1:22

1:26

1:29
listened to Saturdays there's new
1:32
podcasts coming every day for the next
1:34
few days so make sure you click that
1:37
follow button click that subscribe
1:39
button and you will get notified when
1:42
new podcasts come up so these podcasts
1:45
are going to be recorded on a regular
1:48
basis now and as you all have noticed
1:50
we've had quite a few this year and
1:52
certainly more than we had last year so
1:55
they're back in full swing everybody's
1:56
enjoying them the comments are been
1:58
getting from people the message
2:00
everybody is happy that the gardening
2:02
podcasts are back and there's certainly
2:04
a lot of you listening to them uh it's
2:07
so amazing to seeing how many people
2:08
listen to them uh the stats are
2:11
phenomenal but thank you all for tuning
2:14
back into these gardening podcasts and
2:15
I'm glad we've got them all back up and
2:17
running again there's plenty of podcast
2:20
episodes on my playlist so make sure you
2:23
have a listen to a all uh over 200 going
2:26
into 300 soon but yeah there's plenty of
2:30
podcast on there for you to listen to so
2:32
if you're feeling bored have a listen
2:35
and it all helps towards my allotment
2:39
Journey so in today's podcast we're
2:41
going to talk
2:42
about
2:44
seeds trying new things and making those
2:48
seed lists for this year because it is
2:50
getting to the time when we need to
2:52
think about what we're going to be
2:53
growing this year down in our allotments
2:56
and
2:57
Gardens so what I tend to do when I'm
3:00
making my seed lists and planning for
3:03
the year ahead we are talking a lot
3:05
about planning over these podcasts
3:07
because it is time to do all the
3:09
planning ready for this year so it is a
3:12
big subject to talk about and rather
3:14
than putting a massive episode and
3:15
putting them all into separate episodes
3:17
for you to listen to each
3:20
day so what I usually do when I make my
3:24
seed list is I'll write down all the
3:27
seeds which I'm definitely going to grow
3:30
uh which are my general ones which are
3:32
usually sweet corn
3:35
corett pumpkins beeto
3:39
lettuce
3:42
um cabbages cauliflowers so yeah and
3:46
Runa beans and peas all the general
3:48
normal ones which you will tend to grow
3:51
every year down at the plot and whether
3:54
it's to do
3:56
with using the same varieties that you
3:59
used to to that have grown well in the
4:01
past or whether it's trying new
4:03
varieties what have come out and a lot
4:07
of the time when you're buying your
4:09
seeds if you're looking in places like
4:13
Wilkers well it's not well Wilkers is
4:15
just starting to come back but it's
4:17
wilker seat to now in the range if
4:19
you've not noticed that so if you've got
4:22
a range near you they've got wco seeds
4:24
in or places like BQ or garden
4:27
centers they'll tend to just have have
4:30
the general seeds which everybody knows
4:33
about they don't tend to have the weird
4:35
and the wonderful ones which nobody's
4:38
ever
4:39
tried and are sometimes the nicer ones
4:42
to grow to be
4:44
honest so sometimes when you're wanting
4:46
to try out these weird and wonderful
4:48
varieties the best way of looking for
4:52
them is sometimes in on gardening
4:57
websites you'll find different varieties
4:59
and different fit plants to try to grow
5:03
down at your alotment or in the garden
5:05
or another way is ordering a Seed
5:08
Catalog and from like well-known brands
5:12
of seeds and often they'll have sections
5:15
where there's new varieties to try
5:19
or varieties which you've never even
5:22
heard of or vegetables you've never even
5:25
heard of um that is the best way to try
5:29
and find new stuff to grow down at the
5:32
alotment and trying these weird and
5:34
wonderful varieties is a sometimes a lot
5:37
better to be honest because I I've used
5:40
this tip uh comment many of times is
5:45
that I want tried growing purple
5:47
cauliflower down at my allotment because
5:50
I tried white cauliflower and I never
5:52
got good results so I thought I'm going
5:54
to try purple cauliflower uh i' got a
5:56
packet of seeds given to me so I gave
5:59
him them a try and they were the best
6:02
cauliflowers that I've ever grown in my
6:05
life down at my alment so since then
6:08
I've stuck to growing purple
6:10
cauliflowers and the results of them
6:12
were absolutely fantastic and I'll never
6:15
go back to Growing white ones now I'll
6:16
just stick to the purple variety and
6:20
maybe I'll try growing the purple
6:22
brussel sprouts because they may taste a
6:23
lot nicer than the green
6:25
ones but we never know but yeah that is
6:29
a 10 to think one thing that I tend to
6:32
try and do uh when doing allotments is
6:36
trying new stuff every year down at the
6:39
plot I like to try something different
6:42
each year down at the
6:44
plot whether it be new varieties of
6:48
squash or different varieties of squash
6:50
different types of beans different
6:53
colored beetroots different colored
6:55
radishes it's always good to try new
6:58
stuff and that's what I've done over the
7:00
past few years like last year I grew
7:04
different varieties of squash which were
7:06
fun interesting trying loads of
7:09
different types of squash like your
7:10
butternut squash your turkey squash your
7:13
pumpkins your
7:16
um yeah everything all different types
7:19
and varieties and then one year I tried
7:21
different types of beans I got yellow
7:23
beans I've got purple beans I've got
7:25
black beans uh I've got the normal green
7:28
beans and and it will good to try all
7:30
different varieties so what different
7:34
thing are you going to try and grow at
7:36
your plot this year if you've got an
7:38
idea of growing something different that
7:40
you've never tried before let me know
7:42
send me a message it's always good to
7:44
hear what people are wanting to try and
7:47
grow down at
7:48
developments so it's good ways of trying
7:51
different things and another way that I
7:55
try new things is that I have gardening
7:58
magazines and I have the kitchen Garden
8:01
Magazine and the grow your own magazine
8:04
and in those grow magazines you usually
8:06
get 10 packets of seeds in each magazine
8:09
so imagine getting those magazines 12
8:12
times a year that's 120 packets in one
8:15
magazine over so it's like 240 packets
8:18
of seeds in a year and there'll be
8:21
plenty of stuff in them seed packets
8:24
that you would never go into the shop
8:26
and purchase that packet of seeds
8:28
because you'd think I'm not spending
8:30
that money on them seeds when I don't
8:31
need them and obviously you do get them
8:33
with the
8:34
magazines so it's a good way of trying
8:37
new stuff and in these magazines there
8:40
are some unusual stuff that come with
8:42
them some stuff that you would never
8:44
actually try and taste or try and grow
8:47
but usually what I do with these seeds
8:49
is that I try them I just sew them I
8:52
have nothing to lose obviously I've paid
8:54
for the magazine and it's paid for the
8:56
seats so I might as well just sprinkle
8:59
them into some compost see if they come
9:01
plant them out and fill up a gap on the
9:03
allotment Garden you're not losing any
9:06
money by planting them so you can try
9:09
them and you never know you might
9:11
absolutely love and try them so if
9:14
you're wanted to try different types of
9:16
seeds this year is my advice is get them
9:19
magazines grow your own and kitchen
9:20
Garden Magazine and you'll get plenty of
9:23
varieties to trying them or again go
9:26
through the seed catalogs and put across
9:28
an extra everything that you want to try
9:30
this year and give it a try it's nothing
9:33
to lose if you do fail you can try and
9:36
try again I've been trying and trying
9:38
again with carrots every year but one
9:40
year I will grow some good carrots and
9:43
when I do grow some good carrots you
9:45
will see that picture coming every day
9:47
on my Instagram
9:49
profile I'll be showing off that carrot
9:51
to the rest of the world and hopefully
9:54
we'll get a good result coming through
9:57
so yeah
10:00
yesterday we talked about making plans
10:03
for your weekend and making those lists
10:05
for down at the allotment today we've
10:07
been talking about making the list of
10:10
seeds what we're going to grow for the
10:11
year and I think it's been a productive
10:14
weekend this weekend and hopefully
10:18
tomorrow's episode we'll be talking
10:22
about catching up with gardening with
10:24

10:25
alotment what have we been up to what
10:27

10:31
hopefully got plenty of work done I have
10:34
pre-recorded this episode before I've
10:37
been to the alment on Saturday and
10:38
