Let's pinch out our sweet peas. Welcome
0:02
to Gardening with Ben. And today we're
0:04
going to be pinching out the sweet peas.
0:06
Now, this is one thing that you don't
0:08
necessarily have to do, but we've grown
0:11
these in the root trainers that we got
0:12
from Oakland's gardens. And yeah, the
0:16
reason why we pinch them out is to help
0:18
them bush out. If you don't let them
0:21
bush out, sometimes they get bigger
0:23
flowers on, but if you let them bush
0:24
out, they get more flowers on them and
0:26
they send out side shoots so that we get
0:29
more flowers coming from them. So
0:31
fingers crossed we get some great blooms
0:34
on these. So I'm going to show you how
0:36
to pinch them out. Like I said, it's not
0:38
necessary, but we want to make them more
0:40
bushier and to get more flowers on them
0:42
and hopefully a better harvest from them
0:44
for our vases because sweet peas smell
0:47
absolutely gorgeous. The more you pick
0:49
the sweet peas, the more they will
0:50
produce. If you leave the sweet peas on,
0:53
they will go to seed and it'll slow down
0:55
harvesting and flowers on them. So, you
0:57
got to keep picking them when them
0:58
flowers appear on the sweet pea plants
1:01
and put them in your vases and give them
1:02
to your friends and family. So, let's
1:04
get these pinched out and let's get them
1:08
So, to do this, all we've got is a pair
1:10
of scissors. Obviously, if you've got
1:12
nails, you can do it yourself, but all
1:14
we're going to do is just snip off the
1:16
top of the sweet pea plant so that it
1:20
stops growing tallwards and starts
1:21
bushing out and sending side shoots out.
1:24
So, yeah, it's pretty easy job. Not too
1:27
hard. But yeah, we just take the tops
1:29
off them just like that. So, let's get
1:34
So, we have pinched all them ones out.
1:37
Oh, I missed one. Let's do that. Let's
1:39
just pinch top off. There we are. So,
1:42
yeah, we have done all them. So, like I
1:44
said, we've only taken a tiny bit off
1:46
the top of them. Uh, just down to where
1:48
the leaf joints are. So, this should
1:51
help them bush out and hopefully produce
1:54
more and more flowers on them. We're not
1:56
going to be planting those out probably
1:58
for about another month. We're going to
1:59
wait until it gets a bit warmer as I
2:02
don't want to risk losing them. They can
2:04
be pretty hardy, but we want to not risk
2:07
it. We don't want to lose them to any
2:09
elements of cold weather. Being up
2:10
north, it's still getting cold and we're
2:13
still getting frost sometimes in the
2:15
morning. So, I want to play safe. And
2:17
we're going to grow these in our new big
2:19
planters that we've got what have got
2:21
the extensions on the top so that they
2:24
get nice and good support and get
2:26
growing up them. Obviously, if you are
2:28
growing sweet peas, they need netting or
2:29
something or trellis to grow up so that
2:32
they can cling on and support themselves
2:34
as they get growing. So, that is
2:36
basically how you pinch out sweet peas.
2:40
So, I hope you found this useful and
2:42
that it's been good advice for you. A
2:44
lot of people have been asking for this
2:45
video and I finally done it for you now
2:47
that they've got to a decent size. So,
2:49
we're going to keep these watered. We're
2:50
going to keep them in the poly tunnel
2:52
and hopefully they'll start sending out
2:54
the side shoots to get them growing
2:56
better. So, I hope you found that video
2:58
useful and that it's worth it. Make sure
3:01
you share it and save it and use it to
3:04
your own help to get those sweet peas
3:08
pinched out. So until next time everyone
3:10
remember keep smiling, keep shining and
3:13
keep gardening with bed everyone.
