March a lotment roundup. Welcome to
0:02
Gardening with Ben. And today is our
0:04
March Aotment Roundup where we talk
0:06
about all the things that we have done
0:08
this month. Whether it's success or
0:10
whether it's failures, we talk about it
0:12
and share with you how we're getting on
0:15
down here. Now, March has been an
0:18
exciting month. Absolutely amazing. A
0:21
busy month, but we have got so much done
0:23
down here at the aotment. We've got
0:26
everything growing in our raised beds
0:28
down here in the poly tunnel and things
0:30
are growing absolutely fantastic. As you
0:33
can see, a sneaky little peek rather
0:35
than our a lotment weekly tour. You can
0:37
have a little sneaky peek. Things are
0:39
growing fantastic and I'm so happy with
0:43
the investment that I've done in this
0:44
poly tunnel and how things are growing.
0:47
It should pay off and hopefully we'll
0:49
get some great produce down here in the
0:51
poly tunnel where it's absolutely
0:53
boiling today. It's like 30° in here and
0:56
we're still in March. It's absolutely
0:58
gorgeous. We're having to obviously keep
0:59
things watered, but it's growing pretty
1:02
good and hopefully we'll get some
1:04
amazing harvests from it. Now,
1:07
obviously, we have also sewn loads of
1:10
seeds this month because March is a good
1:12
time for sewing seeds, but we'll still
1:15
be waiting for a few to sew in April
1:18
like our runna beans, our French beans,
1:23
But yeah, there's certain things that
1:24
you have to start in April. So, we'll be
1:26
starting a lot of those off and getting
1:28
those growing. We've also planted out
1:31
all our onion sets for this summer and
1:34
they are all looking healthy. We started
1:36
them off in the cell trays if you
1:38
remember to give them that extra kick
1:40
start and get them growing and they look
1:42
better than what the ones that I planted
1:43
in winter. So, they'll probably produce
1:45
better onions on them. Fingers crossed.
1:48
So, hopefully we get some decent ones
1:50
from them. We're also getting ready for
1:53
chasing our potatoes on Good Friday.
1:56
That's when a lot of gardeners do it
1:58
because it's to do with the moon and
2:00
that's what I've always stuck with. So
2:01
yeah, I'll be so planting all mine on
2:04
Good Friday. We've also been planting a
2:07
load of plants what we've been getting
2:09
given. We've planted some hostas. We've
2:11
planted some gladiolias. We've planted a
2:14
hydrena. Incredible. And yeah, we've
2:18
been planting absolutely loads of stuff
2:20
down here. And we've still got loads of
2:22
stuff to get in and get growing. The
2:24
strawberries, they're doing absolutely
2:26
fantastic. I was taking the flowers off
2:28
for the first couple of weeks as they
2:29
were producing them, but now I'm going
2:31
to let them flower and start fruiting.
2:33
So hopefully we'll be getting produce on
2:35
them soon. Obviously, it'll be earlier
2:37
because we're in the poly tunnel and
2:38
it's a lot warmer in here. We've set up
2:40
the drip irrigation system where it
2:42
waters them for 15 minutes every single
2:45
day. Like I said, it gets warm and they
2:47
dry out pretty fast. We haven't been in
2:49
hanging baskets and in the warmth. So
2:51
yeah, that is working fantastic. I set
2:54
that up last week and I'd not been down
2:56
to the a lotment for 4 days and they're
2:58
wet. So that is what we want. We don't
3:00
want them soaking wet. We just want them
3:02
damp so that they're getting the water
3:04
that they need. Obviously when it starts
3:06
to get hot and towards summer, we'll
3:08
either put it on twice a day or put them
3:09
on for longer to give them a better
3:11
watering. So that is working perfectly.
3:13
So, if you got an a lotment like me and
3:15
you can't get down every single day, a
3:17
solar powered drip irrigation system is
3:20
the key to it. And we'll be setting one
3:22
of those up for tomato plants and his
3:24
cucumber plants when we get growing them
3:26
in here as well. So, yeah, we have done
3:29
absolutely loads and like I said,
3:31
there's still a lot to do in April. We
3:33
won't be planting outside until it gets
3:35
past the chance of frost. The only
3:37
things that you can plant outside are
3:39
the onions and the potatoes. And
3:42
remember to heat them up as the shoots
3:44
pop through to encourage more potatoes
3:46
and to protect them from the frost as
3:49
frost can damage the potato plants. So
3:53
yeah, we have got lots and lots to do.
3:56
We're getting on top of things. I'm
3:57
happy with how things are coming along.
3:59
All the posts are doing well on social
4:01
media. So thank you for all the support
4:03
as usual, the comments, the likes. If I
4:05
don't always get to the comments, I will
4:07
do eventually. And I do see most of them
4:09
as well. So until next time everyone,
4:12
remember, keep smiling, keep shining,
4:14
and keep gardening with Ben everyone.
4:16
And hopefully a fantastic April to come.
4:19
Until next time everyone.
