In the Bible, Maundy Thursday focuses on love, sacrifice, service, and obedience, setting the scene for Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

The Biblical Setting of the Last Supper

The Last Supper was a Passover meal, shared by Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem. Passover already symbolised freedom and salvation, which gave deeper meaning to Jesus’ words and actions that night.

The Gospel accounts can be found in:

  • Matthew 26:17–30
  • Mark 14:12–26
  • Luke 22:7–38
  • John chapters 13–17

Each Gospel highlights different parts of the evening.

Jesus Shares Bread and Wine

During the meal, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said it represented his body. He then took a cup of wine and said it represented his blood, poured out for many.

This moment is known as the institution of Holy Communion (also called the Eucharist). Jesus told his disciples to continue this practice in remembrance of him.

This teaching forms the foundation of Christian worship today.

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

In John 13, Jesus performs a powerful act by washing his disciples’ feet. At the time, foot washing was the job of servants, not teachers or leaders.

By doing this, Jesus taught:

  • Humility
  • Servant leadership
  • Love in action

He told his disciples to follow his example and serve one another.

The New Commandment

Still in John’s Gospel, Jesus gives a new commandment:

“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

This commandment comes from the Latin word mandatum, which is where the name Maundy Thursday comes from.

The Betrayal Foretold

During the meal, Jesus revealed that one of the disciples would betray him. Judas Iscariot later left the gathering to arrange Jesus’ arrest.

This moment adds tension and sorrow to the Last Supper and shows that the events of the crucifixion were already unfolding.

Prayer After the Supper

After the meal, Jesus spoke at length to his disciples, offering comfort and teaching. These words are recorded in John chapters 14–17 and include what is known as Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer.

Jesus then went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he prayed in deep anguish, asking for strength to face what was coming.

The Arrest of Jesus

Later that night, Judas returned with soldiers. Jesus was arrested in the garden, marking the end of Maundy Thursday and the beginning of the events remembered on Good Friday.

Why the Last Supper Matters in the Bible

The Last Supper is central to the Bible because it:

  • Establishes Holy Communion
  • Explains Jesus’ sacrifice
  • Teaches love, humility, and service
  • Connects Passover with salvation through Christ

It brings together teaching, symbolism, and prophecy in a single evening.

Summary

In the Bible, Maundy Thursday centres on the Last Supper, where Jesus shared bread and wine, washed his disciples’ feet, gave a commandment to love one another, and prepared for his crucifixion. These events form the spiritual foundation of Holy Week and lead directly to Good Friday and Easter.
