Let's sew our peas. Welcome to Gardening
0:02
with Ben. Today, we're going to be
0:04
sewing our peas. These are an early
0:06
variety of peas. Now, I didn't grow any
0:08
peas last year, which is a real shame
0:10
because I love peas. And the year
0:11
before, we had so many. And it were just
0:14
nice just to come down and pick them and
0:16
eat them as they were ready. And yeah,
0:19
they were great crops. So, we're not
0:21
going to make that mistake last year.
0:22
And we're going to grow lots again this
0:24
year down at the plot. So, I'm going to
0:26
sew all these and then we'll plant these
0:28
out possibly in May time when it gets a
0:32
bit warmer and the chance of frost has
0:34
passed. So, we're going to get these
0:36
started, going to get them germinated
0:38
and hopefully get them growing. So,
0:40
we're going to show you our little trick
0:41
for getting them germinating a lot
0:44
faster and yeah, this is a little tip
0:47
you can take away with you. So, I've put
0:49
them all into a bowl and what we're
0:51
going to do, we're going to soak them
0:52
for 24 hours. That'll soften the shell
0:54
and speed up the germination rate of
0:57
them. And then we'll sew them all
1:01
cells so that they can start
1:02
germinating. Fingers crossed if the
1:04
weather warms up. But yeah, let's get
1:06
them covered with water. So that's them
1:09
covered with water. So we'll leave them
1:10
to soak for 24 hours and then we'll come
1:13
back tomorrow and we'll sew them all.
1:15
There's certainly plenty of peas there.
1:17
You can never have enough peas. And I'll
1:19
be sewing these on a regular basis so
1:22
that we're getting crops every so often
1:24
down at the plot all summer long.
1:27
So the peas are have been soaking for 24
1:31
hours now. So yeah, we're going to sew
1:34
these and get them growing. We're going
1:35
to sew these in our Westland grocery
1:40
cell trays. And yeah, they're pretty
1:43
deep and pretty good and sturdy.
1:45
Obviously recycled. They were once a
1:46
plastic bottle, which is even better.
1:49
So, yeah, we're going to get some
1:50
compost in these and then get these
1:52
planted in the cell trays. The reason
1:54
why I grow them in the cell trays and
1:56
not straight in the ground is because I
1:58
have issues with mice and rats and
1:59
squirrels and they'll pinch them and eat
2:02
them themselves because there's not much
2:03
food around for them at the moment. So,
2:05
we're starting them off in the poly
2:06
tunnel and getting them growing in
2:08
there. So, we've sewn all them. We've
2:10
put four in each cell tray. So, we need
2:12
to cover them with compost now and give
2:15
them a good water to hopefully get them
2:17
germinating and growing.
2:20
So, they're in the mini greenhouse and
2:22
yeah, they'll stay nice and warm in
2:24
here. At the moment in the poly tunnel,
2:28
So, yeah, they'll be a couple of degrees
2:30
warmer in there and it's going to warm
2:31
up a bit this week. So, we'll see how
2:33
fast they germinate and hopefully get
2:35
some peas growing. So, make sure you hit
2:38
that follow button to stay up to date
2:39
with all our videos and how well we get
2:41
on with the peas this year. Also, we do
2:44
regular videos of what's growing in the
2:46
poly tunnel to stay up to date with it.
2:47
So, yeah, make sure you stay up to date.
2:50
So, until next time, everyone, remember,
2:52
keep smiling, keep sharing, and keep
2:54
gardening with Ben, everyone.
