Late January chilies in the UK and
0:04
peppers, great idea or complete waste of
0:07
time? Well, welcome to Gardening with
0:10
Ben and today we're going to be sharing
0:12
our thoughts on whether it's a great
0:14
idea to sew your chilies and peppers now
0:16
or is it a complete waste of time? Now,
0:20
in previous videos, I've talked about
0:22
starting most seeds off in March time.
0:25
And whereas peppers and chilies, they
0:28
love to be started early cuz they need a
0:31
long growing period to get the great
0:33
plants that they produce. And yeah,
0:35
they'll be flowering around June, July
0:38
time, and you'll be harvesting them as
0:40
well around August time and getting some
0:43
hopefully great crops from them. They
0:45
need a long growing period. They need
0:48
warmth. They need the light. And without
0:50
them too, they won't grow very well at
0:53
all. Now, peppers and chilies need about
0:55
25 degrees to germinate. So, that is
0:58
very warm. So, I've got them in my flat.
1:00
I've got them on my windowsill where
1:02
there's plenty of light. And we're not
1:04
watering them a lot because they don't
1:07
like to be over watered. Obviously, they
1:09
won't dry out as fast with it being in
1:10
January. They might dry out if it's warm
1:12
in your flat. And just keep them
1:14
sprinkled with a bit of water and
1:16
moisture and they'll grow well. And pot
1:19
them on, keep them growing in your flat.
1:23
your houses on your window sills until
1:25
around March, April time. Then you can
1:28
possibly take them to your greenhouse or
1:30
your poly tunnel and continue them
1:32
growing there. You don't want them to be
1:35
cold and shocked and end up killing the
1:38
plant off and having to sew some seeds
1:40
again because around March, April time,
1:43
it might be a bit too late to get them
1:44
started as they do take a long time to
1:48
grow and to ripen and to get some great
1:51
fruits on them. So, it's not too late to
1:55
get growing peppers and chilies at this
1:58
time. Have a look around. There's loads
2:00
of varieties out there to choose from
2:02
now. And obviously different varieties
2:06
suit different climates and
2:10
I've gone for the bell peppers this
2:12
year. Uh they're like red, green, and
2:15
yellow. And they'll ripen in that order.
2:17
They'll be green first, then they'll
2:19
ripen to yellow and then to red. And
2:21
yeah, they're a great addition to the
2:23
garden. And I've also gone for a mild
2:27
chili because I don't like spicy
2:29
chilies. I'm not good around heat. So,
2:32
I've gone for a mild chili this year and
2:35
I've also gone for one from a
2:37
supermarket. Now, I've saw a fantastic
2:40
looking pepper in the supermarket and it
2:42
looked absolutely amazing. It was huge
2:44
and I've taken the seeds out of them and
2:46
I'm going to give them a go. Obviously,
2:48
quite a lot of people have commented
2:49
saying that they're not they won't grow
2:52
as well as the parent did, but I just
2:54
want to do it as an experiment. I love
2:56
experiments down at the a lotment,
2:57
trying different things and different
2:59
varieties. It's all about having fun in
3:01
growing and that's the best thing about
3:03
gardening. It's just an experiment to
3:05
see how well you actually do. If it
3:07
fails, you can always try again another
3:09
year. So yeah, have a look around, get
3:12
some peppers and chilies ordered and see
3:15
how they get on and let me know in the
3:17
comments if you're growing any this
3:18
year. Make sure you drop us a follow for
3:20
all our videos of tips and advice down
3:23
here at the a lotment. Until next time
3:25
everyone, remember keep smiling, keep
3:27
shining and keep gardening in reb
