Swedes are best grown in an open area that is not shaded. Swedes are know for being grown as a field crop that do not have fences round or walls.
Turnips are very hard so in right conditions can be left in the ground until needed in the winter so can be picked as when needed.
Sowing and planting Swede
When to plant Swede
Swede can be planted in late May in the south and in June in the North. Swedes will grow well in fertile ground. Do not plant in the ground where the soil is acidic.

Planting Swede
You can sow swedes where they need to grow. Sow them thinly in hole 12 mm deep and around 18 inches apart. This will allow them plenty of space to develop.
Growing Swede
Thin the plants out once they start growing to intervals of around 12 inch’s apart. this will allow them plenty of space to develop. Swedes do not need much maintenance. Just keep hoeing round them to keep the weeds down.
Harvesting Swede
Start harvesting the swedes once they get to a decent size. Lift them as and when they are required from autumn to spring. A few can be pulled as reserves for when the ground gets frozen. They need to be kept in a cool airy place such as a garage or a shed.
