This video explains how to plant broad beans correctly and the simple steps that help them establish well. I cover soil preparation, spacing, sowing depth, and early care that supports healthy growth. It is helpful for gardeners wanting reliable crops and a clearer understanding of successful vegetable planting methods.

Let's plant our autumn broad beans.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And in
0:05
today's video, we're going to be
0:06
planting our autumn broad beans. Now,
0:09
the variety that you're meant to grow
0:11
through the autumn winter period are
0:13
aquadullus.
0:15
I can never say names right, so if I say
0:17
that wrong, forgive me. But these are
0:20
the variety that you need. You need a
0:21
winter hard variety. Ones that can
0:23
survive the cold, the snow, the frost,
0:26
everything like that. The thing is with
0:28
growing broad beans at this time of
0:29
year, they're ready to harvest a lot
0:31
earlier than the ones you grow from
0:33
March time into summer and they'll be
0:36
ready to harvest before the blackfly
0:38
appear. As you know, broad beans,
0:41
blackfly absolutely love them and swarm
0:44
all over them. So, if you hate the
0:45
blackfly, this is the perfect time to be
0:47
planting them. We're now in October at
0:49
the moment, so we're going to be getting
0:51
these in the ground. We've got the
0:52
ground ready and we're going to be
0:55
planting these straight into the ground.
0:57
Some people like to grow them in modules
0:59
first, get them nice and big, and then
1:01
plant them out because the only issue
1:02
around this time of year is that there's
1:04
not much food around for the squirrels,
1:06
the rodents, the birds. So, they'll tend
1:09
to destroy them if they're not
1:11
protected. So, we're going to net them
1:12
over as well to stop anything trying to
1:15
pinch them. Fingers crossed it works.
1:17
Probably still get in and get them, but
1:19
we'll give it a try and see how well we
1:22
get on. Well, we have about 50 seeds in
1:24
a packet. We've got two packets. So,
1:26
we're going to be planting 100 today.
1:28
Absolutely loads. That should keep me
1:30
going for a while. If they all grow,
1:33
that is. If they don't all get
1:34
destroyed. So, we're going to use a
1:36
cane. We're going to use a dber. And
1:38
we're going to plant these into the
1:40
ground. They don't require a lot of
1:42
spacing in between them. They uh should
1:44
be all right um to grow. And yeah, we'll
1:47
see how well they get on. If they're too
1:49
cramped together, we can always pinch
1:50
them out and just let the stronger ones
1:53
grow
1:54
and see how well they get on. So, let's
1:57
get these in the ground and let's get
1:59
these started to grow. So, this is where
2:02
I'm going to be growing them in the
2:03
ground. It's pretty weed-free. Uh we
2:06
weeded it the other day. We've got us
2:08
frames up for when they start to get
2:10
tall, but we've not got any netting up
2:11
at the moment. We don't need the netting
2:13
up on the frames. We'll just use the
2:15
netting to cover over the bed to stop
2:17
anything from getting pinched. So, we
2:19
need to get a cane so that we get them
2:21
planted in a straight line and get the
2:24
dber to get the holes to put them in.
2:27
So, we've put the holes in. We've got 25
2:29
in uh this row, which we probably got
2:33
too many packets. Well, probably one
2:35
packet have been enough. But yeah, let's
2:37
get them in. And if we've got a spare
2:38
packet, we'll do another bed another
2:40
week.
2:42
So, we've got all those in that row. We
2:44
just need to cover them over now with
2:46
the soil. And yeah, then do the other
2:50
row, the other side.
2:52
So, we've now got the other row in. So,
2:54
we just need to cover them ones over as
2:56
well. And once we've covered them over,
2:57
we'll give them a bit of water. And then
2:59
we'll put some netting over them to
3:00
protect them from the birds, the rats,
3:03
the squirrels, anything that just love
3:05
to eat all the shoots and beans that are
3:08
growing.
3:10
So, that is all done. They're all netted
3:12
over now to protect them from anything
3:15
coming on and trying to eat them.
3:17
Obviously mice can still probably try
3:19
and get in underneath the netting, but
3:21
we hopefully
3:24
stop a bit before getting in. But yeah,
3:26
we'll leave that on until they get
3:28
growing quite big before we remove the
3:29
netting. And we'll put up the netting
3:33
for them to climb up once they're big
3:35
enough and support them like that. So,
3:38
I'm excited to get growing these as I
3:40
don't grow much throughout the winter
3:41
period. I only grow my onions and my
3:43
garlic and the broad beans throughout
3:45
the autumn winter period. I don't grow
3:48
absolutely loads. Maybe that'll change.
3:50
Maybe I might start growing stuff in the
3:52
poly tunnel throughout the winter, but
3:53
we'll see. This year, we're just
3:55
concentrating on the onions, the broad
3:57
beans, and the garlic for this year. So,
4:00
make sure you do check out all my other
4:02
videos of what I've been posting and
4:04
what we're growing throughout the autumn
4:06
winter period. Give us a follow to stay
4:08
up to date with how well things are
4:09
growing and how things are getting on
4:11
throughout this winter period. Until
4:13
next time everyone, remember, keep
4:15
smiling, keep shining, and keep
4:16
gardening with your bed, everyone.
