Let's plant our elephant garlic. Welcome
0:02
to Gardening with Ben. And in today's
0:05
video, we're going to be planting our
0:06
elephant garlic. We're now in October
0:09
and now is the perfect time to be
0:11
planting your garlic. However, elephant
0:13
garlic is not actually part of the
0:16
garlic family. It's part of the leak
0:18
family. So, yeah, it's weird that it's
0:21
called garlic, but it's not actually
0:23
part of the garlic family. Now, these
0:25
can grow to an absolutely huge size.
0:28
Now, these aren't a full bulb, these
0:30
elephant garlic. These are like half,
0:32
but they're absolutely massive, and
0:35
hopefully we get quite a few cloves off
0:37
these to plant. Now, we're going to be
0:40
spacing these out quite well. Uh it says
0:43
plant 30 cm apart. So, yes, they do need
0:46
a lot of space and you need to plant
0:49
them to a depth of 15 cm. So, quite deep
0:53
as well. So, yeah, we're going to be
0:54
getting these in the ground. We've dug
0:56
it over. We've cleared it. We're going
0:57
to be planting it in the same bed as our
0:59
garlic. We're going to be feeding them
1:01
throughout the winter period and into
1:03
the springtime because when they get the
1:04
leaves, that's what they need to help
1:06
them swell up in the springtime. And
1:08
then we'll feed them with tomato feed
1:10
come springtime to help fatten them up.
1:13
So during the winter time, we'll feed
1:15
them with onion and garlic feed, which
1:16
you can get from most garden centers and
1:20
online, which yeah, it'll help speed it
1:23
up and hopefully get some great produce.
1:25
So, we need to split all these up into
1:27
individual cloves and get these planted
1:30
in the ground. So, yeah, let's do that.
1:33
So, I've observed these. These
1:38
are not individual clothes. As you can
1:40
see, they're just one round. They've not
1:43
split into individual clothes. So, what
1:45
we need to do is just plant these
1:47
separately in the garden. And these will
1:50
then form the bulb and split up into
1:56
cloves. So yeah, we've got to plant
1:59
these individually in the garden. So I
2:02
I'm expecting to plant these
2:03
individually in separate clothes, but
2:05
no, I don't need as much space for
2:07
these. So we need to plant these at a 15
2:13
So we shove them right into the ground.
2:15
So we're going to cover them over to let
2:17
them grow. Make sure there's no weeds
2:19
around cuz they don't like fighting with
2:23
So yeah, that is that job done. I need
2:26
to get all these out, but that's a job
2:27
for another day. So yeah, hopefully
2:31
they'll grow. The last thing to do is
2:33
I'm going to feed them, put some food on
2:35
them, and hopefully we're going to net
2:37
them as well to stop the birds from
2:39
pulling out the shoots once they start
2:41
growing along with the normal garlic as
2:44
well. So yeah, let's get them fed and
2:48
So I've got the elephant garlic in the
2:50
ground. We've got it netted over. We've
2:52
put some feed over the top, the onion
2:54
and garlic feed, so that it'll help with
2:56
the nitrogen in the soil. But once they
2:58
take established and they get growing,
3:00
then we'll take the netting off during
3:02
the winter months when it's snowing so
3:04
that we can keep the netting and
3:06
hopefully use it again on something else
3:09
next year. So yeah, fingers crossed we
3:12
get some great elephant garlic and see
3:14
how big it actually grows. So make sure
3:17
you drop us a follow and stay up to date
3:19
and see how well it grows throughout the
3:21
year and how well we harvest it next
3:23
year. See if we get some huge elephant
3:26
garlic bulbs. So until next time
3:28
everyone, remember, keep smiling, keep
3:30
shining, and keep gardening. from the
