hey everyone and welcome back to your
0:48
daily dose of gardening with Ben the
0:52
podcasts that are coming to on a daily
0:54
basis now and should be uploaded onto
0:58
your podcast platform around 7 : in the
1:00
morning so if you're not following us do
1:02
give us a follow hit the Bell as well to
1:04
get notified when the podcasts come up
1:07
and stay up to date with everything that
1:09
is happening so yesterday's podcast
1:12
episode we talked about everything that
1:15
you can plant in November so if you've
1:18
not listened to that podcast make sure
1:19
you do give it a listen to because
1:21
there's plenty of things that we can
1:23
still plan in the garden around this
1:25
time of year so why not give them a try
1:27
and see what you can grow I'm grow I'm
1:30
trying to grow plenty of stuff down at
1:32
my allotment at this time of year so
1:34
follow me and let's see if we can grow
1:37
some stuff
1:38
together so today's episode we're going
1:41
to be talking about all the things that
1:43
you can be doing in the allotment to do
1:46
the improvements and get everything Ship
1:49
Shape ready for next year for the
1:51
allotment so we're going to be talking
1:53
about that in today's podcast so let's
1:56
have a look at what jobs need doing down
2:00
in the allotment first of all we're
2:02
going to be talking about all the jobs
2:04
which need doing in the vegetable garden
2:07
at this time of year like I always say
2:09
is why not add these into a notebook so
2:13
that you know when you've done stuff you
2:15
can take it off and complete it that is
2:20
how I tend to work I usually write down
2:21
little jobs or things that I need to do
2:23
down at the allotment and then once I've
2:25
done it I tick it off and that's how I
2:28
get all my plot ready for the year ahead
2:30
and usually I'm on track of things like
2:33
I've nearly got all my alotment cleared
2:34
already ready for next year I'm well
2:37
ahead of getting everything
2:39
ready so first off in the vegetable
2:42
garden you need to clear away any spent
2:45
crops like that means like get rid of
2:48
all your tomato plants get rid of your
2:49
cucumbers get rid of your sweet corn any
2:51
squash plants that are rotten away get
2:54
them all cleared away and put on your
2:56
compost heat because you got to be
2:57
careful of diseases that are left and
3:00
spreading around and stuff like that
3:01
it's good to get everything cleared away
3:03
so that's nothing's festering down on
3:06
the
3:08
allotment next up is harvest the last of
3:11
your winter vegetables Harvest your
3:14
Hardy winter vegetables like cabbages
3:16
leaks brussel sprouts and kale and
3:19
usually parsnips as well after the first
3:21
few frosts because it adds nice taste to
3:25
the parsnip never Harvest them until
3:28
after you've had a couple of Frost the
3:30
frosts always improve the taste of them
3:32
the same goes for leaks and brussel
3:34
sprout Sprouts they always taste better
3:37
after a couple of frosts because they
3:39
can improve their
3:41
flavor like I said yesterday in
3:43
yesterday episode plant your garlic and
3:45
your onions as these are over wintering
3:49
vegetables and they can fill a bed up
3:51
and you can get some harvests from them
3:54
next year and obviously you can once
3:57
you've harvested them you can fill the
3:59
bed with something else because they'll
4:00
be already around June July time so
4:03
there's still plenty of time to grow
4:04
over veg in them
4:07
beds mulch your vegetable beds add a th
4:10
lay of organic mulch Like Straw compost
4:12
or well rotten manure over your
4:14
vegetable beds mulching helps protect
4:17
the soil from erosion suppresses the
4:19
weeds and improves its soil ready for
4:21
next
4:23
year prepare soil for spring planting
4:27
yes get that soil ready now that is what
4:30
I've done if you've been watching my
4:31
YouTube videos you will see that I've
4:33
nearly cleared every single bed on my
4:35
plot I've dug it all over I'm not
4:37
necessarily got all the weeds out we've
4:39
just dug it over cleared them all got
4:41
all the main big weeds out but over the
4:43
winter period we'll keep digging them
4:46
over getting all them Roots out getting
4:48
all that bind weed out and obviously
4:50
breaking up the soil when the frost
4:52
comes it can get in the soil and break
4:55
it all down really well and nice ready
4:57
for next year
4:59
protect perennial vegetables if you have
5:02
vegetables like asparagus AR choke or
5:05
rhab it's important to protect them
5:07
against Frost cut back asparagus after
5:10
they have died back and mulch around
5:12
crowns of perennials to insulate them
5:15
ready for the freezing temperatures
5:17
rhubarb usually does all right my
5:19
rhubarb usually survives well through
5:20
winter it's been in my allotment now for
5:22
20 years and it's still alive now so
5:26
that usually starts growing back around
5:28
March Time
5:30
clean and store your garden tools yes
5:33
this is one job that I don't always do
5:35
but it's a good time to wash them down
5:37
scrub them down get rid of any dirt off
5:40
them because they can Harbor diseases
5:43
and obviously oil your tools up to
5:47
prevent rust over the winter months as
5:49
well and it'll make your tools last
5:51
years to come repair any race beds and
5:55
garden structures now this is one job
5:57
that I always do for the winter which I
5:59
always believe on about in these
6:01
podcasts you probably sick to hear in
6:02
them about it but I always use the
6:05
winter period to do any repairs to my
6:07
allotment get things straightened tidy
6:10
and improve the shed there's always work
6:13
to be done in the shed especially if you
6:15
do love being in your shed like I do
6:17
there's always improvements that you can
6:19
do to that cover bare soil with green
6:23
manure if you have empty patches in your
6:25
vegetable garden consider growing and
6:28
sewing green manure such as mustard or
6:30
winter eyye these cover crops to help
6:32
protect soil from erosion suppress wheat
6:35
and add valuable organic matter and
6:38
nutrients back into the soil when turned
6:41
in before spring planting I've never
6:45
actually grown green manure let me know
6:47
by sending me a message if you have ever
6:49
grown green manure before I'd love to
6:52
hear about it protect crops in the
6:54
greenhouse or go coal frames if you got
6:57
crops or anything growing in your coal
6:59
firms or Greenhouse why not add some
7:01
bubble wrap to keep it warm protected or
7:04
use a greenhouse heater to keep things
7:07
warm I don't use a heater down at the
7:09
allotment or the polyon because I'm
7:10
never there in the week so I don't want
7:12
to leave a heater on when I'm not there
7:15
but if you've got it in your garden keep
7:17
it nice and warm and you'll protect your
7:20
crops over the
7:21
winter plan next year's Garden this is
7:24
what I always do I always draw a plan of
7:26
my allotment to see what it looks like
7:29
think about what I'm going to grow where
7:31
and try and rotate crops around you
7:34
don't want to plant the same stuff in
7:35
the same place year after year because
7:38
obviously they take the nutrients from
7:39
the ground so different vegetables use
7:41
different nutrients so that is why you
7:43
should keep moving stuff around and
7:45
obviously if there's diseases in the
7:47
soil from the previous year you don't
7:49
want to pass it onto the New Year's
7:51
growth protect brassers from pests
7:54
there's still lots of pests around like
7:57
pigeons and other wildlife Ed netting
8:00
and mesh to protect these crops from
8:02
being eaten during the winter months
8:04
because there's not much around for them
8:05
to eat at the moment so protect you like
8:08
kale cabbages your cauliflower your
8:10
broccoli any over wintering crops dig up
8:14
and store your root vegetables so like
8:17
now is the time to be like digging up
8:18
your carrots your parsnips obviously
8:21
like with parsnips like I said wait
8:22
until we've had a few Frost because it
8:24
adds flavor to them and your beetroots
8:27
you can store them in a Place packed in
8:31
sand or sawdust and they'll stay fresh
8:33
for several
8:34
months clean and organize your
8:37
Greenhouse now is the time to be
8:39
cleaning it down disinfecting it
8:42
sweeping it all out tidying it up the
8:45
reason why we disinfect it is because
8:47
there's diseases in there and it
8:49
prevents any mold and stuff like that
8:51
it's good idea to wash your Greenhouse
8:53
down thoroughly so that it lets more
8:55
light in through the windows through
8:57
winter because obviously the more like
8:59
the better that it keeps it warmer so
9:02
give it a good scrub down because they
9:04
do get green and they get moss growing
9:07
in them and everything like that give it
9:09
a good wash out and make sure you check
9:11
all like the pegs and everything to make
9:13
sure it's all sturdy for the
9:16
winter period because obviously we get
9:19
the winds we get the storms and stuff
9:21
like that so it's good to check over
9:22
greenhouse and make sure it's all sturdy
9:25
and ready for the year
9:27
ahead so next so we're going to talk
9:30
about what needs to be done in the fruit
9:32
Garden throughout November there's
9:33
plenty of jobs which you need doing out
9:35
in the fruit Garden to protect those
9:37
fruit trees and bushes ready for getting
9:40
great crops next year now November is a
9:42
perfect time to prune apple and pear
9:44
trees don't prune plums don't prune
9:46
cherries you don't prune anything that's
9:49
got a stone inside it until
9:52
round summer time that is when you prune
9:56
your plums and your cherries and your
9:57
apricots so you only prune apple and
10:00
pears at this time of year now be
10:03
careful when you're pruning them don't
10:04
do what I did I man man a massive prune
10:06
last year my cooking apple tree and it's
10:08
not fruited this year because I've
10:10
stressed it out I believe that is what
10:12
they call it so only prun it as much as
10:15
it needs it sometimes Don't Go Over the
10:18
Top just give it a tiny bit of a prune
10:20
and then prune it some more the year
10:22
after so hopefully I'm not going to Pro
10:24
man this year so hopefully I'll get lots
10:27
of cooking apples next year
10:30
mulch around fruit trees and bushes this
10:33
helps give nutrition back to the plants
10:37
and helps feed them and it insulates the
10:40
roots from freezing temperatures retains
10:42
the moisture and suppresses the weeds
10:44
but if you putting mulch around your
10:47
fruit trees don't put them right up to
10:50
the trunk as it can cause rotten leave a
10:54
bit of a gap around the trunk harvest
10:57
the last of the Autumn fruits make sure
10:59
you're harvesting your apples your pears
11:01
your quines these can sometimes benefit
11:04
from the coola WEA it enhances sweetness
11:06
and the flavor of the apples so make
11:09
sure you get all them harvested ready
11:11
for the winter if not the squirrels or
11:14
pinch
11:15
them protect fruit your soft fruit
11:18
plants from the frost like your
11:20
strawberries your raspers and other soft
11:22
fruits can be vulnerable to frost damage
11:25
protect them by covering the crowns with
11:27
straw fleece or mulch to help insulate
11:29
them during the colder months this will
11:31
prevent frost from penetrating too
11:34
deeply and harming the
11:36
plants plant new fruit trees and bushes
11:39
as I said in yesterday's episode now is
11:41
the perfect time to plant your fruit
11:43
trees and your bushes prune your
11:45
raspberry canes for summer fruit in
11:47
raspberries prune back the canes that
11:50
have fruited this year leaving the new
11:52
canes for next season's crop autn fruit
11:55
in raspber should be cut down to ground
11:58
level after they finish producing this
12:00
process encourages strong healthy growth
12:03
in the springtime and they will produce
12:05
new fruit on them new
12:08
canes clear up any fallen leaves and
12:11
fuit clearing up any fallen leaves and
12:13
fruit and dead BRD around your fruit
12:14
trees and bushes it's important to
12:16
prevent the spread of disease and pests
12:19
many fungal diseases can overwinter in
12:21
the soil on decaying fruit so removing
12:24
any material to help maintain a
12:26
healthier environment for your plant
12:30
protect fruit trees from pests I usually
12:33
give mine a good winter spray down over
12:37
the winter months and then I spray them
12:38
again in W Springtime stops any moths
12:41
from hibernating in the trees also get
12:44
some sticky bands to stop wingless
12:47
insects like winter mths from climbing
12:48
the tree and laying the eggs in the bark
12:51
which could also damage the Spring Tree
12:53
in
12:54
springtime Check and repair any fruit
12:57
cages take off all netting over your
13:00
winter to stop because you don't want it
13:02
all getting ripped with snow and winter
13:04
damage so take off all your netting for
13:06
the winter to protect it and then put it
13:09
back on again in the spring time prun
13:12
your gooseb and your currents again
13:14
prune these back remove any dead or
13:16
crossing branches and fin out the center
13:19
of the plant to improve air circulation
13:21
this will reduce the risk of
13:24
disease now you can divide and replant
13:27
rhubarb Crowns if you rhubarb Crow
13:29
plants have become overcrowded November
13:32
is a perfect time to lift and divide the
13:34
crowns carefully dig up the plants split
13:37
it into sections with a sharp speed and
13:39
replant the divisions this will
13:41
rejuvenate the plants and improve their
13:45
productivity plant fruit canes and Vines
13:48
as we said in the previous epode now is
13:51
the time to be planting all
13:53
them check stored fruit if you're
13:55
storing any apples or pears or fruits
13:58
regularly check them for any signs of
14:00
rot or damage remove any affected fruit
14:02
to prevent the rot from spreading to the
14:04
healthy ones protect your Great Vines
14:07
Now is a time to prune and winterize
14:09
them cut back this year's growth to
14:12
encourage strong Vines next year and
14:14
cover the base of the planet with mulch
14:16
to protect the roots from freezing
14:18
temperatures consider wrapping the vines
14:20
with fleece in cold regions to prevent
14:23
frost damage to
14:25
them so let's talk about what you can
14:28
actually do in the flower garden this
14:30
month there's still lots that need doing
14:33
to get them Gardens looking absolutely
14:36
gorgeous for next year you need to put
14:37
in the effort and tidy them up ready for
14:41
next year so this is all the jobs which
14:43
you can do in the flower
14:45
garden lift and store tender bulbs and
14:49
tubers so that means lifting any like
14:51
gladiol eyes bouras to protect them from
14:54
the frost carefully dig them up clean
14:56
off the soil and allow them to dry for a
14:58
few few days in a sheltered place and
15:01
then put in a box full of
15:04
sand plant fling spring flowering
15:08
bulbs like I said in my previous episode
15:11
now is the perfect time to be planting
15:12
all those spring bulbs like your
15:14
daffodils your high Sims your tulips
15:18
everything like that to encourage the
15:20
bees to come to your alotment and to
15:22
your
15:24
Gardens protect delicate plants from
15:27
frost any plants what
15:31
are prone to getting Frost damage like
15:34
your canas your fuches
15:37
geraniums protect them from frost and if
15:41
you're worried about them fetch them
15:43
indoors in a shed in a poly tunnel putt
15:46
them up and keep them warm until next
15:50
year cut back perennials now is the time
15:53
to cut back any spent growth on any
15:56
perennials like piers hosters and
15:58
delphiniums trim back dead foilage to
16:01
ground level to tidy up the garden and
16:03
prevent disease or pests from over
16:06
wintering prun your roses if you got any
16:10
climbing roses any rambling roses any
16:12
roses cut back long shoots to prevent
16:15
them from being damaged by by Winter
16:17
Winds remove any dead diseased or
16:19
crossing branches for hybrid tea and
16:23
flond Roses focus on pruning in late
16:26
winter but you can lightly trim them now
16:28
to T tide it
16:29
up mulchy flower beds applying a thick
16:33
lay of mulch around your flower beds
16:35
helps to protect the plant roots from
16:37
freezing improve soil structure
16:39
suppresses winter weeds use organic
16:43
materials like compost or well red
16:45
manure or leaf mold or B chips and
16:47
spread it around the base of plants
16:49
after cutting back
16:52
perennials check and clean your garden
16:56
structures like I mentioned make sure
16:59
clean them all down clean down all your
17:00
pagola trellises plant supports you
17:03
don't want nerd diseases on them even if
17:05
you use antibacterial spray that will
17:08
clean them up and stop any diseases from
17:10
spreading
17:12
around so any Hardy annual seeds so now
17:16
you can be sewing your sweet peas
17:17
poppies or corn flowers this will give
17:20
them all a head start ready for next
17:21
year but make sure you save them inside
17:24
your Greenhouse or your polyon where
17:25
it's warmer because the frost can kill
17:28
them out out
17:31
side protect your Alpine plants if
17:33
you've got any Alpine plants make sure
17:36
you cover the plants with grit to
17:37
improve drainage and prevent water
17:39
logging which can cause them to rot some
17:42
delicate Alpine plants may also need
17:44
protection from excessive winter
17:47
moisture plan your next year's flower
17:50
displays now I said this uh in an
17:52
episode the other day now is the time to
17:54
be planning for next year think about
17:57
all them flowers that you want want to
17:59
try and grow in the garden where you
18:01
want to grow them different varieties
18:03
that you want to try and grow think
18:05
about it all have a look online have a
18:07
look in brochures or go into the garden
18:09
centers get those packets of seeds or
18:12
bulbs and think about what you're going
18:14
to be growing next year because think
18:16
about it now can make some beautiful
18:18
blooms for next year in the
18:21
garden so that is everything what you
18:24
need to be doing in your garden and
18:26
alotment in November
18:28
obviously there's other stuff that you
18:30
can be doing but those are the main

tasks that need doing so I hope you've
