welcome back to Gardening with Ben In
0:03
today's episode we're going to be
0:04
planting our sunflowers out As they're
0:08
getting too big for the pots it's still
0:10
quite cool here in Sheffield but
0:14
hopefully we can get them out We're
0:17
going to have a little cold spell this
0:18
week but then it's going to get
0:20
warmer So hopefully they will not die on
0:24
me Hopefully they'll survive the colder
0:27
nights but we're going to get them out
0:29
and get them planted and see if we can
0:32
get the tallest sunflower this year in
0:34
our little competition that we're doing
0:36
in our gardening Discord See who can
0:40
grow the biggest sunflower It's me
0:43
against quite a few others and
0:46
some novice gardeners as well So we need
0:50
to try and win Really we can't let the
0:54
even though I still class myself as a
0:56
novice So let's have a look at our
0:57
sunflowers and see how big they are at
1:00
moment So as you can see they're quite
1:03
tall So they need to get out in the soil
1:07
to get them bigger and get them
1:09
established and get them growing So we
1:11
need to prepare a bed to plant these
1:14
sunflowers in to get you nice huge ones
1:17
We're going to win this competition
1:18
Trust me I think we're going to use this
1:21
bed to grow them in It's got some old
1:22
beetroot in it So we're going to dig it
1:24
all out get it all cleared get it dug
1:26
over make sure it's weed free and get
1:29
them planted This is a sunny bed this
1:31
one It gets sun quite a lot So we need
1:34
nice sunshine to get them nice and big
1:37
in So I got out most of the weeds And as
1:40
you can see we've got some shellots
1:41
growing as well That's
1:43
shellot But yeah we're going to just um
1:47
give it a good rotate over to get it dug
1:50
over cuz it's a bit composty So we're
1:53
going to dig it over and loosen the soil
1:56
up So let's see our tool that we're
1:58
going to be using We're going to be
1:59
using this Wolf Garden tool which is
2:02
absolutely fantastic It's got a hole on
2:04
it and it's got blades on it as well to
2:06
chop it all up So let's see in action
2:22
As you can see it's chopping it up
2:24
rather good Taking out some of the roots
3:09
go So we've got all the sunflowers
3:11
outside what we're going to plant today
3:13
We've got some fish blood and burn as
3:15
well to give them an extra kick and to
3:17
get them started So we're going to dig a
3:19
hole put some of this in the bottom and
3:21
then plant a sunflower on top Hopefully
3:24
get some big sunflowers growing So it's
3:27
a case of making a hole and then
3:30
sprinkling some in to the
3:33
bottom and then when it waters it'll
3:37
well So there we go We have his first
3:40
one in So we're just going to back fill
3:42
it with the soil like so We'll get all
3:45
them weeds out They'll die back anyway
3:48
now that they've been all dug out So
3:50
yeah let's get them all
3:53
in So we've got them all planted out now
3:56
We've got two rows there So what we're
3:58
going to do is we're just going to give
3:59
them that extra bit of food So we're
4:00
going to spread some more fish and blood
4:02
around the top so that it soaks into the
4:05
soil as well and gives them that extra
4:09
So there we have it all planted So last
4:11
job is to give them a nice drink of
4:13
water Remember sunflowers are heavy
4:15
drinkers once they get established So
4:17
yeah keep them well watered And
4:19
obviously we need to get some big canes
4:21
as well at some point to support them as
4:25
bigger So let's get them all watered So
4:29
I hope you've enjoyed that video of us
4:30
planting our sunflowers Make sure you
4:32
stay up to date with how well they're
4:34
getting on whether they get eaten or
4:35
whether they survive And get growing and
4:38
see if we can grow the tallest sunflower
4:40
and beat everyone else So until next
4:42
time everyone remember keep smiling keep
4:44
shining and keep gardening with bed
