A lawn will require looking after all year round. Here we provide you with the information on the jobs for your lawn in March from new lawns to existing lawns.

Established lawns

Now is the time to look after your established lawns, you can do this be reseeding any worn areas in the lawn. These areas will need re leveling out and reseeding. Keep aerating the lawn on a regular basis and raking it. This will remove any moss and dead grass. It will also allow the water to enter it. Doing this will let the rain water in and not congregate on the top which will aid disease in the lawn.

Straight lawn edges

If you are wanting straight lawn edges in your garden the best way to do this is tho get a plank of wood and place it where the lawn meets the border of the garden. Get a edging tool and using the plank of wood to guide you slightly cut always at an angle – this will prevent crumbling of the soil

First Mowing of Spring

When the grass is around 3 inches high set your lawn mower to high cut – make sure the weather is dry first. When cutting the grass make sure the lawn mower box is on as leaving any cuttings on the grass will encourage diseases at this time of year.

New Lawns

After the autumn digging of the lawn seed bed it should now be ready for it’s final preparation. The frosts of winter will have helped break down the soil making it easyier to produce a good sowing ground. If you have not had chance to giv the ground a autumn digging you can do it now as long as it is a dry day – rake the lawn seed bed over several times making sure that it’s weed free and to produce a fine tilth and level surface. Once you have done this and its all clear of stones and weeds tread the soil to make it firm and an even surface.

Grass seeds

When selecting your lawn seeds think about the wear and tear of the the grass and how much it will be walked on. You can now sow your seed once it is completely clear of stones and weeds – make sure you sow your seed when the weather becomes to warm up.Finely cover the seed with soil, not deeper than 1/2 an inch. You can cover the soil with clear plastic sheeting to keep warm and protect from the birds eating it.

First Mowing

Don’t do the first mowing until the grass is around 3 inches long. Give it a small light mowing first. This will firm any seeds into the ground.
