Sowing and Planting

Turnips are best grown when it’s a cooler climate and not too hot. they do not like soil that is rich . Plant the turnip seeds little and often to get a decent supply of crops.

When to plant

If you require an early crop these can be sown from March to June. For your main crop these can be sown from July to August.

Varieties

There are not too many varieties to try when growing turnip but these are some of the best ones to try:-

  • Atlantic
  • Milan Purple Top
  • Snowball

Planting

When sowing turnip seeds they need to be around 2cm deep. Sow them at 25cm intervals so they have plenty of room to grown and for you to keep weed free round them.

Growing

It’s good to keep turnips covered with fleece to keep them cool in the summer but in winter it protect them from the frost.

Harvesting

Turnips can grow pretty fast. They only take 6-12 weeks to be ready to harvest. If you are eating them raw pull them when they are the size of a golf ball but if you are using them to cook with pull them at the size of a tennis ball.
