How (and How Much) to Water Sweetcorn
How (and How Much) to Water Sweetcorn
Sweetcorn is famous for being “thirsty,” especially as it reaches full height and fills out those delicious ears. The right watering habits can make the difference between skimpy cobs and a bountiful, juicy harvest. Here’s how to get it right!
How Much Water Does Sweetcorn Need?
- Young Plants/Seedlings:
Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy. Water little and often, ensuring the top 2–3cm (1 in) stays damp. - Mature Plants (Tasseling & Silking):
Water deeply—at least 2.5cm (1 in) per week during dry spells. Sweetcorn’s greatest need is during tasseling (when flowers form at the top) and as ears fill out. - Check Soil Moisture:
Probe soil with your finger; if it’s dry below the surface, it’s time to water.
When Should You Water Sweetcorn?
- Morning is Best:
Water in the morning to minimize evaporation and reduce fungal risk. - During Heatwaves:
Water more frequently, especially if leaves wilt by midday. - Consistent Moisture is Crucial:
Don’t let the soil dry out for extended periods, especially during pollination and cob development.
Watering Techniques for Sweetcorn
- Deep Watering:
Give your sweetcorn a soaking to encourage deep root growth—shallow watering leads to weak, shallow roots. - At the Base:
Direct water at the soil—not over the leaves—to help roots absorb maximum moisture and reduce fungal disease. - Mulch Matters:
Add a thick mulch (straw, grass clippings, or compost) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Common Watering Pitfalls
- Overwatering:
Soggy soil and waterlogged roots can rot young corn. Ensure good drainage and don’t water again until the soil surface starts to dry out. - Underwatering:
Irregular watering can stunt plants or produce incomplete cobs. Don’t let your corn dry out when tassels and ears form! - Container Corn:
Corn in pots dries out faster. Check daily, and soak well as plants grow.
Pro Tip:
Sweetcorn is especially sensitive to drought stress during flowering and cob development. If you only water deeply a few times, make it during these stages!
