it worth taking on an overgrown a
0:02
lotment Welcome to Gardening with Ben
0:05
and we're continuing with our series of
0:08
little videos talking about taking on an
0:10
aotment and getting started with growing
0:13
your own vegetables and the exciting
0:16
time of starting We've talked previously
0:19
about how to apply to an aotment and
0:22
what state you often find your a lotment
0:24
in And today we're going to talk about
0:27
is it worthwhile taking on an overgrown
0:30
aotment Well the answer is yes It may
0:34
look absolutely daunting when you see
0:37
weeds to your shoulder length but it can
0:41
be exciting as well because sometimes
0:45
you're growing on an aotment from the
0:49
previous tenant they've sometimes left
0:51
some treasure behind hidden underneath
0:53
all the weeds So the best thing to do
0:55
first is go around and have a look see
0:58
if there's any fruit bushes hidden
1:00
within the weeds and have a look and try
1:02
and work out what's what But the only
1:06
issue is that there could be a lot of
1:08
rubbish and glass on there So make sure
1:11
you're careful when you're wandering
1:12
around and be careful of what's on there
1:17
So when you've obviously got an
1:18
overgrown a lotment it's good to start
1:21
from scratch and design it to how you
1:24
want it to be because if you take on a
1:27
normal a lotment people sometimes have
1:29
got layouts set out and it's not always
1:31
what you want it to be So you spend more
1:34
time taking it all out and rebuilding it
1:36
to how you want it to be But if you've
1:38
got an overgrown plot you can design it
1:40
to how you want it to be And obviously
1:43
the first thing would be to do is to
1:45
trim it all down And once you've trimmed
1:47
it all down then you can work out where
1:50
things are going to grow And what I
1:53
usually do is I usually draw a plan of
1:56
how I want my a lotment to look Whether
1:58
it be this year or whether it be years
2:01
into the future how your ideal a lotment
2:04
would look And there's c lots and lots
2:06
of tools out there to help you nowadays
2:08
Obviously there's AI and everything like
2:11
that what can help you design an aotment
2:13
And obviously you'll need to look around
2:15
for like shady areas and what gets full
2:18
sun to where you want to grow your
2:21
produce So it's exciting taking on an
2:24
overgrown plot And the best thing to do
2:27
as well is take a photo at the beginning
2:30
and the progress that you're making
2:31
because then you can record how well
2:33
you're getting on and share it with
2:35
other people and people will encourage
2:37
you There's a good gardening community
2:40
out there that people get involved in
2:42
and they'll cheer you on There's a few
2:45
negative people telling you how things
2:47
should be done but just ignore them and
2:49
do what you want to do when you want to
2:51
do your gardening And it's all exciting
2:54
stuff and you can see the progress that
2:56
can be made And I wish I'd taken photos
2:59
of my a lotment when I first got mine
3:01
because mine was an absolute state had
3:03
it 20 years now and it's looking in good
3:07
shape A lot of bindw weed and everything
3:09
like that but we're living we live with
3:11
that So yeah taking on an overgrown plot
3:14
can be challenging And is it worth it
3:17
Yes it certainly is I'd say so And I'd
3:21
recommend anyone doing it I've seen
3:23
other people on the a lotment site
3:24
taking on overgrown plots and they look
3:26
absolutely fantastic now So definitely
3:30
take one on if you can get one
3:33
and enjoy it and do it in small bits and
3:37
don't rush yourself and track the
3:40
progress that you're making So I hope
3:43
you've enjoyed that little video today
3:44
