tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34

0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brew and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben I hope you're
0:50
enjoying that the podcasts are now back
0:52
again like I said I do apologize that
0:55
we've had a small little break in
0:57
between recording these episodes but
1:00
yeah we're back now now that we're
1:01
settled into our new place so as I
1:05
mentioned in yesterday's podcast today's
1:07
podcast we're going to be talking about
1:08
all the things that you can plant in
1:10
December whether it be vegetables
1:12
whether it be fruit or whether it be
1:15
flowers and I know a lot of the times
1:18
people like to write down these little
1:20
tips and advice so if you've not got a
1:22
notepad make sure you keep some notes on
1:25
what you can plant this month let me
1:27
know if you're going to be trying any of
1:28
them I always love to hear hear back
1:30
from you all you can anytime message me
1:32
on Instagram and I will always try and
1:35
get back to you so let's start off
1:39
talking about what we can grow in the
1:41
vegetable garden in December can't
1:44
believe it's December already this
1:46
year's gone absolutely so fast but I'm
1:48
happy that it's gone fast because it's
1:50
been an awful year for growing so
1:52
fingers crossed next year is going to be
1:54
a much better one and hopefully we get
1:57
some fantastic produce
2:00
so what can you sew in the vegetable
2:02
garden this month well last couple of
2:06
months ago we planted all our bulbs for
2:09
our onions but now we need to start
2:12
thinking about sewing those onion seeds
2:16
yes sewing onion seeds now I did a
2:19
little experiment quite a few years ago
2:21
on growing onions from seed and growing
2:25
the sets as well which are the small
2:26
little bulb ones and actually the seed
2:30
ones did a lot better than the set
2:32
variety so I may try starting some of
2:35
these off myself cuz I'd love to try and
2:37
get some nice big onions again and if we
2:40
start them off now they'll get nice and
2:42
big in time for July June July time when
2:45
we Harvest them so the variety of onion
2:49
seeds that you need to start sewing at
2:51
this time of month ready for sewing uh
2:53
planted out in March April time or the
2:57
Alysa Craig variety of of onion seeds so
3:01
if you're wanted to sew onion seeds this
3:03
month you can sew Alysia Craig now you
3:07
can either start them now or start them
3:09
in January but obviously starting them
3:11
now you'll get a head start and
3:14
hopefully get some massive onions for
3:16
next year so let's get started with some
3:20
onions everyone I'll have to start some
3:22
off myself and then you can follow along
3:25
and see how well my onions get on this
3:28
year next up is lettuce now if you got a
3:31
poly tunnel or a greenhouse you can
3:34
continue growing lettuce throughout the
3:36
winter months you can't grow it outside
3:38
it's too cold but if You' got a poly
3:40
tunnel or a greenhouse especially a
3:41
heated Greenhouse you can carry on
3:44
growing Lees throughout the winter
3:45
months now the variety of lettuce that
3:48
you need to grow this month is winter
3:51
gem or Arctic King but like I said it
3:53
needs to be a nice warm Greenhouse so if
3:56
you wanted to grow lettuce throughout
3:57
the winter months sew some gem or Arctic
4:01
King lettuce next up is broad beans now
4:06
don't do what I did well you can do what
4:08
I did but um I tend to not sew broad
4:13
beans into the soil straight outside
4:15
because squirrels will get them rats
4:17
will get them mice will get them
4:18
anything will get them because there's
4:20
not much growing around at this time of
4:22
year so they're very vulnerable to
4:25
Wildlife coming along and eating them so
4:28
I thought I'd start mine off in in seed
4:30
trays however the squirrels got into my
4:32
shed and they ate the lot of them so you
4:37
can never win but however I've got a
4:40
little plan to do get some growing where
4:42
no Wildlife can get any of them so stay
4:46
tuned for that video because it's it's
4:48
quite a good little tip I'll tell you
4:50
that but if you wanted to grow some
4:52
broad beans this month this month is the
4:55
month to grow aquad dulus Claudia aquad
5:00
Claudia broad beans now obviously if
5:03
you're sewing them now they'll be ready
5:04
to harvest before the blackfly even
5:06
appear so if you don't like the black
5:08
fly all over them now is the perfect
5:11
time to be picking
5:14
those uh sewing those broad beans now
5:17
obviously you can still sew them in
5:19
March but they'll be ready to harvest
5:21
when the Black Fly are around so it's up
5:24
to you you can obviously try and grow
5:25
both of them but now is the time to grow
5:28
aquadis Claudia broad
5:30
beans so next on is to fruit what fruit
5:35
can we plant during the winter months
5:39
well obviously you can actually plant
5:42
most fruit trees at this time of year
5:44
now is the perfect time to be planting
5:46
those fruit trees as it's wetter it's
5:49
damper and The Roots take on the fruit
5:52
trees the fruit trees are dormant mainly
5:55
at this time of year they won't be
5:56
growing the fruit they'll be
5:57
concentrating on growing the branches
5:59
and growing The Roots at this time of
6:01
year hence why it's the best time of
6:03
year to grow plant your fruit trees and
6:06
obviously if you planted them in
6:07
summertime they'll be concentrating on
6:10
producing the food that's when they
6:12
usually produce a fuit and obviously
6:14
they'll need watering more that's why we
6:16
plant our fruit trees during the winter
6:19
months so any fruit trees you can plant
6:21
during December you can obviously plant
6:24
your blueberries as well at this time of
6:26
year if you're planting blueberries make
6:28
sure you plant them in ious soil which
6:31
is acid soil to help them flourish they
6:34
prefer ericaceous to normal soil next up
6:39
is raspberries you can plant your
6:41
raspberries this time a month whether it
6:42
be summer fruit and raspberries or autum
6:45
fruit and raspber whichever variety you
6:48
want now is the perfect time to be
6:50
sewing them planting them not sewing
6:52
them planting raspberries next up is
6:55
strawberry plants now you know I
6:57
absolutely love strawberries now
7:00
obviously you can plant strawberries at
7:02
this time of year the leaves will die
7:05
off at this time of year because it is
7:06
cold and the frost will get them but the
7:08
plants won't die as they can withstand
7:12
cold weather and make sure they planted
7:16
out keep them well watered and you
7:19
should in favor be getting some
7:21
strawberries on them next year if you
7:22
plant them now so if you want any
7:24
strawberries ask around because you
7:26
won't have them in green garden centers
7:28
friends family who have got cuttings off
7:31
of other strawberry plants ask around
7:33
and see if anyone's got any that you can
7:35
plant at this time of year
7:37
rubarb now if you wanted to start some
7:40
rhubarb off now is the time to plant
7:42
your rhubarb
7:44
crowns as the dormant and the wet
7:48
conditions in December help the crowns
7:50
to establish strong routs however don't
7:54
try and harvest them in the first year
7:56
you need to set let those settle in
7:59
establish the crown in the ground and
8:02
then you harvest it on the second year
8:04
don't be tempted to harvest it in the
8:06
first year even if there's rhubarb on it
8:08
just let it grow and pick it the year
8:11
after and obviously you can plant your
8:13
gooseb as well at this time of year so
8:16
any fruit trees and bushes is a perfect
8:18
time to plant them during December
8:21
month next up is flowers now what
8:24
flowers can we plant in December you
8:27
might think it's too cold to be planting
8:28
flowers but now is the perfect time to
8:32
be growing
8:33
geraniums now if you're wanted some
8:35
geraniums to flower next year in summer
8:39
now is the time to be sewing geranium
8:41
seeds
8:42
indoors place them in a warm sunny
8:45
window so and they'll be ready to bloom
8:48
for an EXT extended period once spring
8:50
arrives by sewing the M light you can
8:53
enjoy a beautiful geranium for longer in
8:55
your garden and containers now I've
8:57
grown geraniums from seeds and they are
9:00
actually really easy to grow and
9:03
obviously saves you a lot of money
9:04
because geranium plants are quite
9:06
expensive I've dug up all my draining
9:08
plants from last year and I've put them
9:10
inside my shed so that the frost doesn't
9:12
get them in the snow and hopefully I can
9:14
plant them out again next year so you
9:17
can actually keep them going year after
9:19
year if you look after
9:21
them you can plant some spring bulbs
9:24
still at this time of year in garden
9:26
centers you of to see them selling them
9:28
off at this time of year
9:29
you can plant your tulips you can plant
9:31
your daffodils you can plant your snow
9:33
drops highs youve still plenty of times
9:36
to be planting your spring flowers I've
9:39
known people plant them in SE uh in
9:41
January and they still managed to get
9:43
some blooms on them so if you see at
9:45
night on offer buy them and plant them
9:49
and it'll encourage the bees when they
9:51
wake up from hibernation to come around
9:53
and help with
9:55
pollination next up are helor known as
9:59
the Christmas Rose helor are a winter
10:02
garden essential these Hardy perennials
10:04
thrive in cool temperature and can be
10:06
planted in December to bring delicate
10:08
blooms to your garden fruit late winter
10:10
and early spring they elegant flowers in
10:13
shades of white pink and purple add a
10:15
soft enchanting touch to any winter
10:19
landscape so if you want to add some
10:21
color to your garden add some heliball
10:24
as well as that you can also plant your
10:26
cyclan with the dainty flowers and
10:28
attractive foilage
10:29
cyclen make a wonderful addition to a
10:32
winter garden they thrive in the cool
10:34
temperatures and can be planted in
10:35
sheltered outdoor spaces or kept indoors
10:38
as a house plant cyclan blooms in shades
10:41
of pink red and white and will add a
10:43
Charming touch to your garden throughout
10:45
winter if you wanted to add some other
10:47
winter color you can obviously plant
10:49
winter pansies and you can also plant
10:52
your primroses at this time of year so
10:55
there's still plenty of flowers that you
10:56
can plant during this month to add lots
10:59
of color to your garden because there's
11:00
not much color around in your garden at
11:03
this time of year so hopefully those
11:06
will give you some ideas on what plants
11:08
you can plant in the garden so if you're
11:11
listening to this podcast make sure you
11:13
do get in touch and let me know what
11:14
you're going to play planting this month
11:16

11:18
onion seeds so make sure you stay tuned
11:20
for that YouTube video and if you want
11:22
to follow along feel free to follow
11:24
along while I plant mine and let's see
11:27
who does the best onions I know probably
11:29
won't be
11:31
me I'm very honest but yeah I hope
