How to Make Pancakes (Easy Step-by-Step Guide)

Making pancakes at home is quick, simple, and requires only a few basic ingredients. This method shows how to make classic thin pancakes, the traditional style enjoyed in the UK, but it can be easily adapted to suit your taste.

Ingredients

This recipe makes about 6–8 pancakes.

  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 300ml milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (plus extra for frying)
  • A pinch of salt

How to Make Pancake Batter

  1. Put the flour and salt into a mixing bowl.
  2. Make a well in the centre and crack in the eggs.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, starting from the centre and working outwards, until the batter is smooth and lump-free.
  4. Whisk in the tablespoon of oil.

The batter should have a thin consistency, similar to single cream.

Rest the Batter

If you have time, leave the batter to rest for 20–30 minutes. This helps the flour absorb the liquid and gives softer pancakes, but the batter can be used straight away if needed.

How to Cook Pancakes

  1. Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat.
  2. Lightly grease the pan with a small amount of oil, wiping away any excess.
  3. Pour a small ladle of batter into the pan, tilting it quickly to spread the batter thinly and evenly.
  4. Cook for 30–60 seconds until the edges lift and the underside is lightly golden.
  5. Flip the pancake and cook for a further 20–30 seconds.
  6. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining batter.

Traditional Pancake Toppings

Classic UK pancake toppings include:

  • Lemon juice and sugar
  • Golden syrup
  • Honey
  • Fresh fruit
  • Jam

The most traditional option is lemon juice with a sprinkle of sugar.

Common Pancake Problems and Fixes

Batter too thick
Add a splash of milk and whisk again.
