0:24
episode hello and welcome back to
0:27
gardening with Ben well it's w Wednesday
0:30
and I can't get over this weather what
0:33
we're having at the moment in England
0:35
it's unbelievable um
0:37
from being it's meant to be winter and
0:41
we're getting like double figures at
0:44
this time of year it's brilliant and I'm
0:47
absolutely loving it because we've not
0:49
had any bad weather really this winter
0:52
whatsoever we had a bit of snow in
0:54
November but it only a tiny bit and it
0:56
didn't last for long at all but yeah
0:59
while every it's like this I am getting
1:01
so much done on my allotment it's
1:03
unbelievable well we've been back down
1:06
there today and we've had another busy
1:08
few hours down there and it's
1:11
progressing it certainly is
1:13
progressing and what we've been doing
1:15
today is I've been clearing out one of
1:17
my old strawberry beds that used to hold
1:20
my strawberries I've now moved them to a
1:21
different area of my plot and the issue
1:24
with this bed is that it's close to
1:27
where my summer raspberries are and what
1:29
what happens is that like I've said in
1:32
the past raspberries are like weeds if
1:36
the roots get gr on them you'll find
1:39
raspberries popping up everywhere and
1:43
these raspberries always take hold of
1:45
this strawberry bed so one of the
1:47
reasons why I wanted to move the
1:49
strawberries out of the way really
1:51
because the raspberries were taking all
1:52
the nutrition from the ground so I've
1:56
been clearing this area out and there's
1:59
there's lot of raspberries in it there's
2:01
a really lot of raspberries uh what have
2:03
grown in that ground this year and as
2:06
their new growth this year they should
2:09
through this year so what I've done is
2:12
I've been digging them up and I've been
2:14
moving them to a new area down the other
2:17
side of my plot cuz down one side I've
2:19
got raspberries growing all the way down
2:20
the side of the plot get absolutely
2:22
loads off them I really do well with
2:25
raspber and I haven't got anything
2:28
growing down the other side I planted my
2:30
formless black bre down there the other
2:33
day but I'm filling it up with all the
2:37
raspbery canes that are moving because
2:40
that's the thing with raspberries
2:41
they'll pop up everywhere but they are
2:43
quite easy to dig up and move to where
2:47
you want them uh so if you've got
2:49
raspberries growing everywhere just dig
2:51
them up and line them back up and
2:53
replant them it's easy really and I just
2:57
do that every single year I keep doing
2:59
that and it's made a really good hedge
3:01
of raspberries and if you were to go to
3:04
a shop or uh Garden Center you'd be
3:09
paying a lot of money for raspberry
3:11
canes possibly around £6 for four
3:15
raspberry canes or something like that
3:18
so if you've got raspber canes popping
3:20
up everywhere just dig them up and move
3:22
them they won't hurt and if you do it
3:24
now they'll get rud and they'll get
3:27
going again and hopefully fruit and then
3:31
you'll be able to continue your hedge
3:33
down the other side of the plot like I'm
3:35
doing and if you do it all the way down
3:38
the side of the plot you will have
3:40
absolutely loads of raspberries and the
3:43
cost of raspberries to buy in the
3:45
supermarket is expensive so it's great
3:47
to get fantastic returns from the
3:50
raspberry plants and I was looking at
3:52
the rubar prices in the supermarket the
3:55
other day wow that is expensive rubab
3:59
and I've got 16 Plants of it uh so yeah
4:03
uh I I really do get my money's worth
4:06
out of my allotment uh and that's where
4:08
it comes from from growing the fruit the
4:10
fruit pays for the allotment 10 times
4:14
over uh if I were to sell all my food
4:16
I'd pay for my allotment 10 times over
4:19
uh it's definitely one of the best
4:21
investments you can have on the plot and
4:24
that's why I'm trying to grow a bit more
4:25
food this year and I've like I said I've
4:28
currently just planted
4:30
my forless raspberries and I've
4:33
replanted my strawberries but I'm
4:35
looking at possibly getting some more
4:37
blueberry bushes on my plot I've got two
4:40
already but I'm wanting a few more
4:43
blueberries because again they're
4:44
expensive to buy um and they're
4:47
absolutely delicious if you grow them
4:49
well and get good returns from them so
4:52
I'm going to be purchasing a couple more
4:54
of those to plant all the alotment
4:55
remember if you are growing blueberries
4:57
they need to be planted in acious
5:00
compost and usually I plant them in
5:03
large pots and then sink them into the
5:05
ground and let them grow as they are so
5:09
yeah it's pretty easy to grow
5:10
blueberries you just keep them watered
5:12
and keep them fed really and they will
5:15
return great fruit for you to
5:19
enjoy so we've been doing that today and
5:22
what else have we been doing or just
5:24
general tidying up really I'm always
5:27
tidying up I've got so much to tidy I
5:29
spent half an hour like I say every day
5:32
when I go down to the alotment I'm going
5:33
to spend half an hour in my shed giving
5:35
it a bit of a clear out it's going to
5:38
take weeks to do it's such a mess and it
5:41
all needs repainting as well at some
5:44
point and spruing up uh and making nicer
5:47
really uh cuz it is looking a bit
5:49
dilapidated inside so we need to give it
5:52
a bit of TLC at some point and make it
5:55
nice again and make it welcoming and
5:58
good to filming
6:00
cuz I definitely need to do some more
6:02
filming uh down at the allotment so yeah
6:05
definitely for
6:06
that but what else are we going to be up
6:09
to I need to start getting things going
6:13
um I need to have got a lot of sweet
6:16
peas and I did start some before
6:19
Christmas but I never potted them on I
6:21
should have done and uh they went uh I
6:24
lost them uh but I need to start some
6:26
more sweet peas off so that might be a
6:29
job for tomorrow starting a load of
6:33
sweet peas off getting them going uh I'm
6:36
going to be starting them off in my flat
6:38
where it's warmer because I use uh my
6:40
little trick what to get them germinated
6:43
and that is to put a piece of kitchen
6:46
Boll in a t tupperware box and sprinkle
6:49
them all in and spray them with water uh
6:53
so that the kitchen roll is damp and
6:56
then I will
7:00
let them germinate I put the lid back on
7:01
the topware box and let them germinate
7:03
and I get literally 100% germination M
7:06
it's fantastic the results that I get
7:07
from them and I know which ones have
7:09
germinated and then I can pop them on
7:11
when you see that little Ro popping out
7:13
of the uh PE uh so that is a great way
7:17
to get them to germinate and sweet peas
7:19
did fantastic on my plot the last couple
7:21
of years I've had such a great display
7:24
and I'm hoping to get the same sort of
7:27
display again this year down on the plot
7:30
uh for you all to enjoy and to give
7:32
Bunches of flowers away as well because
7:34
that's the best thing about growing
7:35
sweet peas is that you can just keep
7:39
cutting them and the more you keep
7:40
cutting the flowers off the more the
7:42
flowers will grow because if you leave
7:44
the flowers on they'll go to seed and
7:46
they'll stop producing the flowers so
7:48
you have to keep cutting them you can be
7:50
going down to the plot every day and
7:51
picking flowers uh to see you all the
7:54
way through summer and into Autumn and
7:58
you can get some great displays and
8:00
thing is with sweet peas is that smell
8:02
absolutely fantastic you get a fantastic
8:05
smell from them and they will be
8:07
beautiful to have in the flat or in the
8:09
house so that is what I need to get
8:12
going with and I just need to start
8:15
making my lists really of what I want to
8:18
grow and where I want to grow it because
8:20
I need to start planning now um my plot
8:24
is going to be cleared by the end of
8:26
February possibly beginning of March
8:28
it'll all be ready day and then it'll be
8:31
a case of starting to do any maintenance
8:35
or build anything that I want to do
8:38
through March and then in April end of
8:41
March beginning of April I will be
8:43
sewing all my seeds and getting them
8:45
started so my plan is coming together
8:48
pretty well down at the site and it's
8:50
all coming on along really well I'm
8:54
getting everything done that I want to
8:56
do in time but the thing is if we get
8:58
some really bad weather and snow for a
9:00
few weeks it'll put a hold to all the
9:03
tracks uh where I'm up to but touch wood
9:06
it is staying on the right track at the
9:10
moment and we're getting some good
9:11
results from the plot so hopefully we're
9:15
going to get a fantastic looking site
9:18
this year and you never know I may enter
9:20
for the best allotment on site uh there
9:23
is a competition which has run through
9:25
the allotments uh for the best allotment
9:28
on site so I man
9:29
you never know uh get the inspectors
9:32
around looking around the plot and
9:34
seeing what they think uh of all my
9:36
allotment but we'll see how we get on it
9:39
all depends on time again once things
9:41
start growing it'll be a case of getting
9:43
down there and getting it watered all
9:45
the time and stuff like that and
9:47
obviously work gets in the way of doing
9:49
what you
9:50
enjoy so hopefully we'll get plenty done
9:54
so tomorrow I'll be back down at the
9:56
allotment so expect another episode on
10:00
what wouldve been up to at the plot and
10:02
then we will be back at work for the
10:04
weekend so there'll be episodes still
10:07
carried on through then but we'll be
10:08

topics on what you need to do so yeah I
