How to protect your a lotment when it's
0:02
stormy. Welcome to Gardening with Ben.
0:06
Today we're going to talk about how you
0:07
can protect your a lotment when it's
0:09
stormy. And yes, we have got a storm at
0:11
the moment. We've got storm Amy at the
0:14
moment and it battered us yesterday. But
0:17
thankfully, my a lotment stood strong
0:19
and survived it and we didn't get any
0:22
damage down here at the plot. Now, as
0:25
the winter approaches, we'll be getting
0:27
more and more storms approaching. And I
0:30
tend to try and stop anything from
0:33
getting damaged as much down here at the
0:35
plot as possible because obviously we
0:38
don't want damage and we don't want have
0:40
to replace anything. Now, this poly
0:42
tunnel that I'm in has been up about 16
0:46
years now. That is longer than an
0:49
expected poly tunnel. Yes, you can see
0:52
tape all along it. And one of these days
0:55
it will go. And every day there's been a
0:59
storm, I always put my fingers crossed
1:01
and hope that we've not had no damage
1:03
and it's still standing. Um, when it
1:06
eventually goes, it eventually goes. But
1:08
we have had as money's worth from this
1:10
poly tunnel. Now, one way to protect
1:13
your poly tunnels during the storms is
1:16
do what I do. And I often look around my
1:19
poly tunnel for any splits. Usually
1:22
they're along the creases where they
1:24
start to split and get it taped up as
1:27
fast as possible. Now I've just used
1:29
normal black tape. What doesn't stick
1:31
very well. It it'll last for a few
1:33
months, but then I have to replace it
1:35
again. But online, you can buy special
1:38
poly tunnel tape which sticks really
1:40
well and it will is waterproof and it'll
1:42
hold it well and protect it. The slight
1:46
little
1:47
rip in it. You need to get it taped up
1:49
as fast as possible because when the
1:52
wind's like this, it only needs a bit of
1:53
wind and it will tear it straight away.
1:56
So, make sure you get on to fastening
1:59
any poly tunnels up if you do see any
2:01
splits in it straight away because like
2:04
poly tunnel skins are expensive now. Uh,
2:06
a lot more money than probably what I
2:08
paid for it in the time. So, you don't
2:10
want to have to replace it and pay out
2:13
that money. So make sure your poly
2:16
tunnel is well prepared.
2:18
And also another thing to do is a lot of
2:21
people have obviously these green houses
2:25
what are freestanding with the plastic
2:27
covers on with the shelves in which are
2:30
brilliant but in this weather they are
2:33
awful because they soon blow away and
2:36
you can end up losing all your plants in
2:39
it if you've got plants in it. And yeah,
2:41
they can fly off everywhere. And you
2:43
don't want to lose all your little
2:44
plants in it, what you started growing
2:46
throughout the winter period or your
2:49
perennials that you might be growing
2:50
ready for next year. And yeah, you don't
2:53
want to lose them. So, make sure that
2:55
it's at the side of like a shed or a
2:57
wall and screw it to the wall to the
3:00
fence. Even put rope around it so it
3:04
won't budge during these winter months.
3:08
Yes, it might be a hassle taking it off,
3:10
but even like using bungee ropes,
3:12
they're brilliant. You can just unhook
3:15
it and get into the greenhouse when
3:18
possible. So, make sure that is well
3:21
fastened down because we don't want to
3:22
lose them. And yeah, they're not that
3:25
expensive to replace, but you don't want
3:27
to lose all the plants that you may
3:29
possibly be growing in that. Next one is
3:32
your green houses. Now, green houses.
3:35
Yes, I see online so many times green
3:38
houses with glass smashed, losing green
3:42
houses and collapsing, everything like
3:44
that. Make sure obviously they are well
3:47
fastened down, secured,
3:49
fastened to the base because you don't
3:51
want them to blow off. Also go around
3:55
and check that it has enough clips in
3:58
the glass. And
4:01
even if you've got loads of clips in it
4:03
to keep that glass fastened in because
4:05
you don't want to lose them glass
4:06
because if you lose a couple of sheets
4:08
out of it and they smash, it's so hard
4:10
getting rid of all the glass on the a
4:12
lotment and it just shatters everywhere.
4:15
It's awful. I used to have a greenhouse,
4:17
one of the worst things that I had. Now
4:19
I replaced it with a polycarbonate shed
4:21
which is absolutely brilliant. So yeah,
4:24
if you got a glass greenhouse, make sure
4:26
it's got plenty of clips in it.
4:28
If you've got a polycarbonate one, most
4:32
often than not, my dad's got one of
4:34
these and his plastic panels used to
4:36
blow out all over the place on there a
4:37
lot, but we have to keep finding them
4:39
and getting them back in and fastening
4:41
it up again. And but yeah, the wind
4:44
easily blows them out. What he's done,
4:47
he's put wooden strips behind each
4:49
plastic panel and screwed the
4:52
polycarbonate into the wood. So then
4:54
none of them will blow out ever. and
4:57
that has lasted him years. It's been an
4:59
absolutely fantastic idea what he did
5:02
and he's not lost any of the pieces in
5:04
there. So, make sure you protect your
5:07
structures and keep them secure. We
5:10
don't want to lose them. Yes, it may
5:12
cost you a bit of money to invest in
5:14
protecting them, but in the long run, it
5:17
will be worth it overall. So, I hope you
5:20
found them tips useful. Make sure you do
