dealing with gardening and a lotment
0:02
burnout welcome to Gardening with Ben in
0:05
today's episode we're going to be
0:07
talking about gardening and a lotment
0:08
burnout now you can get burnt out from
0:13
doing a lotments and gardens because if
0:16
you've got a brand new a lotment
0:18
obviously you're putting a lot of time
0:20
and effort in and getting it tidied
0:21
cleared done and it can certainly take
0:24
it out of you it is a hard work having
0:27
an a lotment if people say it's easy
0:30
they're lying to you it's a hard thing
0:32
to have an a lotment it's a full-time
0:34
job in itself and you see lots of photos
0:39
online of people's a lotments and
0:40
gardens and they may look fantastic
0:42
they're probably not showing you the
0:43
worst bits cuz I always do i always show
0:46
the worst bits i've got loads of worst
0:48
areas and my a lotment plots covered in
0:52
awful but yeah it can take it out of you
0:56
and the best thing I always say with
0:58
having an a lotment and garden is do
1:01
things in moderation don't spend too
1:04
much time down there if you've got a
1:06
brand new a lotment cover it all over
1:08
and work a bit at a time and then cover
1:10
it back over until you actually need it
1:13
and don't try and do it all in the first
1:15
year i've had my plot 16 years maybe 20
1:19
actually and I've still not done all of
1:21
my plot yet there's still areas that
1:22
I've not done or touched or grown in and
1:26
I'm still working my way through my a
1:28
lotment every year I try to improve a
1:31
certain area i spend a bit of money on
1:33
in a certain area and improve it and try
1:36
and make it a bit more maintenancefree
1:38
the more maintenancefree your a lotment
1:40
is the better and by what I mean by
1:43
maintenancefree is that I'll use like
1:45
black membrane around my strawberries so
1:47
that it stops the weeds from growing or
1:49
I'll put paving slabs down as paths so
1:51
that the weeds don't grow or I'll just
1:54
make it easy as possible to grow in and
1:58
not have to do much work and once it's
2:00
done it's tidied and sorted i've built
2:03
all my beds out of wood made them all
2:05
nice and organized i've got the layout
2:08
sorted so do a bit every single year and
2:13
maybe once you've done it all then you
2:14
can start to improve certain areas like
2:16
I said and make it more maintenancefree
2:20
and just so that you don't have to burn
2:22
yourself out and if you go to the a
2:28
hour maybe at night and for a few hours
2:31
at a weekend you will be able to keep on
2:34
top of it and hopefully keep it under
2:36
control and I'm saying that like it's
2:38
easy but it's not it's not easy
2:41
whatsoever you spend a week off from
2:44
your a lotment and you'll come back and
2:46
the weeds will have come back we've not
2:48
had no rain now for 21 days where I am
2:51
so things are pretty dry and things
2:53
aren't growing as fast as they should do
2:55
the vegetables are growing fast because
2:57
we're keeping them watered but the weeds
2:59
aren't growing where they shouldn't be
3:00
at the moment but until we have the
3:02
first downpour of rain then all the
3:05
weeds will start growing back and it
3:07
will be all systems go again and it'll
3:09
be hard to keep on top of again and then
3:12
you'll be working hard to try and get
3:13
all the weeds up and keep on top of it
3:15
all but there's certain tools out there
3:17
to help you with keeping on top of
3:19
things and the best garden tool around
3:22
what I can recommend is a garden hoe it
3:25
doesn't get the roots out but it chops
3:26
the tops off the weeds now if you go
3:28
around your beds once a week with a hoe
3:31
you will keep on top of the weeds and
3:33
you won't have to spend as much time
3:35
doing it like I said it won't get the
3:36
roots out but it'll chop the tops off
3:39
it'll stop the plant from taking all the
3:41
nutrition from the ground where the
3:43
vegetables are to produce the weed a
3:46
weed is a plant that shouldn't grow
3:48
where you want it to grow it's not
3:49
necessarily a bad plant but it's a plant
3:52
that grows where you shouldn't want it
3:56
but yeah the main thing about it is
3:58
don't burn yourself out when doing an a
4:00
lotment have plenty of breaks have a
4:02
seating area like I have i didn't have a
4:04
seating area on my a lotment for 16
4:06
years last year was an a year when I
4:09
thought I'm going to build myself
4:10
seating area a place that I can relax
4:12
and sit and enjoy look at my a lotment
4:14
and see the great things what I've done
4:16
down here and hopefully see what I'm
4:20
producing as well so don't let an
4:23
aotment burn you out or a garden enjoy
4:26
the process take your time and just do a
4:30
bit at a time every so often and it will
4:33
make it more of a hobby rather than a
4:35
chore and you'll get the enjoyment out
4:38
of it a lot more than you would do so
4:41
