Do you grow Loganberries? Welcome to
0:03
Gardening with Ben, and today we're
0:05
going to talk about Loganberry plants.
0:06
Now, we've got some Loganberries growing
0:09
up behind us down here at the plot. Now,
0:12
Loganberries are a fantastic fruit to
0:15
grow. If you've never heard of them or
0:17
taste them, here are some facts about
0:20
Loganberries because they're so easy to
0:22
grow. They're a hybrid plant, which
0:26
means they're a cross between plants.
0:28
And they're a cross actually between
0:30
raspberries and blackberries. So they're
0:32
a bit of both in one fruit. And they
0:35
were accidentally created in the 1800s.
0:39
Um a chap called James Harvey Logan was
0:43
actually trying to create some new
0:45
berries and they actually formed
0:47
naturally. So that is how the Logan
0:50
berries were formed and they are a
0:53
longer than a raspberries. They're quite
0:56
about that long once you get growing the
0:58
fruit. They're absolutely delicious.
1:00
They're a bit hairy, but they're nice
1:02
and delicious and they're usually a dark
1:05
red purple color and they crop so much.
1:10
They get so much crops on them. Now,
1:12
they're definitely worth the wait in
1:14
gold. If you haven't tried growing one,
1:16
definitely give them a go. Now, mine is
1:19
a fless variety, which is absolutely
1:21
perfect. so you don't get spiked to
1:23
death when you are harvesting them
1:26
because I don't want spiky plants down
1:28
here. I've even got a formless
1:29
blackberry because I don't want the
1:31
thorns on my a lotment because you only
1:34
end up spending all the time pulling all
1:36
the thorns out. Now Logan berries are
1:40
perfect for jams, crumbles, juices,
1:43
anything like what you'd use your
1:45
raspberries and blackberries in.
1:46
Absolutely perfect and little large
1:48
crops as well. and also they're easy to
1:52
take cutings from them. Now, let me show
1:54
you the plant and let me show you about
1:56
the logo plant.
1:59
Now, the plant grows like a blackberry.
2:01
It's got the long whips on it, which you
2:04
can train up arches or along fences. And
2:07
as you can see, mine's starting to come
2:08
out in bud now that it's in March time.
2:11
So, it'll get growing again. And it
2:14
grows new for uh whips every year. and
2:17
they will be the ones that fing.
2:19
Obviously, the old ones are the ones
2:21
which you cut back for
2:25
the crop. So, as you can see, we've got
2:27
absolutely loads growing on this one.
2:29
It's absolutely amazing. Like, there's
2:31
only like three shoots coming from the
2:34
base, but we've got absolutely loads on
2:36
them. And there'll be crops all over the
2:38
Logan Bay. Now the best way to take
2:40
cutings is finding the end of the whip
2:44
and basically you put that in soil while
2:48
it's still attached to the mother plant
2:50
and it will start getting roots on the
2:52
end of it. So then once it's got roots
2:54
on it then you can snip it off and
2:56
there's your extra plant. It's as easy
2:59
as that to take cutings from
3:00
loanberries. So if you know somebody
3:02
that's got one ask them to take some
3:04
cutings for you and get the plant
3:06
started. save you going out and buying
3:08
some. But yeah, Loganberries are
3:11
absolutely fantastic. And come
3:14
summertime, we will show you the crops,
3:16
what we get from it. And if you saw my
3:18
videos last year, you'll see that we did
3:20
get some great crops from it. And it had
3:22
only been in a couple of years. So this
3:24
year, it will hopefully get an
3:27
absolutely amazing crop because it's
3:29
going all the way up here, absolutely
3:31
far along. So it's getting a good size
3:34
on it.
3:35
So yeah, that is the Logan Bay plant. So
3:38
let me know in the comments if you've
3:40
got a Logan Bay pl at your a lotment or
3:42
in the garden and if it's encouraged you
3:45
to go out and get one. So until next
3:47
time everyone remember keep smiling,
3:49
keep shining and keep gardening with Ben
3:51
everyone.
