah, we got a second crop. So,
2:02
hopefully we get some decent onions this
2:04
year. So, let's start off with the
2:09
So, it's going to be a case of just
2:10
getting an onion and pushing it into the
2:12
soil like that, just so that it settles
2:15
in. This one's even shooting already.
2:19
Look at that. So, yeah, nice and easy.
2:22
And then when you plant them, you can
2:24
just take the cell out and plant the
2:26
full cell with the roots on.
2:29
And there we have it. All of them in the
2:31
cells. And as you can see, we've got
2:33
some shoots coming on them already. So,
2:35
yeah, they will take root and they'll
2:37
start growing. Next up is obviously put
2:39
a label on them so you know what variety
2:41
they are. Not like I always forget, but
2:43
we've got plenty of labels this year.
2:45
So, we're going to label them up so I
2:46
remember which variety they are. So,
2:49
that's them all done and labeled up. So,
2:52
let's go on to the red onions and the
2:54
other white onions. And let's get them
2:57
So, there we have it. All of them done.
3:00
They're looking good.
3:03
now to put them somewhere nice and warm
3:05
so that they'll start sprouting. We're
3:07
going to keep them in this poly tunnel
3:09
in a mini greenhouse so that it's an
3:11
extra layer of protection and hopefully
3:13
that'll keep them warm and frost free
3:15
and hopefully get them sprouting
3:17
especially with this warmer weather
3:19
what's coming this. So that's them all
3:21
in the greenhouse nicely tucked away and
3:24
yeah, we'll probably water them every
3:26
couple of weeks. They won't need much
3:28
watering at the moment just to get them
3:30
to help start sprouting.
3:34
But yeah, I'm excited. Gardening season
3:40
So, if you've enjoyed today's video,
3:42
make sure you drop us a follow to stay
3:43
up to date with how well the onions get
3:45
on this year down here at the a lotment.
3:47
And hopefully, we'll get some great
3:48
harvests from them. So, until next time,
3:50
everyone, remember, keep smiling, keep
3:52
shining, and keep gardening with Ben,
