Welcome to our section on tips for growing Courgettes.
Here we will give you advice, tips and guidance on sowing, growing and harvesting Courgettes in the Uk and the rest of the world.
Sowing and Planting
When growing courgettes you only need 2-3 plants as you will get ample off if you keep picking them at a small size. You are best starting 6 plants just in case you loose any to pests etc.
When to plant
Courgettes can be planted from April under glass. Most people tend to plant them in May.
Varieties
Courgettes now come in many shapes, sizes and colour. Including Yellow ones or even as a ball shape.
Planting
When sowing the courgette seeds you are best sowing them in the greenhouse. If you have not got a greenhouse sow them with protection over the top like a plastic bottle.
Sow the courgette seeds around 3cm deep in decent sized plant pots. Before moving them outdoors harden them off by taking them outside for a few hours then bring them back indoors. Do this for around a week.
Growing
When growing them outdoors they need a nice sunny spot with soil that is well fertilized and holds onto the moisture. A lot of gardeners put straw around them to help the keep the moisture in and also protect the crop from the soil. If the courgettes are not pollinating do it yourself with a paint brush.
Harvesting
It does not take long for courgettes to start appearing on the plants if you look after them well. You can usually get some off between 6-10 weeks after planting. Pick the courgettes when they are small so you keep yourself getting a crop through the year.
